We are arriving at Arlanda at 3pm on Saturday 27 July. We are staying overnight at Elite Eden Park Hotel. What is the best way to get there from the airport.

 

On Sunday 28 July we leave on Vision of the Seas. Best way to get to the the ship? Any other suggestions for the short time we have in Stockholm - things to do, where to eat.

Based on the Stockholm cruise port website found in this forum, my cruise ship is docking at Stadsgarden on Jun 28. But someone from my roll call contacted NCL and

they were told that we're docking at Frihamnen. Does anyone know from experience which one is correct?

 

I am not sure but I would guess that the official port website would be the correct one.

It depends on your budget.

Fastest and most convenient is either cab or Arlanda Express (train). Both option will cost you about the same amount of money.

 

A cab is around 400SEK (£40) from Arlanda to central Stockholm.

The train is 380SEK (£38) for persons going one way during Thursday-Sundays.

 

Other options are airport coaches (Flygbussarna) which is 99SEK per person one way.

 

Both airport coaches and Arlanda Express will get you to the central station, the hotel is 1,5km away from the station.

2. Best way to get to ship is either taxi or bus.

Blue Bus stops just 50m from your hotel and stops maybe 100m from the cruise terminal. It leaves every 15min.

With so little time, go to Gamla Stan, walk around the narrow streets then perhaps make a reservation for a table at Den Gyldene Freden.

This restaurant is almost 400 years old, it was founded in 1721.

Then why not a stop at Kungsträdgården for something to drink while walking back to the hotel?

The most convenient and comfortable way to get from Arlanda to your hotel is either a taxi or Arlanda Express train. A normal size taxi will be 520 kronor, not 400.

 

The train costs 260 kronor per person, if you are above age 65 the cost is 190 kronor. Children age 0 to 17 years are free. There has been a special price for two people which is 380 kronor but that will not be available after June 16. Other discounts for Arlanda Express happen now and then. Obviously you will have to add the cost for a taxi from the central station to your hotel.

 

Personally I always take the Arlanda Express because it is the fastest and most comfortable way. But also because I travel alone and I am an old woman, so it is definitely less expensive.

 

The best way to get to the ship is definitely a taxi, at least when you have luggage. Ordinary buses in Stockholm are not really designed for heavy luggage.

 

It will be evening before you will be ready to go out and you will probably be rather tired. There are many restaurants in the area around your hotel and you could take a walk down to Stureplan and Biblioteksgatan which is the fashionable shopping and evening district. In the morning you could ask the hotel to store your luggage and go to the Vasa museum which is considered the main sight . I don't know when you have to board the ship but if there is time you should definitely go to Gamla Stan to spend some time there.

Regarding Arlanda Express, I just noticed that they have special prices during the summer.

Two for 280SEK, three for 380SEK and four for 480SEK, price is valid from 17/6 to 1/9.

 

Also I would advice against Stureplan, too much of a "brat area", the area where all the spoiled "kids" hang out. ;)

There are mostly nightclubs there with probable long queues and etc.

 

I still would still choose Gamla Stan over Stureplan especially since the ship leaves at 10.00 the next day.

If there are 3 adults with bag each is a taxi the easiest way to Frihamnen ( price is not really a huge issue unless a bus is almost as fast and a 1/3 price)

I would think you would want to stay somewhere close to Gamla Stan or any of the Central Stockholm sights instead of staying near the Airport. That way you can get some of the Stockholm ambiance before you retire at your hotel. Depending on what transportation you take from the airport, it will take 1/2 hr (Arlanda Express or taxi) to 1 hr (Flugbusse). If you wait to do that Sunday morning, you may find yourself only having time to get to the ship. And you can't leave your suitcases at the ship if you are not ready to get onboard.

 

If hotel prices have you in sticker shock, there are some nice hostels on GAMLA Stan, some with private bathrooms. Hostels are not just for students. That way you can enjoy the city on your doorstep.

 

We originally considered staying near the airport or near Frihamnen (Scandic Ariadne is close to Frihamnen and affordable). We ultimately decided on a Hostel in Gala Stan for the 2 of us for the "budget" price of $130/night. I figure the most important sights would be on our doorstep so we can enjoy it more for the limited time we are there.

 

Sunday morning, we plan on leaving our luggage at the hostel and go to Vasa when it opens. Then after our last minute sightseeing at Vasa and Djurgarden, we will retrieve our luggage on Gamla Stan and take Bus 76 to our ship.

For all cruise ships that want to reach Stockholm city have to go through the archipelago.

 

It is possible that the ships will use a different route for the outer most part of the cruise through archipelago.

Some of the bigger ships have to go through Furusundsleden while the other ships can go through Sandhamnsleden.

Both routes are very scenic and won't make a difference from the scenic point of view.

 

However previously some ships have docked in Nynäshamn which is about 50km south of Stockholm.

Any ship that docks in Nynäshamn will miss out on the scenic journey through the archipelago.

 

So you will need to check if both ships dock in central Stockholm.

I am thinking of purchasing the HOHO boat tickets online to save time and get payment out of the way. I have read on the thread here the hoho boats have a direct route from the ships to the Vasa. However, I don't remember if there is any discussion about the timing of these early boats. If we get off the ship about 9:30 (would be nice if we can get off earlier..).... will the early hoho boats be in session for that direct Vasa route? or is there a certain time when the early direct boat ends and the regular hoho schedule goes.

I'm thinking I've read that if we get on the regular schedule...from the pier to Vasa will take quite a bit of time.

Would appreciate any clarification or insight before I purchase the tickets.

We've just came off the Emerald Princess this past Monday and I have to say this is a great port to visit. Although we did walk from the ship to Gamla Stan (Takes 40 minutes) then to the Royal Palace (in 10 minutes) from here we walked to City Hall (40 minutes) then walked to the Vasa Museum (way too far took us 1 hour and 5 minutes), after visiting the Vasa, walked back to the Royal Palace to see the changing of the guard at 12 PM (took 35 minutes) then walked back to the ship (another 40 minutes).

 

We choose to walk because we did see a lot and the HOHO runs every 20 minutes. You can get on the HOHO from the ship directly to the Vasa.

 

Wish we have more time instead of just 6.5 hrs in this great city.

 

You can also walk toward the direction of the Diplomat hotel from the ship and they have daily bike rental there for like 10 to 12 bucks a day. Wish we had walked there earlier and use the bike rental. The rental bike is on the water side so you don't have to cross the road. You can see the Vasa museum as you are walking and it looks very close but it's very far to walk there.

 

I am 5'8 and 145 lbs and my feet are killing me for after walking 6 hours. We did soak in the hot tub after all day walking.

Going through the archipelago is amazing and super slow so close to people's house. it lasted 4 hrs as the ship left Stockholm and it'd be great if you u have a balcony.

You had me worried. from what i could find, Vasa closed in April but reopened on May 1. I think they were not sure when they would be able to reopen it, and said it could be as late as August.

From September 1st to May 31st 2014, open 10-17 except Wednesdays that have extended opening times to 20.00.
