Tipping for Children?

Recommended Posts

Yes, full amount. You may be inclined to up the amount when you see how they treat the kids.

absolutely! On our last cruise we traveled with 3 other families and we had our "kids table" next to ours in the dining room; 9 teenagers. The waiters doted on them, bringing them extra plates of Savory Bites at the beginning of each meal, and cookies and milk for them at the end of dinner. It was a great cruise and the wait staff really added to the experience.

Kids are people too and the parents should tip the full amount for them. I couldn't imagine not doing so.

Back in my early cruising days I was divorced and had a young son and always tipped in full for him. My friend who traveled with us also did the same for her son. It's part of the cruise fare as far as I am concerned.

Interesting - Family of 5, 3 kids, that's one expensive holiday.

Welcome to my life, lol! I've got 3 kids, we book 2 connecting rooms, and the room steward always earns his tips in their rooms, no matter how hard they try, it always requires a little bit more picking up than mine does. :D They've had a towel animal on each of there beds on some cruises, and had their stuffed animals and jammies aranged "artfully" We've tipped above and beyond sometimes, just because our steward was so attentive to the kids...and we've been cruising with them since the oldest was 2.

As for the dining room, if we thought the room steward went above and beyond, the dining staff usually topped that. It only took a day or two for them to figure out my kids, and sometimes what we wanted didn't need to be asked for, it was already waiting for them. Disposable toddler utensils were washed and waiting for her the next night, and once my bossy youngest realized these guys would bring her anything she demanded (with a laugh and a smile!) she was totally hooked on cruising, and she was 3 at the time.

These are some examples, I haven't read far enough yet to see more, but I just wanted to share my experiences. Many staff members have left behind little ones of their own, and I think they spoil mine because they miss theirs so much...I've been told this time and again by them personally. Yes, the young cruisers don't take up much space on a large ship, but I feel the staff works harder for them sometimes, and we tip accordingly.

Ditto on what she said!!! When I've helped a new cruiser book their vacation (I'm not a TA, but like to help ;) ) I usually have them pre-pay the tips ( but explain fully what they are) to help them budget a bit...this helps my friends realize they really can afford to cruise! Personally I don't pre-pay, but it is part of our planned expenses, I'll separate it from our spending $$, and usually add more as we make our last night envelopes.

I felt compelled to chime in here. On our last cruise, my son became very ill. Without providing all the details, let's just say our cabin attendant went way above and beyond the call of duty. She was incredibly thoughtful and caring and her responsiblities were much greater than normal. I hope to never need this level of service again but I will tip at or above the recommended level knowing that it is available should that need arise. Even my children each chipped in for the additional tip...a first for us!

We do as others recommend and consider the tips a part of the cruise fare.
