  1. Yes, it's a deal breaker for my family. It's not really because of my kids (youngest is 7), but because of me.

I'm an insulin-dependent diabetic. I'm in the minority of diabetics, because the majority control their blood sugar through diet and exercise and medications other than insulin. Those of us who take insulin have to be fairly vigilant at making sure our blood sugar stays within the normal range. I've been doing this for more than 30 years, so I've gotten pretty good at it. However, there are times (e.g. when a schedule changes and I'm more active than I normally might be at home), where I might miss the mark on the amount of insulin I need to take. At those times, I can become hypoglyemic, and that can become a medical emergency very quickly if I don't eat something soon.

WHAT?? I am a type I diabetic and would NEVER depend on snacks/food from the cruise line or a hotel for a hypoglycemic episode. Why are you not carrying glucotabs, smarties.fast acting gluco-gel......and glucagon? This is irresponsible on YOUR part.

When I travel, I always bring snacks to have in my hotel room with me. Last year, we took our very first cruise on the Dawn, and we loved it. In addition to the fun of the cruise, one of the side benefits was that I didn't have to pack a ton of snacks. This might seem trivial, but trust me, it isn't. You always need to have a snack with you, just in case, or have ready access to food.

Yes, I understand I'm on a cruise ship and there is food round the clock. However, if I awake at 3 AM and I'm hypoglycemic, I'm not going to want to leave my cabin and find my way to wherever the food is, simply because Norwegian has decided I can't take my snacks back to the cabin with me. During a hypoglycemic episode, a person is not usually thinking as clearly as normal and to me, this possible situation is a needless hassle and potential risk. The easier solution for me and my family is to find another cruise line which allows me the convenience I need, because quite frankly, if I am paying to cruise where there is abundant food, I shouldn't still have to tote my own snacks with me.

OH MY GOD!! I am a type i diabetic since childhood ( 43 years, thank you. YOU are responsible to carry your own fast-acting carbs. I would NEVER EVER leave my LIFE in the hands of a cruise line, restaurant, hotel! YOu know that you must carry glucotabs, gluco gel- even smarties! How about your glucagon kit?? While you may despise the changes that NCL has made, it is complete BS to contend that they, not you, are responsible for your health. EVERY type I diabetic knows to carry fast acting carbs with them-portable, non-perishible, life -saving snacks. The hystrionics are simply silly. YOu can have all the carbs you need in a bag smaller than your fist. You dont need to be toting around roast beef sandwiches. SMH

AND- Type 2 diabetics dont usually use insulin. By definition, an insulin dependent diabetic is...wait for it--DEPENDENT on INSULIN!!

  2. We fly out tomorrow. I don't want to go buy a case of soda and water at Walgreeens or whatever and then have them keep it? Has anyone did this recently at Port of Miami?

We got some water at Publix after flying in. The porters would not take it with a tag, but I had some of the cloth Publix re-usable shopping bags with me. I pulled those out, put 12 pack of the water in each , tied the handles together , slapped on a luggage and they took THAT! I don't know what the big difference is.

The past twotrips out of Miami have been met with the grouchiest psuedo-stevadores ever!

  3. This thread sure got off topic quickly!!

Back to the subject- there are plenty of threads about the service charges and takeaway issues.

    We choose NCL now because

    There is no

Haven-like substitute on RCL,DCL . While the kids and I wouldnt care if we were in the Haven or not, DH has had skin cancer and loves to lounge in the big clam shells, enjoys the courtyard area and the lounge. We do love the Haven restaurant as well. The size of the 2BR suite is great for our family.

On DCL our favorite 2BR suite costs 10K more ( this you read correctly)

Royal's prices for a similar suite is slightly more for us than NCL. On the newer RCL ships a comparable suit is 4-5 grand more. They do have a concierge lounge and the cocktails flow freely for several hours each evening, but that doesn't outweigh the benefits of having the separate area to relax. THe CC on some ships on Royal has no view! On Freedom it was tucked behind some elevators and kinda dreary!

We DISLIKE the lack of amazing itineraries ( which is changing) at times when we can travel. Wish they would dump Nassau .

We hadn't been on NCL for about 4 years before we tried Getaway. Have been on her twice with another coming soon, and on Breakaway as well. We have been completely satisfied with all 3 recent cruises. They were awesome vacations .

Incidentally, on our winter Getaway cruise my son could not take his wings( I think it was wings) to go from O'Sheehans. The waiter told him that they couldnt do a to-go box for him. I dont know if this was because he is a 15 year old kid, or because they dont want messy wings in the staterooms.

  4. We are planning on visiting the baths. It appears there are two beaches and a rocky path.

Will swim shoes be OK for the walk?

