We are going Rio->Valparaiso via Antarctica and have to take clothes for everything from 90 degree weather down to 20 degrees.

We did that cruise last Christmas on the Amsterdam (you'll love it!), and if I recall well there were six in total. Plus Christmas Eve and New Year's Day were optional formal.

On our 21 day repositioning cruise -- not South America -- we had 5 formal nights.

So -- you should count on 5 - 6 formal nights.
