  1. It's the last Thursday in June and, in America, the week-end will feature tempting Independence Day picnics and barbecues. Will we be ready for them?

    LET'S WEIGH IN!

My weight has been pretty stable for the past month but I actually lost 2 pounds from last Thursday. I'm down to 195.5, finally exceeding 30 pounds lost! I'm very pleased but I'm still determined to continue to my goal of 180. My first barrier is to get through this week-end, where there will be ample opportunity to chow down on all kinds of fattening foods.

Glad to hear this past week from Diana, Shootr, Rose (down 2 pounds, yay), Michelle and Jo. We can do it!!

  2. Just completed the Summit cruise to Bermuda and have one big question: What do they have against Mexican food? Literally the only "Mexican" I saw was the Mexican poached egg in the morning. There were no tacos, nachos, burritos; not even a flan on the dessert menu.

Mexican is one of the most popular ethnic foods, especially among the younger crowd (under 50) and the heath-conscious. And in Celebrity's own self-interest, it is also very inexpensive to prepare and serve. Rather than the boring pasta bar, why not have a taco/nacho/burrito setup?

Kudos on the sushi offerings, however the ethnic food offerings were lacking overall, and what was served was somewhat bland. No offense, but is this due to Celebrity gearing the food toward the palate of the typical senior citizen?

I also noticed the absence of Mexican food on my Summit cruise to Bermuda.

In contrast they had a wonderful Mexican buffet on my two Holland America cruises.

  3. I've been on four cruises and on each one there were times when the sea was a bit rough. So I think you have to assume that you will encounter rough seas at some point though, as folks have said, a huge ship like the Oasis is probably going to give you the smoothest ride of any ship out there.

  4. We are looking for a cruise between 7 - 14nts. I have not had time to look for cruises in the last couple of days, since it's Midsummer even tomorrow we have the day off and I will do some googling then.

Folks have been trying to help you but you seem to ignore what everyone is telling you and you keep repeating the same request.

Is there some reason you're ignoring the helpful advice being offered to you?

  5. Hi all,

I'm continuing the Thursday weigh-in's during the time that Belle will be taking a break.

So summer is officially here and, for most of us, our upcoming cruise is closer than ever. Mine is on Jan. 15 and I hope to get to my goal weight of 180 lbs. by then. However I seem to be stuck at somewhere between 195 and 200, after starting at 226.

At least I didn't gain from last Thursday - still at 197.5. I've been considering giving up Nutrisystem but I figured out that it's costing me less than $14 per day, which is probably cheaper than buying similar items at the supermarket. I don't think the program is at fault - it's my additions that are the problem. When I get hungry I'm not satisfied by a tiny entree. So it all comes down to self-control (as it does with most of us).

I hope everyone is doing OK and, hopefully, losing weight and getting more healthy.

    Time to weigh in!

  6. Is there a site where I can find "all" cruise lines at the same site?

I know that we can't as for TA's but if there's some place where I can find "all" cruises that goes within a certain time frame, let's say jan - feb 17, it would be a lot easier then going to all different cruise lines own sites.

We are looking for cruises in jan - feb, 7 - 14nts in the Caribbean, Asia or in the middle east (departure from Dubai), going through each cruise line site by site would take forever..

Click on "Find a Cruise" at the top of this page.

  7. I love the Summit and Captain Kate, and the Bayonne port is very convenient for me.

The problem is my wife and I don't really enjoy sea days and a trip to the Caribbean from New Jersey would require at least six sea days - too many for us.

I was actually considering taking the RCCL Grandeur, which leaves from Baltimore (super convenient) and goes to the southern Caribbean, but I have the same problem with the number of sea days. Instead, we will be flying to San Juan to pick up the RCCL Jewel of the Seas, which has the same basic itinerary as the Summit from San Juan and includes only one sea day.

  8. Sorry, Belle, that you're going through such a tough time.

I'll be happy to keep the thread going as I anticipate being in weight loss mode for awhile.

My weight loss adventure made a sudden reversal last week - I gained a pound to 197.5. I think I know the reason. I had bought some prepared sandwiches from Costco for a meeting and quite a few were left over. So rather than throwing them out (which I should have), I scarfed them down over a two day period.

I hope you all did better than I did last week.

  9. Great review. I didn't visit the specialty restaurants but, in all other respects, I agree with your review 100%.

My only issue with the Summit was the absence of indoor movies. If you don't want to go to the outdoor theater on deck 11 (which is often cold and windy) there were no movies offered, at least on my cruise to Bermuda in May.

  10. Good morning Belle, and all the other cruisers watching the scale.

This week I found out why my back's been hurting. I have something called spondylolisthesis, which means that one or two of my vertebrae are out of alignment. Other than physical therapy there's not much that can be done. My doctor told me that one of the main reasons why this happened is my excessive weight over a period of many years. And the best thing I can do for myself is continue to lose. So this gives me even more motivation to stick with it.

After a slow start last week, I buckled down and lost a pound - down to 196.5, a total of 29.5 since I started on Feb. 9. 16.5 to go until I reach my goal weight.

I hope everyone is doing well.

  11. Noordam is a beautiful ship and I enjoyed everything about it, from its fresh squeezed orange juice (free), its BB King performers, its fresh flowers, its beautiful artwork and more.

If you can't find Noordam videos its sister-ships are Westerdam, Oosterdam and Zuiderdam.

  12. I am going to join up on these weigh-ins.

quick background, i was 300 lbs 3 years ago, got down to 208, hovered at 215/220 for 2 years, got to 232 on April 1 and it sunk in, i'm fat again so I am making a change.

Our cruise is in Jan 2017 so i have time to get to my goal of 180

This weeks weigh in was at 221.1

Slow but steady is the way to go. I was 240, went down to 200 and back up to 235. When I started my diet I was at 226. I'm also looking to get to 180 by January 2017. Good luck to both of us!

By the way, what diet are you on?

  13. Does Celebrity have good evening entertainment? We like shows, don't have to be broad way shows. We enjoys comedy shows, live entertainment, etc.

    Thank you for any feedback.

When I was on the Summit they had three production shows (singing, dancing, aerial) (excellent), a magician (okay), two comedians (one fair, one good) and a Four Seasons tribute group (good). All the shows were worth seeing.

  14. Probably because there has only been one sailing and they just got back.

    ###

I understand that. But personally I would not book with a ship that hasn't been well-vetted by Cruise Critic and its members.

When I booked my upcoming cruise I was considering the new HAL Koningsdam but I decided not to go with it because I didn't feel comfortable with a ship with no track record. Instead I booked a ship with over 900 reviews and an overall score of 80. That satisfied my comfort level.

  15. We were on the RCI Grandeur of the Seas in October and the Celebrity Summit in May. We liked both ships for different reasons.

Appearance of the ship. The Summit, no contest. Much more elegant and extremely well maintained.

    Service. Equally good.

Food. Celebrity had a better buffet but Royal's main dining room was superb. I loved their Tutti Salad Bar at lunch.

Entertainment. Both good. Royal had a spectacular aerial show that gave it the edge.

Fellow passengers. Celebrity has older passengers and they are more sedate. You will rarely hear loud shouting or laughing. And folks who've had a bit too much to drink keep to themselves. On Royal the atmosphere is much more lively - fun but sometimes irritating.
