  1. I will be doing a Baltic cruise in August.

I'm traveling on my own- willing to do "easy" ports (walking distance of ship) on my own but otherwise looking for recommendation from anyone who has done this trip for worthwhile excursions.

I have booked SPB tours for St. Petersburg, Russia

I haven't posted here in a long time as we haven't been able to cruise for awhile!  We have decided on a Panama Canal Cruise for the upcoming 50th wedding anniversary.  I'm just starting to research.  We live in Southern California so are looking at the 19 day round trip LA or we could fly to Florida and do the 15 day back to LA.  This will probably be our only time to do a cruise to Panama so would love opinions on which cruise to pick.  I think we would prefer the Coral through the old locks just from what I've already read.  Thanks in advance for your opinions!

I also live in Southern California and have done both of these cruises

I did the RT LA several years ago on the old Regal (loved that ship)

Did the trip from Florida to LA last year and loved it. I would highly suggest that one. I think it gives you a much clearer picture of the canal. I also really loved sailing the lake.

How difficult is it to get a reservation for the chef's table?  Is it worth the price, which I believe

is somewhere around $110? We are on the Regal in April.

I realize that is a difficult question as everyone has their opinion,

but would like to hear what the experience is like.  Thanks for any advice,  Mary

You need to call the dine line and sign up as soon as you get on the ship

I'm Elite and I have not gotten to go on every cruise (though I've been on the list)

I often sail alone and I think that is part of the problem

I've done it 3 times, and yes it is worth the money. Its a truly wonderful experience.

  4. I sailed on the Coral in May, I loved the ship and didn't find the layout difficult or strange at all (I'm Elite with Princes so I've sailed on quite a few ships)

my cabin was forward, so I can't comment on the aft. cabins

I loved the ship so much I book a cruise to South America as well (Antarctica Jan. 2020)

I live in the center of all of the burn areas.....We moved out of the hilly/mountain areas years ago because my DH wanted to be able to walk to all conveniences.  SMART MOVE!  I can see the smoke and poor air in every direction.  Going to the market yesterday was something out of an apocalypse movie.  Everyone had the look of shell-shock on their faces and in their stares.  The shelves were absolutely being cleared.  The winds had finally died down but we knew that the promise of more strong winds was in our future.

Well, the winds are back and the fires have kick-started again today.  The firefighters were given a break and we've been promised assistance from other states.

I'll be cruising in a few weeks onboard the Emerald to Hawaii out of San Pedro.  I'm expecting that there will be some folks who will NOT be boarding due to these horrific fires.

You absolutely can not believe what the fires areas look like.......war zones!  These were some of the most lovely and coveted areas  to live in, in Los Angeles.

Hi Roz , glad to hear you're okay. So far I'm fine (In Chatsworth) Have a great time on your cruise

Will always remember sailing with you and Brenda

  6. We are booked on the Coral Princess January 20/20. I never dreamed I would even be anywhere near Antarctica in my life. I agree if we had unlimited funds I am sure I would enjoy going on a landing cruise. We priced this for myself & DH it would be $40-$50,000 to do that cruise. We can visit a lot of places for those$$. I am really looking forward to "viewing" Antarctica.

I am doing this for exactly the same reasons. (Jan 21st sailing) To not go because I can't afford a small ship is silly

I was told that for the scenic sailing the side does not matter

  7. We are just recently off the Grand and were pretty disappointed with the availability of getting a table at anytime dining at a decent time for dinner. Sometimes, we don’t mind sharing but say no to that when we notice a lot of people coughing and sneezing or a lot of heavy perfume / cologne in those in line with us.

If we didn’t go to dinner at 5:15 PM, we were told that they couldn’t get us a table for two. That would have been ok if we were able to make a reservation for 6:00 - 6:30 PM, but they won’t take a reservation for this time. To make matters worse they switched the early dining from 6 PM to 5 PM so many passengers assigned to traditional dining were miffed and using the anytime dining room, with success, I might add, making the lines even longer and availability of tables even less.

This is the first time we’ve experienced such a hard time in getting a table for dinner at this time and have seriously considered swithcing back to traditional dining after many years of enjoying it. Granted, we used to like to eat later but due to a medical condition, my DH has to eat earlier, just not at 5 PM. 6:30 PM would be ideal as then he can still eat at an hour that works for him and I am not hungry again by 9 PM. But, if we wait at a table at that time, we talked to people that waited 90 minutes for a table, many of which gave up and ate at the buffet. If we could make a reservation, problems might be solved, but we can no longer make those arrangements.

On a future cruise on Princess, we are thinking of swithcing to traditional dining and on the personalizer, I see I can choose the 5:30 or 6:00 PM option. I would go for the 6 PM option but only if they don’t pull a switch and assign us to a 5:00 PM time like they did to others we spoke to on my last cruise.