Should we plan on starting at one beach or the other?

How much is snorkel gear rental?

Any secure place to leave belongings while in the water?

    Are beverages available?

    Kara and Lot

There are a few good reviews with each of the offered NCL excursions that address all these issues. I cannot link to it from here as I cannot get on to my account at NCL right now. There are suggestions on which path to take, says there are lockers and some vendors as well as snorkel gear rental.

37 days and 7 hours to our #3 Getaway GETAWAY!!

  5. Dis you se a lot of dancing on this Cruise?

We have been on the ship twice. There wasnt a lot of danicing. The deck parties ( glow, 80's ,etc) are a HUGE crowd of people, no room for dancing dancing. Bliss nightclub had a deejay and we have never seen more than 20 people in there, more drinking than dancing it seems. Maybe you and your gang can take over and make some music requests? BLiss could use some dancing folks!

  6. The only Haven cabins that have Haven access included are the Haven spa suites.

All Haven suites have Haven access regardless of location

Would be silly not to allow the people staying in the Haven access to the Haven.

  7. The reason you seen limited time slots is that you need to first cancel the dining reservations that you made for that day. Once you do that, all time slots will show up.

    Nope

Depending on your party size , you will see different times open . And as the popular times fill up you will have fewer choices

When I plug in 4 guests I get one set of available times, and mother set of I put in six guests.

  8. Been on Getaway a couple times. Our kids are 16 16 14

The Entourage was very poorly run and events/ activities frequently were cancelled

It is not just a cool hang out place where teens can pop in , etc

But- despite trying to participate and having activities cancelled, my teens enjoy Getaway more than any other ship . The slides and ropes are great, but they also made lots of friends at ping pong, Osheehans, the arcade( warning- $$$$$$$$!)

Their days were full and fun.

In the evenings the kids loved the shows in the Atroum , we all went to comedy and Howl at the Moon... They had a blast

We also had to cruise appeal times so there were entry ofkids and Ebtourage still wasn't offering much

We are going back again in June and they aren't even signing up at Entourage

Your teens will have an incredible time.

Haven't had one in the younger group on this ship , but my kids liked The activities on NCL more than onDisney and RCL. We still have pillow cases and bandanas from their NCL pirate days

    Have fun!!!

  9. We are cruising in June.

cagneys still shows up as an

    Option .

We have it booked as well

    We are on Getaway

Did you try calling? They may have given out the allotment for your cruise- you are a little late to the game! Suite passengers have been booking since right after Christmas

! You missed 60+ days when others were making ressies

But I just checked and Cagneys is still available on my Getaway which leaves 3 weeks after you

  10. My dad has one, never had a problem. Not enough metal to set off the detector. Also, there is a bump and a scar where the shunt was placed, so no worries there.

BUT- you need to carry a card, which can be replaced in 7 days max. If you were to need care and were unable to answer questions, the providers need to know about your shunt. The information can be gathered from th e implanting surgeon's office and your regular physician will also have a copy.

    Happy sailings

  11. Dear Op

My husband and son brought ukuleles on board. They played in our cabin and sat in Headliners and jammed with some other ukulele -totin' folks during the day-didn't bother anyone, and they were almost as good as " Eric CLAMPton:D"

During Howl at the Moon my son was asked to go on stage and play with them for 2 songs-one of the ukele totin' guys turned out to also be a Howl pianist and knew that my wild teenager was also an awesome guitarist.

So your boy should bring their guitars and have a blast. It's a cruise, not a cloistered monk convention.

    And try Headliners.

And grouches- lighten up! The television is louder than a couple of acoustic guitars!,,,

  12. Tracking several Carib. ITN out of NY on the GEM for Nov. & early Dec. 2015 (not holidays) and as I click - prices went up instantly on the cruise fish dot net site by $50+ or higher p/p

We are 60 days out and our suite went UP 475 dollars pp last night.

    I love the fish!

It doesn't affect me, but there is something about paying less than " sticker price" that makes me feel good. We had already seen 1000 pp increase since we booked in August.

    Yikes!

  13. so if you notice a price drop after you book does NCL match the new low price? If so, how do they refund you? In on board credit? Cash back onto credit card?

If it is before the penalty period they simply re book the cruise under the same reservation number and all.

But be carefulness! We have seen a few price drops for one family traveling with us, but the amount of OBC that they would lose negated any saving. You also will lose whatever promo you booked under if it has changed. Another friend, however, has saved 200 dollars on her mini suite , and she didn't lose any Obc. Timing and demand are everything, I guess!

I have not seen a price drop after final for my particular cruises, so I cannot comment on that. Comments here on Cc have said that some cruisers receive OBC or upgrade if there is a drop after final, but results seem to vary.
