tjljsc Posted August 30, 2009 #1 Share Posted August 30, 2009 We are definitely doing the train from Rome to the port and a round trip Livorno/Florence. Should we buy our tickets online before we leave or should we wait and purchase at the station? I like being prepared, but am also concerned about missing a pre-selected train time. Thoughts? Rare cruisemom42 Posted August 30, 2009 #2 Share Posted August 30, 2009 You don't need to purchase your tickets in advance, and I wouldn't advise doing it just for the reason you mention -- the timing. Just in base something changes along the way, you are better off purchasing these kinds of tickets as you go.

As Cynthia said, you do not want to purchase tickets ahead of time. The train trip that you are talking about are primarily served by regionale trains, and mostly 2cl (ie - no reserved seats). 2cl regionale train tickets are useable on any regionale trains on a particular route, on any day, up until 60 days frm the date of purchase. If you are flying into FCO and taking the Leonardo Express into Rome, then buy all your train tickets at the FCO train station.
moyaroo Posted August 30, 2009 #4 Share Posted August 30, 2009 For Civitavecchia to Rome and return BIRG ticket for regional train to Rome allows for metro and bus in Rome. Just ask for B.I.R.G. (Ticket Interegional(?) Rome Daily)
euro cruiser Posted August 30, 2009 #5 Share Posted August 30, 2009 If you plan to use mass transit while in Rome (buses, metro, trams), instead of a regional train ticket, buy a 24 hour 5-zone BIRG ticket. This is a regional ticket, good only in the province of Lazio (which includes both Civitavecchia and Rome). It costs 9 Euro and covers your round trip train fare (Civitavecchia to Rome and back) as well as all mass transit in Rome. Be sure to stamp it before you board the train in the morning (this is true for all regional train tickets) and you're good to go for the rest of the day. GSPLover Posted August 30, 2009 #6 Share Posted August 30, 2009 Added note: The BIRG does not cover transportation to/from FCO to/from Rome.
euro cruiser Posted August 30, 2009 #7 Share Posted August 30, 2009 Added note: The BIRG does not cover transportation to/from FCO to/from Rome. Good point. It also doesn't cover direct, non-stop trains back and forth from Civitavecchia to Rome Termini. The BIRG ticket is only good for the regional trains. tjljsc Posted August 31, 2009 Author #8 Share Posted August 31, 2009 Okay, so for this BIRG ticket... will it cover all of these? 1. FCO to Rome Termini 2. Rome Termini to Port 3. Metro w/in Rome 4. Buses w/in Rome Also... if we validate on Saturday evening, is it a true 24 hr ticket so we can use it on Sunda morning as well?

Everything else you have listed, yes, as long as you take the REGIONAL train from Termini to the port of Civitivecchia.

The Trenitalia website does not allow online ticket purchase if you are using a US CC.
