Tipping on Princess Cruises

The captain does not need tipping. We always leave the autotips on our credit card and always give the room steward and his assistant $25.00 more and also more to our waiter and his assistant. They work so hard and make so little. I know this has been discussed extensively on other posts. :D:D:D

I understand that if you do not do the autotipping and just decide to tip your steward, waiter/waitress, etc individually that they have to put that money into a "pool" and split it with all the other workers.

However, if you elect to do the auto tipping and decided to give an extra tip to whoever for their excellent service, do they get to keep that extra money, or do they have to put it in the "pool"?

On our first 2 cruises we kept the auto tipping. On our first cruise we tipped our waitress (tranditional dinning) extra on the last night. She was AWESOME! On our 2nd cruise the cabin steward was AWESOME, so we gave her extra money on the last day. Did they get to keep it?

From the 2009 Answer Book (about auto-tipping):

"........This charge will be shared amongst those staff who help provide and support your cruise experience, including the wait staff, stateroom stewards, buffet stewards, galley staff, laundry staff and others. Casino dealers and Lotus Spa personnel do not share in the Hotel and Dining charge as not all passengers utilize these services."

This would indicate no additional tip is necessary at any of the restaurants, room service, or steward. Those who feel the need can certainly give more, but no one should feel obligated or guilty if they do not do more than the auto-tip to these specified staff.
