Carnival in Alaska - a little less "fun ship" than other destinations?

I'm trying to plan a cruise to Alaska for summer 2010. Cost is an issue for my family (myself, husband, 3 kids 12 and under), but less of an issue for my parents who will be traveling with us. Finding a balance for all of us is tricky.

My parents don't drink (longtime recovered alcoholic). They totally accept that lots of people do, including myself and my husband, but I'd like to avoid a cruise where drinking is either heavily promoted or is a goal for cruisers!

The reviews of Carnival Spirit in Alaska seem great, and it seems like an excellent value. I understand that it's hard to predict where you may encounter obnoxious drunks and that it could happen on any cruiseline, but I'm really trying to be sensitive to my parents in trying to find an overall "feel" that would be a good fit for them.

Any thoughts are appreciated!

i don't think you will have to worry about any line you pick if they are ok with it. you have to remember that on cruises there is alcohol everywhere because the bars and lounges are everywhere. you really don't have to worry too much about the lido deck pools because you are going to alaska and not the caribean so you wont have that pool scene. late late late at night i am sure the drinking scene is worst. i enjoy hanging out at the promenade area outside the casino. one man band music and tables by the windows to see the seas and enjoy the people walking by. All the lounge acts and activities will have drinking. If they are aware of this and ok with it, then don't worry about it. have a great time.
