Casino Poker?

The wife and I are big fans of Texas Holdem, usually in the tournament format. Does the casino offer TH tournaments? If so, what are the usual buy-ins and do they fill quickly.

If no tourneys, is live TH play offered? If so, what are the usual stakes 3-6, 4-8?

I also note that there is a card room on some ships? Is this for the bridge, gin, pinocle crowd. Would the ship frown on a impromptu TH game in there, could you play for money, matchsticks .

This is our first cruise, going to Alaska on the Golden Princess, June 20. Looking forward to it. Thanks for any help.

Just came off two weeks on Sapphire. Sorry I do not play so I can't get too much into details. I can tell you there was a dedicated Hold Em table. They had lots of tournaments and the table was always pretty busy. I think you should be able to find what ever games you are looking for.

I will do my best to answer you. Most ships have the electronic machine which I found to be very good. Up to ten players can play and it is usually a 3 and 6 game. You would buy a card at the cashiers window putting as much money as you want on it. You then insert the card into the machine an it asks you how much of that money you want to play. You cannot add more money in the middle of a hand. You would simply go all in on that hand if you had to. It is a very clever machine.

As far as tournaments, I have seen live tournaments on the Carnival ships but not on the Princess.

Your card room question is a good one. I have seen bulletin boards put up by fellow passengers requesting an impromtu get together for a poker game on an at sea day. I would imagine this works and is not looked down upon by Princess as long as you can use chips which they usually have.

Hope this helps.

The machines they use are PokerPro and they are very realistic. The game is $1-$2 no limit, and there's a $50 minimum buy-in. Some ships have two of these machines, one of which might be allocated to limit. It is very realistic play, the only difference is the cards are electronic and the dealer is the machine.

There are tournaments that will be advertised in the Patter (or ask at the casino), and the buy in depends upon the cruise and the number of players expressing interest in hold em. On the Grand last week they had $30 buy-ins, and it was winner take all (after the rake, of course!). On some ships the tournaments fill very quickly and on others, they end up being cancelled due to lack of interest. And they may actually add tournaments that aren't shown in any of the casino preprinted schedules if there's a big call for it. It just depends upon the crowd.

My husband has played on 3 different Princess ships in the past year, and loves it.

Sapphire had one PokerPro table the last two weeks for 1/2 No Limit, and there were two or three $60-buy-in tourneys.

The gameplay is pretty decent - I described it as "like playing online, but you have to wear pants". The rakes are pretty, um, generous.
