  1. Just got back to Europe after being on this cruise. I spoke to the captain as he wondered the decks on the last day at sea. Annoying I know but here are some facts:

Max wind speed encountered on the bridge was 170kts, or 196mph

Max list angle was 22°. The ship is certified to around 45°.

To those who say a bit of roll is normal the bit that wasn't normal was when the captain was trying to turn the ship 180° as bow to the wind wasn't working. That was when we were ordered back to staterooms and the ship took up that 22° list and stayed like that (in one direction) for about an hour. We were on deck 12, on the low starboard side, and when it didn't right itself quickly that was the only time I was a little concerned. After we righted it was fairly standard rock n roll!

The only really annoying things were having to change flights multiple times and them not refilling the pools. The couple of (slow) days at sea were pretty dull!

Very interesting information and thanks for sharing. I am sorry you had a such a rough trip after coming so far to sail!

  2. You might be able to see on my Live thread about the topic. My boyfriend and I were selected to be on ABC's Good Morning America last night. They put us in a hotel and everything. This morning we got a call saying they weren't running the piece, something else came up. We're waiting in the lobby for our ride to the airport when the other groups that came with us last night came to the hotel and said they were just on TV.

    Our positive light was extinguished.

    I agree!

  3. insure my trip dot com.

I have always purchased the insurance, either from the cruise line or independently. Fortunately, I have never needed to use it.

I can recall in my 20's taking my step-kids and waiting until the day before we sailed to purchase because I didn't have the money until then. For some reason, I have always felt it critical regardless of whether I drive to the port or fly, if I'm healthy and young, and the cost of the cruise.

This is one of those scenarios (unexpected weather causing either a delay in return or returning early) that can be covered--make sure to read through the different policies and call and ask questions if you are unsure. In addition, an accident at a port on an excursion, unexpected health issue onboard, etc. Actually, the thought of cancelling within the final payment window and not going on the cruise has been the least of my worries. Yet, I know I'm covered for that too.

It is up to each person individually of their risk tolerance for traveling without adequate insurance.

FWIW, you can get a cheaper one that doesn't cover major med evac and healthcare costs and really just covers for the trip interruption/cancellation. You can also insure just the health/med evac too.

This is a very good post. Insurance is important no matter what your age is.

I think I read on a post from a passenger that RC will pay the penalty for changing your flight. Not for the whole ticket price, just for changing the flights.

What else would be necessary? Free shuttle to airport will be provided. I may be missing something.

Again, I do understand the frustration.

  4. Hi, again.

I'm the one who posted earlier to weigh in with how things were handled for future cruises after the Grandeur fire. While the ship was still out to sea, they couldn't assess the damage and make a decision about future cruises. Once the ship docked, they had a team ready to go onboard and survey the damage. That's when they announced that they were cancelling the current cruise and they advised that they would make a decision about the next cruise (mine) at 8:00 p.m. that evening. It was a few minutes after 8:00 p.m. when all the roll call members reported they were getting their emails telling us our cruise was cancelled and announcing compensation.

Exactly. How can RC make any determinations until the ship is docked and inspected for damage?

I certainly do understand the frustration though!

  5. Just happy that things are much better today for all on board!

Agree, that the ship will have to be inspected when it finally docks in Port Canaveral.

Very interesting to see the information regarding the listing factor. We were on Navigator during Hurricane Katrina sailing back to Miami. The listing seemed extreme, as it was like walking up a very steep hill. Still nothing as bad as what was experienced last night!

Thanks for sharing the all of the information on the storm during a very difficult time. I hope all of you will soon be enjoying warm weather and relaxing in the sun.

  6. My prayers are with all of you on board! I am glad it seems to be getting better now.

I am sure they will have to have the ship inspected as soon as they can. Explorer's last cruise from NJ was very bad, as well, and had to be inspected after. Your situation seems even worse.

Hope you will have much better weather very soon and can enjoy some of your vacation.

  7. OP very good advise. We never purchase the drink packages as we get the free drinks in the evenings and do not drink that much.. On a port intensive cruise we always have drinks on an excursion (many times included) or out in the town.

I did miss Mimosas in the morning - so now I just bring my Champagne on board and order the free OJ from Room Service along with our morning coffee!

    Thanks for your informative post!

  8. Not to contradict Bob, but those are the old dress suggestions. I don't know wy RCCL doesn't update their website, but the current dress suggestion is here:

Thanks for sharing the updated information. Even this does not seem to be enforced. On our last cruise,on Indy, there was a man with a plain white T-shirt (looked like his underwear) and wearing a baseball cap for dinner in the MDR.

I think casual has gone too far. The Windjammer is always an alternative.

  9. I have a serious question - I was just wondering if anyone knew how Quantum was running in Asia? Are they full sailings? Has it been a successful venture? Or, too early to tell?

Good question. I would like to know the answer to that also. RC is investing so much for the China market and now they have problems.

I do think this Zika virus will effect the cruise industry at least moderately. Many more young families cruising theses days.

We have had the stock for many years as well.
