Barbados shops closed on Sunday?

On our cruise in November we'll be in Barbados on a Sunday.

Is it like many other islands where everything is closed?

During cruise ship season,

and if there are 3 - 5 ships in that day

you'll find most shops open on Sundays to catch the cruiser dollar. ;)

Make sure you book an excursion ahead of time or everything is closed.

Does that mean we should book a beach excursion through the ship, or will there still be taxis available to take us to beaches??

Sunday Dec 5th - so I guess that's 'in season', but there are only 3 ships I can find scheduled that day - us (Ruby 3000 pax) and 2 other small ships that only total about 1500 pax together, so could be a toss-up.

I was there on a Sunday in February and there were some shops open for shopping but it was pretty dead. In the terminal the only real shops open were jewelry stores. Unfortunately the excursions on ship booked quickly and we just got off to see land and come back on. Barbados is a beautiful island and perhaps the Barbadian poster before can tell me where the beach I have been in search of is. I took the Jolly Roger excursion a few years ago and it anchored off a beach and shuttled us in. The sand was almost a light pink and was like satin. The water so clear you could be in up to your neck and still see your feet. Every year I try to find that beach since the Jolly Roger isn't operational anymore (I heard they were redoing it) and each time they try to shuttle me to Monkey beach and I find that to be the bigger tourist trap going.

December is definitely "in season"..its also during the Christmas period so shops will definitely be open every Sunday in December.

Outside of this period it would depend how many ships are in port for the stores to open.

Coming up to Christmas?

After an economically desperate year?

I reckon the shops will be open!!

And anyone worried about taxi availability?

Same factors apply. ;)

We need da money!! :)

They took you to pretty much any average West Coast beach

on a day the North swell wasn't running, and hadn't run for awhile

i.e. calm, crystal-clear water.

Happens all the time.

Pick a beach - any beach.. ;)

Coulda bin Sandy Lane, Paynes Bay, Reid's Bay...the list goes on. :)

What a beautiful beach! What are the amenities -- i.e. chairs, umbrellas, food, clean washrooms? And what is the cost to get there?

What are the amenities -

No amenities at this beach, sorry.

It's not a tourist beach, which maybe is why it looks the way it does?

Mainly it's private homes along this stretch

thus the solo beach chair in the shot below

Same bay but on a less-clear day.

Janette...Please note that even though they are private homes on the beach. It is not a "private beach". There is no such animal in Barbados.

So you are more than welcome to go to the beach and as you can see there is natural shade provide by trees so you have a spot to "cool out"

Thanks Keith but I really need to be somewhere where there's chairs, refreshment and washrooms!
