Lisa & Neb, it's actually a pretty simple bet. First, the terminology:

"neveS" (pronounced nevis, not neeves, BTW) or "Doctor" equals Seven. We all know it's bad luck to say that word anywhere near a dice table. I'm an ex dice dealer and boxman. We were trained that the only time that word ever gets said is during the actual call of the game (7-out or 7-winner). When booking an "Any 7" it's generally called "The Doctor".

"juice" equals commission. Since the lay bet pays true odds (It's the Darkside equivalent of a Buy bet), the house charges a 5% commission. This time, instead of paying 5% on your bet, you get charged 5% on the eventual payoff.

The bet in simple terms is this:

Lay the 4 for $40 + $1 juice

Lay the 10 for $40 + $1 juice

Lay the 5 for $30 + $1 juice

Lay the 9 for $30 + $1 juice

Lay the 6 for $24 + $1 juice

Lay the 8 for $24 + $1 juice

You're actually laying each number to make $20.

Think of it this way, on a place or buy bet, you win one bet at a time and lose them all with a 7. With the lay bet, you lose one bet at a time as each number is rolled, but when the Doctor comes knocking, you win all your Lays at once. Remember too, that the 7 is the number most commonly rolled.

The action so far is $194. That leaves $6 change from your two black checks. That leaves the two way toke bet. Normally a two way is for the dealers and yourself. In this case, you're making a bet for the dealers and the shooter. A two way Doctor, 3 for the crew and 3 for the shooter. Everybody wants the 7 to roll. When it does, everybody wins.

This bet can be called many things.

If you're lucky enough to have a British crew (or at least a British box), then ask for "No numbers for $194". In Vegas, it's generally "Lay the line for $188", (In Vegas, they usually take the juice out of your winnings as opposed to out of your initial bet.) If you have an inexperienced crew, it's "I'd like to lay all the numbers to make $20 each". After they finish counting on fingers and toes, they'll toss you the change from your $200. Make sure that the dealer or the box verbally books the bet and make sure they're "Working" on the come-out. This should be automatic, but I've been burned that way too.

Have fun and good luck.

p.s. I see you're from London. Come on over to the Falls and we'll help you practice!!

The best way to learn craps is online in my opinon. Do a google search on the game and you will find lots of help.

I do disagree about learning on the ship though. They do give a class which is helpful to beginners. It is BASIC craps and will get you started on the easiest bets to make.

Lots of folks are tossing ideas in this thread which does make it hard for a beginner to follow. I advise is to read online about craps and then come back here with any questions. We can teach you. No problem.

Don't worry, I know the basics of craps and some of the people on this board confuse me as well :) They have some interesting ideas though.

The good news is for christmas Yo Eleven is going to give me $1000 for me to play his dark side strategy on my Jan cruise :) Thanks Yo

We'd call that the vig here, a surcharge for taking the action. Juice = interest that runs while Guido is chasing you around town trying to collect. :)

Critter, would you replace your bet on the points as they're made/hit and you lose, to keep the board full? Or do you just let them dwindle down until the shooter sevens out?

Jester,

Vig or vigorish works too. So far, I can run faster scared than Guido can mad;)!

As far as replacing the points, I never do. I only use this bet with a hot shooter. As I said, that way I can have it both ways, play the dark side and go with a hot shooter.

As soon as a shooter makes a point, I take everything down and start betting DC's laying full odds.

Once the shooter 7s out, I'm back on the Don't Pass laying full odds with maybe a couple of DCs.

I never take the dice.

Any dack side players over ONLY play the 4/10 (laying or DP)? or maybe include the 5/9? I just find the 6/8 to be to easy..... so when i have played dark I ake down my bet when the 6/8 are the point on a DC/DP. I know i am tossing away the advantage.... but when you play max odds I figure playing safe with the harder numbers will extend my play!!!

To lay the 4 or 10 only may seem to be a better bet, but when you take everything into account, you realize that it just aint so. It's true, that you'll lose the bet less often, but when you do lose, you'll lose more. It all comes out in the wash. Every lay bet has the same PC. I can almost see not laying odds, or at least not full odds, on a 6/8, but that's gut feeling, not math. The truth is, anytime you lay odds on a DC or DP, you're diluting your advantage. That doesn't mean it's a bad thing to do, you'll always still be playing ahead of the house.

As far as DP/DC goes, PT Barnum said it best...Never give a sucker an even bet.

Once you have a DC or DP bet established, this is the ONLY time (at least as far as I can think of), where you actually have a quantifiable advantage over the house. If you take a DP or DC down, the house looks at you like a skinny guy at a buffet...step right up sir!

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO Lisa&Neb: A cruise ship is just as good as any other place to learn to play a game. They will learn the rules. It took me many years to get to the point where I play the way I do now.

