Dubrovniktravelady Posted June 19, 2009 #1 Share Posted June 19, 2009 Please check the news article and see how disgusting Crystal cruise line policy is about dumping in our small harbor. They paid the small fine and left our port, expected to return again in a few weeks. This ship line is will be monitored closely in the future. The fine was a mere $12,000, nothing compared to the damage they caused to Sveti Jakov beach. Is this how cruise lines treat foreign water? http://www.croatiantimes.com/index.php?id=4427
iancal Posted June 19, 2009 #2 Share Posted June 19, 2009 It is unfortunate that the fine could not have been in the 100's of thousands. The only way to make certain that the cruise lines are following regs is to hit them where it hurts...in the bottom line. Alaska and the Pacific coast of Canada have had similar issue with cruise ships in the past. Now they are watched very closely by the coast guards from both countries. I am so sorry to hear about this crime against the environment. It is a real pity Crystal got away paying such a pittance. I'm sure even if clean up is possible it will take the beach a long time to recover. My daughter worked for a non-profit called Coast Keepers in San Diego. They monitor the beaches down there, and organize fund raisers and clean-ups. Those that work to keep our coastal waters clean hate cruise ships for lots of environmental reasons. She was conflicted....she loves cruising.
