post cruise hotel in Amsterdam

We're trying a river cruise on the new Avalon Waterways ship "Felicity" in July 2010 (Romantic Rhine). Which hotel in Amsterdam is recommended- Marriott or Renaissance? The cruise offers a CANAL BOAT tour on day 8, and then we disembark the next morning. We plan to spend 2 additional nights in Amsterdam. Any suggestions from cruisers who have either done this cruise or have visited Amsterdam?

We stayed at the Renaissance and liked the location as it is near the train station and close to other attractions. Rooms were nice ... and lots of good restaurants on the next street ...

Great! We are defintely doing an extra day or 2 before and probably one after but have not finalized those plans yet. We are excited. Have you been able to view one of Avalon's webinars? It was very informative.

I signed up for an Avalon webinar and then forgot about it. They e-mailed me a taped version a few days later and I watched it. This is our first river cruise and we hope to enjoy all it has to offer. We are not expecting the hoopla of a large ocean liner. Very excited, even though it is almost a year away. Can't wait to retire so we can travel in a season other than summer!

We stayed at the Citizen M at the airport. Ultra modern and techy hotel. Paid $100/night and rode the train located at the airport (5-10 min. walk from hotel under covered walkway) into Amsterdam. There is a new Citizen M in Amsterdam. www.citizenm.com

We were going to stay at the Fita, a smaller hotel in the museum district, however that would have entailed a taxi ride to the hotel and to the airport. We changed to the Park Plaza Victoria. It was a very nice hotel and we walked there from where the ship docked. It was very clean and quiet, but we asked for a quiet room and so were facing the courtyard. It is right next to the train station, and so we walked to the train station and took the train to the airport (only costs 4 euros versus 50 for a taxi). I thought I would love Amsterdam, but it was my least favorite city (although we did enjoy the canal tour, Hermitage, and Van Gogh museum).

I stayed at the Marriott this past May and it was great. Location is very convenient. It is in the Leidesplein which is a popular area for nightclubs and restaurants. It's also just a block or two from the Rijksmuseum. There's a canal boat stop directly across the street and there are multiple public transport lines crossing in front of the hotel.

Rooms were good-sized and the beds were extremely comfortable. I would definitely recommend.

I would also agree with the above poster. We have stayed 3 times at the Marriott Hotel in Amsterdam and found it to be a perfect location for sightseeing and lots of choices for rests. Also, the Marriott in Brussels is in a wonderful location within walking distance to the Grand Plaza ( 3 min. walk) and to Butcher Street ( around the corner from the Grand Plaza), which consists of about 4 streets with rests on both sides. Menus are posted and each side of the street has ethnic specialities--Italian, Greek, lebanese, chinese etc. etc. Wonderful location also for public transportation. Great beds and super service.

Enjoy

next trip?

We were on a cruise last month and spent four days in Amsterdam. We stayed at the Moevenpick which is right where the cruise ship docks and just a short walk from where the river boats dock. It is a very modern hotel and we found it very comfortable. There is a tram (Number 25) which is just a short walk from the hotel which takes you directly to central station and from there you can transfer to any of the other trams.

We thought about booking that hotel, too, as it was near the piers ... however, when is was time to get on the ship, we found that it was docked about a mile from there ... our ship last year did board near the Moevenpick, but not this year.

It has been 5 years since our Uniworld cruise from the Black Sea to Amsterdam. Can't believe that much time has passed. We stayed in A for 5 nites after the cruise at the Renaissance. It is part of the Marriott chain--a lovely hotel within walking distance of the Central Station. We did take a cab from the ship and then a shuttle to the airport. Our room was quite large, the bathroom was very large. We never ate in the hotel. We brought sweet rolls in for breakfast. Room had wonderful electric kettle with a good selection of coffee and tea. There is a coffee shop attached to the hotel--one of the oldest in A. with very good food. Also a street with varied ethnic restaurants just across to the left of the hotel. We ate most of our meals there. It is a great city. Just watch out for the bikes. Pat

We've booked CitizenM at the airport for a pre-cruise stay. There is also one in downtown Amsterdam. It will definitely be a unique experience. Highly rated on TripAdvisor, it's a very small room, budget luxury hotel. The rates per night are between $117 and $150. The cruise line wanted $306 PP ($612 per night) for them to book a room for us.

Are you sure you want to stay around the airport? You need transportation(train) to get into the city and back. I would adivse you to get a room in Amsterdam. Apart from the hotel you mention check hotels like Ibis, Brouwer, Bellevue etc. Not that expensive but more to do and see during the night.

Just returned from AMS less than a month ago...stayed at the Marriott...absolutely GREAT!

Location is wonderful (Ledesplein) and very easily accessible for all the things of interest (restaurants, museums (Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum), parks, restaurants...everything!) with easy access to all forms of transportation...if we every return to AMS it will be to stay here again!

Hotel staff was GREAT as well.

We just spent 5 days at the Hilton. It was great. Very quiet area but only a few minute by tram to anywhere in town. Staff was absolutely superb. In Paris, we liked the Hotel Residence Foch. Highly rated, deservidly so, by Tripadvisor.