Does anyone have any experience of how they are doing the traditional dining on the Royal lately? Is there really a 6 PM dining time as they claim or are they swithcing it to an earlier time and you find out when you board?

And has anyone noticed if they are allowing traditional diners to use the anytime dining room?

I switched back to traditional dinning on my last cruise for all the reasons you stated above.

the negative was 5pm dinner (even though personializer said 6pm)

that said I've booked traditional for my next 2 cruises

I loved having the same waiter and assistant each night

our table mates were wonderful and I feel like we really got to know them

I think the food and service was better

  8. Hi Lee,

Anchorage: There are several tours that go to glaciers including one that does 26 glaciers and another to the wildlife conservation center and Portage Glacier.

Skagway: Check with Chilkoot Tours for the train to Bennett Lake. You get time at the Canadian National Park that is the end of the Chilkoot Trail. There is still plenty of time to wander around Skagway. It's train up to Carcross and bus back. With Chilkoot you are on a small bus with about 24 others and it was cheaper than the Princess Tour!

Juneau: Everyone says this is a great spot for whale watching and many suggest Harv and Marv. I haven't done them but a lot of people have. If the weather is nice go up on the tram. The Alaska State Museum has a great native culture exhibit.

Ketchikan: There are two totem parks you can go to. This is also the best port to get all the requisite souvenirs to take back to the house sitter, dog sitter, etc. - t-shirts, ulu knives, magnets, and so on.

Vancouver: Stanley Park is a must do as well as Granville Island, Gastown, and the Capalino Suspension bridge.

    Karen

I 100% agree with going with Chilkoot tours, I have used them twice and loved them both times. I did the trip to Emerald lake (its the longer one of the 2 trips they do) it goes up into the Canadian. They stop for lunch at the same place Princess tours does and they have a place where you can pet/ play with sled dog puppies.

I have done Whale watching twice in Juneau- once with Princess and once with Harv and Marv. I would highly recommend Harv and Marv. they also dropped us off at the mendenhall glacier and helped us arrange for a ride back to the ship. We saw bears at the glacier + several other types of wild life. Whales (both Orca and Humpbacks) were seen on both trips. Harv and Marvs grup size was about 8 and it was 60 on princess.

Ketichikan is a great port to do on your own. and as said above get your souvenirs.

Vancouver is one of my favorite cities- Stanley park is a must- I would take the time to see the Aquarium if you love wildlife

  9. It depends on who you are. I've seen people post here showing how they can do 15' date=' or close to that, in a day. On the other hand, I wouldn't go thru 15 in a week so the package would not be a good value for me.[/quote']

for me it was "free" with the cruise so a good deal

I might use the coffee part too for a specialty coffee a couple times, but I don't drink soda either

my bar bill on my last 15 day cruise was $300 and that only because I bought some champagne to celebrate an event

  10. Has anyone been more recent than 2016?

I'll be traveling by myself in January 2020 on a cruise from BA to Santiago. would love to spend a couple of days in EI........I would prefer not to drive myself around (so I can enjoy the sites)

any tour companies to recommend? Hotels?

  11. We are on a cruisetour starting on June 30th in Fairbanks, staying at Princess Lodges in Fairbanks, Denali, and McKinley before boarding Island on July 4th in Whittier. What kind of temperatures should we expect during our time on land? We are used to wearing shorts all summer and wonder whether we should be able to do this while on land. Thanks!

It is really impossible to predict the weather. I've done Alaska twice in September. Once I never put on a jacket, last year it never got over 40..........even had snow in Fairbanks.

that said , I'm a southern California native and get cold easily. I would suggest bringing layers

    Enjoy the trip

  12. great questions:

I usually do what the other posters have already said- drop my bags in my room (my carry on) and go have sit down lunch. Then I explore the ship. (even ships I've been on many times) I usually pack clothes for dinner(and I prefer traditional dinning) as luggage doesn't always arrive by dinner time (I do early dinner)

on an Alaska cruise , formal night will be less formal, I would wear what you wear to a nice restaurant at home.

  13. I got off the Coral in May (Panama Canal) and they had 3 photography classes. I attended the first one. It was very basic. My sister (who love to take photos) went to the next 2 and said they learned all sort of stuff and kind of answered questions and based the lecture on what people wanted to learn.(she said last class there was 3 of them-3 people in the class)

  14. We are thinking about booking a cruise on Coral Princess to Antartaca We have sailed recently on Regal Princess and also Royal Princess Would be find this Princess ship a let down after the other two ships. Thanks

I am doing this cruise on Jan 21, 2020

I got off the Coral in May and love the ship. It is for sure a smaller ship, but I found it in very good repair, loved the crew.

  15. I did this in May on the Coral (Panama Canal). We signed up (at passenger service desk) as soon as we were on the ship (and we were in first group (elite) on. The list already had people on it. when we checked back several days later we were told there would be a tour for sure and that maybe even 2. it was the second to last sea day (we had 4 sea days end of cruise)
