We generally bring about $200 in cash and bring most of it back with us. It depends on how much shopping you want to do in the ports and if you want to carry a credit card when off the ship. We will use some of the cash to give additional tips to our waiters and room stewards if they provide special services.

We always take quite a bit just in case we need it for anything but our only cash needs have been tips (extra for staff, room service in case we use it, porters and excursion operators) and a few dollars on shore if you want to buy food or trinkets to take back.

We usually figure in some for bingo although I think it's turned into strictly S&S cards now but the scratchers are still cash. Just fun $$.

Depending on what you do you may need $0 or $20K. Consider your plans for:

1. Additional tips

2. Room service tips

3. Local tours and excursions

4. Local shopping in ports for souvenirs etc

5. Casino

6. Cabs to and from airports and sea ports

7. Porters, shuttle bus driver tips

the casino will take all the cash you are willing to supply, but you can also add that to your S&S card, so be aware. make sure you keep all of your receipts, so you can match them up to your bill the last night, and go to the pursers desk for anything in question...

I usually take $500-$1,000.

Most of my money is spent on pictures. I can't resist!!! I could easily spend $200, especially considering they're about $6-$22 each.

About $100-$140 in the casino, just walking through.

$100 shopping with the locals.

$100-$200 on excursions for 2.

$100 for transportation and tips.

$100 on Bingo

$100 at the ship cafe, gift shop.

I normally put about half my cash on my S&S card, and when it gets low add more. If I run out of cash I use my debit card.

Looks like you plan on putting most things on the S&S card and leaving it on the CC not trying to pay it off before you get off the ship.

I'm not sure when you are going but if you are like me and don't mind using a CC off the ship when you can I would allow about $200 - $250 per person in cash. You will probably bring some home, but you might find something in one of the straw markets that you like, and you may need it for cabs and extra tips.

The casino is what get me. But as for other things, if your excursions are already paid for, you are looking at a little for tip money, and however much you need for shopping.

I'll pick up a few things for people back home, but I know others are huge shoppers. So those are the two main things I take cash for, casino and shopping.

Budget from there.

Be sure to have a supply of dollar bills for tips. I would say 200 in small bills would be plenty. Also a card so you can use an ATM machine. Check your ship as they might cash checks.

When you figure your needs don't forget getting to and from your home port. Parking might be cash only and could add another 100 or so.

I travel solo and I always take $600 in cash (mostly ones, fives, tens and twenties). While I use a credit card for most purchases in Ports . . . I use cash for drinks and lunches and tips in Port. I use cash for cabs from the hotel to the Port (and sometimes cabs from the airport to the hotel if they don't have a free shuttle . . . not to mention the cab from my home to and from the local airport and porters at the airports). I also use cash for tips for the tour guides and tour bus drivers (not to mention a twenty dollar bill for my room steward and head waiter on top of the automatic tips added to one's bill). I usually end up with three or four hundred dollars that I apply to my S&S card at the end of my cruises.

Thus far . . . it's worked pretty good for me. Don't like to use ATM machines while on a cruise and since I don't play Bingo or play in the Casino (though it used to be my passion . . . as a former flight attendanat I used to love to gamble) . . . don't really spend any cash on the cruise ship. :p

I am a new cruiser, first cruise next year. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what do you do with the cash you take on shore excursions when for example your swimming at the beach, if everyone was in the water? I'm sure they have some type of water proof money case or something?.. but do you carry that into the water while your swimming? Thanks.

Bury it in the sand :D

We keep it in our bag which we keep in plain sight.

My TA advised me and others to bring $100 a day. So 7 day cruise = $700. That goes towards your S&S card, as well as to make purchase on and off the ship. My last cruise, my S&S card balance was $390, and 75% of that was on photos. The rest was DOD and a little shopping in the ship's mall.

Hi,

I take $200 in $2.00 bills for tips when in Mexico. "Son de buena suerte" (they are good luck) they tell me when I am in Mexico, whether it is on the Pacific or Gulf coasts.

Luckily, Carnival paid me to cruise in March! My wife and I, both hit for $2,500 each on the slots, so heck yes, we go to the casino! No way do I take $20K! LOL!!!