The player must learn the rules of the game. A ship is as good a place as any to learn these. Then later on a player could go to Las Vegas to learn to play. Las Vegas is the best place to learn because of lower minimum betting in many casinos.

The only reason I said a ship is not the best place to learn is because I ahve found that the dealers adn not as strong. They take longer to pay, they do not have all the numbers in their head. They do not know all the bets. I Just have never had a deal on a ship as good as my Ceasers Windsor dealers/box. as for an empty table and just placing bets and and cheap tables... yes a ship is good if you have someone who can show you. Ceasers Windsor is almost always $10 mins....

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO Lisa&Neb: Dealers on a ship don't know all the bets on a cruise ship. However, dealers in Casinos not on a ship sometimes mess up too.

Cesar's Windsor having $10 minimum bets is similar to playing in Atlantic City which has high minimum bets also. In Las Vegas you have a $1 or $2 minimum table in almost any game 24 hours a day. You may also have higher minimum tables too. Or you may just have one table and everyone, low roller and high roller, plays at the table.

However, you must keep your eyes on the dealers at all times. They may not intentially try to cheat you, but, it can happen. Always know your payouts for your typical bets that you make. Always know your payout for every bet you make.

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO LSTEFFA: There you go again. I am not kidding. I lived and played in Las Vegas for more than a year. Also, in Las Vegas they recognize that some people are visiting a gambling city for the first time or at least on an irregular trip. I have also played at some of those tables especially when I was first learning how to play the different casino games.

Casino Player....Other than Casino Royale ($3/mininum-100X odds-best crap game in Las Vegas or anywhere else) and maybe O'Sheas please tell me where you can find "a $1/$2" crap game on the strip. Like I said they might exist downtown @ El Cortez/PLaza/California etc but not on the strip. Please read nextshooter.com which verifies min/max bets for individual casinos.

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO LSteffa: I have never played in Casino Royale. I have played at O'Sheas, Holiday Inn which was where Harrah's is now. The Dunes The Belliago is now at that spot, The Frontier, Circus Circus, The Stardust, The Desset Inn, The Imperial Palace and The Sands all had tables with $1-$2 games at all times. In a tourist town you must play to the lowest common denominator. Tourists many of who may never played the game before. Many Casinos on Las Vegas Blvd even gave complimentary gaming lessons.

The Plaza never had a $1 game. At least not when I was there. I never liked playing in El Cortez or The Las Vegas Club which was also owned by Jackie Gaughan who owned several hotels including the one I worked in at one time.

I don't have to read nextshooter.com.

Here's one for starters.

Stay away from Big 6 and Big 8 and avoid the stupid bets in the center of the table. That is my method and strategy. Saw this clowns parlay hard 6 and hard 10 several times. Yeah they won it a couple of times but big deal. They spent 800 dollars to win 500. Great investment. LOL!

LOL That's my dad you're talking about! That man will parlay a number 5-6 times... somehow he won about $5,000 on the cruise...

I played craps for the first time in 4-5 years on that cruise...

I bet big on the pass line and cover numbers in the beginning... I'll parlay once and then start getting paid.

I'm not good at craps only play it as a pasttime with my father... the main key is to know how and when to pull all your bets down...

Casino Player...The places you refer to ie Sands, Dunes are in the distant past. There are CURRENTLY NO STRIP casinos offering as you put it "$1/$2 games 24 hours a day". BTW did you know Buggsy Siegel ??? Sounds like your generation..the distant past..LOL

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO LSTEFFA: You really show your intelligence here or more aptly put the lack of it. The Sands/Dunes were not the distant past. And when the newer places were being built I was living in Las Vegas. The Sands is replaced by the Ventian which has the same ownership. Different concept new hotel. Many of the older Hotels in Las Vegas are really classy places. I bet you don't go to the Sahara Hotel because Frank and the Rat Pack performed there?

Casino Player....You are missing the point....someone asked about the RECENT betting minimums at strip casinos. I simply stated the fact that except at Casino Royale & O'Sheas the are no as you put it "$1 & $2 dollar games 24 hours a day" You don't have to get your panties in a wad old timer.

I learned to play on a Celebrity cruise about 15 yrs ago, late at night with only 2 people at the table. I was watching and a nice woman encouraged me to get in and learn. Fell in love with the game! Maybe because I won 400 in an hour. My method is to look for a busy ,somewhat noisy table and bet pass and odds, and then one or two numbers. If I have a pretty high come bet out, I will put $1 or $2 on an "any craps". I will double my numbers bet after the 2nd payout, and keep pressing until the roll goes on for a while, then take all but the basic bet down.

My opinion is that the table has a life. It will rise when getting hot, then start ebbing. The trick is to be able to "feel" the beginning of the end of it's life.
