What is your point? Obviously, some people feel intimidated by islanders that are in great need of money. Others, feel that this is simply part of the cruise experience. From what I can see, the original poster was not affected either way by the islanders. There IS a DO NOT VISIT post on the govt. board concerning Honduras. I think each person is able to make their own decisions regarding this port, thank you.

Were you having a bad day when you posted?

You're 100% correct that each of us makes their own decisions - which is why my husband and I decided to retire there next year and we're always interested in how others see the place that we love......

My mother went in the water in Cozumel but she would not leave her bag unattended in Roatan due to all the poor people after money.

Your mother left a bag unattended on the beach in Cozumel? I guess the crooks in cozumel have not figured out that the tourists do this type of thing. Thats weird

Weird,

I have always felt more comfortable on Roatan than on my Mexico visits when safety is a concern but I guess its all just a matter of perception. Perhapse if you had visited West Bay, the more popular tourist beach she would have been just as comfy. By no means however am I suggesting it "IS" any safer but as long as the posts are based on perception I figured I would add it in. West Bay would of course be the better beach if comparing apples to apples to your Cozumel trip. What led you to choose West End anyway?

Personally i prefer a much more private beach, close to everything but most visitors never see.

We didn't choose that beach in Roatan. The tour driver just took us there. As you can see in the photo, cars were driving on a road right behind us and it would have only taken seconds for a vehicle to stop and someone to jump out, grab my mom's purse and drive off. It simply had an unsavory feel to it and we didn't want to stay long.

Wow, so yo did not read these forums before your trip and take into account the advice that is available? ANYONE knows that while Roatan has a great deal to offer, if your looking for popular tourist beach then WEST Bay is the place.

Sorry, Not implying anything at all, If you had no choice as to where the tour went and had no idea which beach it took you to and were OK with that then thats great.I am sure this will be helpful for others when deciding which tour to take.

After 25+ cruises we too like more private areas to go to. Where is this beach, do tell your little secret hiding spot here on Roatan. We are always seeking out the unkown.... If you don't want to tell us where this is on line could you email me at deb_dougherty at comcast dot net. We would appreciate any information you can enlighten us with. :D:D

Jay B--we are thinking of using this company for all of our ports on our western caribbean cruise this Jan. We already booked through them for cozumel.

Did you happen to book through them for other ports?

thanks,

barb

Yes - we also used them for an Altun Ha trip in Belize and it was very good. My comments about the tours are included in my review of the Carnival Legend.

I can see you have been sort of harangued by your posting. I think there is some sort of cliche of posters who hammer one individual tour operator over all others. I don't know what to say about this. This posting board is for customers cruising on cruise ships. We are looking for non-prejudiced information on the cruise ports we will be visiting from other cruisers who have been on the same tours.

Please understand that I have never been to Roatan, but am scheduled to come there in February. I want to feel that I am welcome.

Otherwise, with current the current political situation, and with the responses I've seen on many of these Roatan posts, exclaiming, why aren't you going with Victor?, I may just remain on the ship.

Please don't stay on the ship!! It is amazing the different perspectives people have. We had a wonderful private sailing/snorkeling excursion through Mario and Lori http://www.roatantouristinfo.com/activities.htm They can arrange anything you would like to do on Roatan and they really do care that you have a great experience on the island.

Also, after our sail, I wanted to pick up some Honduran coffee. A young man (about 18) overheard me and came over to let me know where I could purchase some. He escorted me to the little grocery store, spoke to the owner, made him open a bag of the coffee for me to smell and see, then told the owner to get me 2 fresh bags and made sure I got charged the correct amount and got the correct change. He then said to me "Thank you so much for visiting our island. We are very glad you are here." And then, he walked me to where Lori was waiting for me in her car and walked away - he NEVER asked me for money for helping me.

I, personally, am looking forward to visiting Roatan again ;)

All five came through and posted perfectly. Actually, they are the very best shots I have seen of Roatan (from a photographer's perspective).

Thank you for posting them.

Why on earth would you allow the postings of a few people determine whether or not you get off the ship? It seems to me that you would only be depriving yourself of forming your own opinion and possibly experiencing a wonderful day.

For those of us who rave about VB, it's because that is what we know. I can't recommend or not recommend other tours because I haven't experienced them. I have read some great reviews of other tour guides though.

To me, the best thing about this board is that it gives me ideas for what I may want to do, and what I may want to avoid. For this particular island, I would not have enjoyed myself if I had just gotten off the ship and wandered around. This may change once Carnival opens it's new port with beach access. So I'm glad I found out about VB tours. I certainly wouldn't tell anyone else though that they shouldn't consider other options.

Thanks for everyone's advice. Don't worry, we won't be staying on the ship! We will be going to West Bay beach with a tour company that I will not name!

I do look forward to this island more than the rest for its beauty and charm.

thank you!
