  1. I have posted the photos of the work being done on those pages. Not sure how to get them on here. I will keep trying. O'Sheehans is coming along nicely. They are doing the renovation without disturbing anyone as Orchid Garden has become Blue Lagoon while this work is being done. When Orchid Garden opens for dinner, Garden (Aft) cafe becomes Blue Lagoon. Serves all the same food. I have stayed in many hotels that have done renovation without letting me know and charging me the same high price. I am pretty sure most people on these sailings are paying less then what I paid on the two night cruise this past weekend.

  2. Tortola is tendering. They are getting the dock ready for future sailings. You would have more than a couple of hours on land. Knowing the Gem team, I am sure they will make that day that was supposed to be spent at the island a fantastic day onboard.

  3. Sailing out of NY is one of the best cruise experiences we have had. In the winter getting to explore the ship the first day and by nightfall or sooner the next day, warm weather. I love the Gem! I can also spend a bit more on my cabin an spending money as opposed to spending it all on airlines, hotels and car service since the port is so close to home.

  4. You can enter the terminal area early, but you will be herded into a corner to wait until security is active and generally scowled at by the terminal workers until it's time to go through security. There's really no benefit in getting there before security is active.

    Scowled at?

  5. Boarding usually starts by noon...sometimes little sooner....sometimes later. It depends on how quickly the last passengers disembark. Most things aboard are opened (no duty free shops or casino yet). They will try to send you to the buffet to eat, but we like going to the MDR to start the cruise with a nice relaxing meal. we love the Gem...great ship and crew.

    Safe sailing

What time are you getting to the port next week?

  6. There are some very short 2 day cruises out of NY on the Breakaway and Gem in the late fall and winter.

What's available to do? I'm assuming it's going to be too cold for the pool. Does the casino open? Does anyone have any dailies?

Even in the cold weather you will see people in the hot tubs and possibly the pools as they are heated. Casino and all the shops open when they get a bit past the Verrazano bridge.

Have a great time, they are lots of fun!

  7. I am so used to ships departing at 5pm. I am leaving on the gem on Saturday and it departes at 3pm. What time to they start letting you on the ship?

Ship boards at 11:30 ish. Departs at 3, so you need to be checked in 2 hours ahead of departure time.

  8. Most are being done on Port days. You go out for a bit and come back to a change. They have been replacing carpeting over the past few weeks.

Hasn't been a hassle for guests, as a matter of fact I as well as a few have stopped to watch a few of the renovations taking place.

That is an excursion all in itself! :)

  9. So far the Gem has slowly be getting some attention when it comes to renovations. I have noticed rugs being replaced as well as some furnishings.

Spinnaker Lounge was under renovation yesterday and it looks gorgeous!!

Can wait for her to come back to New York on November 22, 2014 after Dry Dock, she is going to look brand new!IMG_0648.jpg.1d260095fb16ca50a06c2521cc52bf1c.jpg
