Bases5 Posted June 7, 2009 #1 Share Posted June 7, 2009 Turtle farm question. I know they raise a good portion for release back into the wild. But they must harvest the rest, For what? Food , Shell for medicine, makeup? I'm just curious. doe's anywhere along 7-mile beach serve turtle in different ways. Or someplace else near the tender dock. I like trying new things, foods etc.
drew sailbum Posted June 7, 2009 #2 Share Posted June 7, 2009 The vast majority of the turtles at the Turtle Farm are raised for slaughter. Only a small fraction are released to the wild. Some tourist restaurants will serve turtle but most seems to go to small local restaurants which are not geared to the tourist sector. Common recipes include turtle stew, turtle steak, or turtle burgers. Foreign export of turtle shell or turtle products is governed by the CITES convention. This makes it all but impossible to export any turtle products from Cayman back to the United States or elsewhere.
