Port Power

Silver Wind is at Port Stanley today and will then head for South Georgia. We will be there on Christmas Day. Currently the weather looks enough to keep us from landing! I will update in due course.

At the briefing it was, basically, play it by ear. There will definitely be places on South Georgia where we cannot land, so will just view by zodiac. No definite mention of Antarctica itself. If the advance expedition party see signs of mass deaths, they will radio back and landings will be prohibited. One day at a time…..

The zodiac briefings are on Wednesday morning and I expect this matter will be discussed. I spoke briefly to an expedition team member before muster.

On this ship I did a spa and gym tour, but as I am not interested in actually having any treatments, I did not ask. Demand differs between ships and destinations. I still recommend going soon after boarding for your best chance of preferred dates and times.

If you are boarding Silver Wind, you must be in Santiago with the rest of us, about to leave for the airport. It seems there are not many CC contributors onboard. Hopefully we will meet up. Carol

Silversea definitely does have couples packages. I saw them on the price list (and saw the room on Silver Muse). Just go to the spa and book when you board the ship.

Sorry, but I cannot agree with you. StarLink IS available, and it IS included. Basic is good enough to stay connected with emails, social media, messages and sending photos. As @Host Jazzbeau says above, if you want more, whether faster internet, cognac or Dom Perignon champagne, they are available at additional cost .

How about you see if there’s a roll call on a SS ship in Flåm well before yours? Someone on the spot might be able to help. However, I realise Norway cruises don’t commence until spring and it might be too late for you to book the train. I was there on Dawn in August, and we definitely tendered. (I checked photos.) It was only 10 minutes or so, though. The tender jetty was near shops, with a 10 minute walk to the train station.

I don’t know exactly. However, if your cruise is at Flåm on June 11th, so is Celebrity Apex. With over 3,300 passengers, I would guess it gets the seawalk! Last tender back is what? Say 5.15pm?

If the ship’s departure time is 6:00pm, all aboard is 5:30pm. Twenty-five minutes to walk to the ship sounds okay.

I am also just off Silver Dawn. I cannot tell you how many times when a group of us arrived at La Terrazza, one of the group was told she had a booking at The Grill! People so often forget they have made bookings, even though they are listed each day on the television under your personal calendar. So turn up where you might like to eat: it’s worth trying.

We know what you mean. If not a “little black dress”, most of us would have an item or outfit as out go-to, evening out attire. Perhaps navy, green or colourful, but the one to take if we can only pack one.

I know how much you like the small ships! I also like the Pole-to-Pole itinerary, but I will wait for my first visit before booking a second.

It certainly was very delicious! A few drops of bitters on top of the froth is poked with a skewer to create the cloud look.

Silver Dawn has docked. Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale. Next stop, South Georgia and Antarctica on Silver Wind. I am staying in Fort Lauderdale for six days before flying to Santiago de Chile. Don’t worry, I won’t be doing a trip report! I might post the occasional photo on The Water Cooler, especially any up to date information about landing, or not, on South Georgia and bird flu.

Ending the night in SALT Bar with a “City in the Clouds” cocktail. 🍸 Goodbyes and hugs were exchanged after the final solos’ dinner with hosts Mark and Mo. We had three tables in La Terrazza for 20 people in all. Thank you all for following my travel report. Carol

“Left, Center, Right” is a dice game. Players each start with three $1 notes. If the dice shows L, pass $1 to the person on your left; R means pass $1 to your right, C stands for “centre”, which is the pot. The game continues until only one person still has money, and that person wins the pot. We do laugh and have a fun time playing! A dollar bill can go round and round the table. In the late stages some players get very excited by tossing a “dot”, which means you keep your money. A player is not out when they have no money, as they could have $1 passed to them during the next round. For $3 each, we all have a fun and social twenty minutes.

The kebab was cooked for a couple of minutes on four sides and set aside. The steak was cooked for a few minutes each side and then set aside to rest. Once rested, the steak was sliced for serving. As a coeliac, I plated my steak with the coleslaw on top and the kebab to the side and ate with a knife and fork. It was tender and soooo delicious. For demonstration purposes, here is the completed sandwich that Chef Drake made.

Sunday, 10 December, 2023. At Sea. Our final day on Silver Dawn. It has been a wonderful cruise, the staff in particular making it so. This morning was my final SALT Lab class,”jerk rub and jerk steak sandwich”. Chef Drake was asked if he could suggest a ready made sauce, but he couldn’t. His mother is from Trinidad-Tobago and has always made jerk marinade herself, and therefore he does too. A stalk of rosemary was used as the skewer for the vegetables. Leave the top leaves and strip off the rest. The vegetable kebab was painted lightly with some of the jerk marinade. The coleslaw was tossed with its zesty marinade. The thin flank steak was then heavily coated on both sides with the jerk marinade.

I sailed with Silversea for the first time this year, and I am under 70 years of age. On classic ships, I like the dress code and I like to bring my dressier clothes. However, what I call casual, others would call semi-formal. There is room to move within the suggested guidelines. I leave my cool cotton short dresses for expedition cruises.

At 12:00pm there was a cocktail demonstration in Dolce Vita. I saw the mats describing three run based cocktails. However, a group of us was meeting in the Observation Library for our sea day game of LCR. Always fun and lots of laughter. It was still pretty warm outside, but some passengers were swimming. It was lunchtime by now and there was the seafood extravaganza in La Terrazza and at The Grill (with chef Grant cooking), which probably explained the empty sun lounges. 🦀 🦞 🍤

The SALT chef then made dough for bao buns, but of course had two cooked ones ready to fill. My New Zealand neighbour agreed the bao bun everyone was given was nothing like the Vietnamese ones we get at home. This recipe was more bread-like. The filling was julienned sweet potato and cabbage, pulled pork, a pesto sauce and topped with a sliver of pickled onion. This is the Bolivian sandwich.
