knorrisb07 Posted August 7, 2010 #77 Share Posted August 7, 2010 try to get rental car whenever possible. I found the car rental in Alaska is more expensive (more than 2x) of regular rate of lower 48 states. But it is cheap comparing to the cost of ship excursions. overthesea Posted August 8, 2010 #79 Share Posted August 8, 2010 As others have noted, renting a car in Skagway is an excellent excursion and saves money versus ship's excursions. Go as far as Emerald Lake if you have time remembering you will go into Canada and will need passport. With the exception of the float plane trip to Misty Fjord this has been my favorite excursion and will be doing it again this August. Fifth trip to Alaska and have done many excursions but bang for the bucks the trip up the Yukon Hwy can not be beat IMO.
Sally Forth Posted August 9, 2010 #80 Share Posted August 9, 2010 I don't know how many are in your group, but we're renting a car in Juneau for the 4 of us for the day. It's between $60-$70 but that's sure cheaper than paying for an excursion that lasts 3 hours and costs as much as the rental car per person! We walked everywhere in Juneau. The city is very small and it was an easy uphill walk (and even easier coming down) to the governor's mansion and the museum. Viv

Hotrocks Posted August 10, 2010 #82 Share Posted August 10, 2010 We were in the same situation and found renting a car in both Juneau and Skagway was the best way to go. Going at our own pace and having the freedom to go where we wanted was just the best way to go. Take some snacks with you from the ship and your own water bottles and your cost will be pretty low. Also, the Great Alaskan Toursaver book will give you buy one get one free on any tours you do want to go on. We got one used and used one to go kayaking and the book paid for itself.
