Is it necessary to reserve a taxi in advance for transfer into Athens? We would like to just hail one when debarking the ship..... any feedback appreciated.

It is possible to simply walk out and taxi are lined up. Do you plan to do sightseeing on your own? Reason I ask is the last 2 years I have done a 1/2 day tour in the am with George Taxi & Tours (georgetaxitours@yahoo.com) - we went to Acropolis first before the crowds; saw the changing of the guard at President's residence so up close and personal; museum; Olympic Stadium; several other monuments or whatever we chose and then we were dropped in the PLAKA for shopping and lunch and easily found our cab back to the ship - what the best part was the driver spoke wonderful English and we had a set price.

Taxi back and forth not always a set price - we also one time did the bus from Constitution Square however too many stops and left us off way away from the ship - very cheap - 1 Euro - but you need lots of time

It is a beautiful city - if you get the chance - go downstairs into the underground - it is fantastic the displays it has

Enjoy -

Nonna: Thanks for the reply. Feel confident now about finding a cab. We are just in Athens for the day so we can get a 6:55 flight out the next day. We were fortunate to be in Athens for 4 days on a land trip several years ago. So have really seen it all; however, it will be a treat to see the Acropolis again and walk the Plaka. Barb

There are a lot of taxis at the port in Piraeus waiting for business, but prices vary depending on the driver (and how honest or dishonest he is). There is a signboard stating what the price of a taxi is for various destinations. I would ask the driver to confirm the price before setting off. You'll find lots of helpful info on this topic in the Med forum.

We found a great taxi when in the line after disembarking the ship last year. He started chatting to us and discovered we came from Melbourne which is the third largest Greek city in the world. He had relatives in our city and when we arrived at our hotel, we were pleasantly surprised with the fare. It think it was around 28Euros.

We bumped into friends later that day and discovered that had paid many euros more for their taxi and the journey was exactly the same as ours. Be careful and ask the price before you decide to hop in. It should be around 30Euros to the middle of Athens.
