  1. On our past cruises with the cost of the cruise ,travel, pre cruise shopping for the cruise once we sailed we always had to watch our spending, we still had a great time but sometimes the answer had to be no on certain things due to a tight budget, But I've been fortunate to move forward and upward in my career that we can now afford to bring a little extra for the extras, Last cruise we had if I remember correctly 700.00 to spend on a 5 day cruise. Just wondering what's the average is.

Reading that word "bring" I assumed that you meant "cash" and so my response is that we usually board the ship with $100-$200 each. But that usually does not count charges to our S&S account for specialty drinks or pub snacks and so on. The cash that we bring is mostly for tipping onboard and for shopping, eats and drinks and other incidentals off of the ship....we absolutely never use any credit cards in any of the ports. But when we add the cash that we spend plus extras that we may charge to our ship accounts, then that may easily add up to $500 or more on a 7 day cruise.

  2. When I start packing my suitcase. That's usually the day or night before we hit the road to drive to our cruise. Sometimes we leave as much as 3 days before cruise day and so we are well into vacay mode days before we step onto the ship. I really begin to enjoy the drive after we get south of Jacksonville FL, that's when I start to feel that I'm 'there' but it's all an escalating excitement from the time that I start laying things into my suitcase.

  3. Just fyi on Dream class ships the aft balconies have a straight down view of the water. On Magic we were about 7 or 8 rooms from the back and had to look a few rooms forward to see where deck 5 bumps out.

Some people with a lot of experience can just learn a lot about how to play those slots? There was a guy sitting next to us last cruise (my first time ever doing anything in the casino) and just one tip that he gave us really paid off.

  4. As for MDR we usually went for our YTD as soon as the doors opened and were seated right away or within 5 minutes. Our waiter team was excellent and after the first night we always asked for the same crew. If the food in MDR didn't satisfy then later on we would hit the lido buffet.

One thing that we did notice tho is that the buffet desserts were always better at lunch than for dinner. That may have been because they focus more on MDR at dinner time. But the lunch dessert counter always had the whole cakes that they didn't slice until you asked for it, and they were all fresh, moist and super delish. Yes we tried them all :)

Oh and one more thing, the Deli....DH said that the Reuben (usually his fave) barely had any meat on it at all (you can probably ask for 'extra'), but on the other hand the tuna on toast that he got a day or two later was stacked with tuna. I didn't try the Deli myself but it seemed really popular.

  5. Thank you. That's what I wanted to know. So it sounds like the same thing. I guess I won't be staying too long at those Slot Machines. :loudcry:

Idk about Horizon but on our Magic cruise it actually was not that bad. We could only find about 10 or 12 nonsmoking slots right next to the exit only door on the port side but there was really no problem for me....I guess the venting was tuned really well. We played long enough to get about $200 lucky and I didn't once get uncomfortable from other people's smoke. As I said this was Magic not Horizon, but just fyi it is possible.

  6. Totally agree that sea day brunch (steak and eggs yes!) can be one of the best meal experiences on Magic, and we usually enjoyed the lido buffet as well on most days. MUST try the coconut tres leches cake at the dessert counter, one of the best tasting desserts that I can ever remember having on a cruise ship.

  7. I always check my bag. If paranoid pack a few things in carry on. I hate having to carry my stuff all over the ship while waiting for my room to be ready.

This. We have rolled all of our luggage onto the ship a few times but now always check our 2 big ones. Even if boarding close to when the rooms open up, trying to handle too many big pieces all the way through can sometimes just be too nerve wracking and we really don't want to start our cruise that way....

You can read about a lot of nightmares that luggage didn't get to room until really late and so on but we have never had any serious problem....never had anything broken either even tho DH can be almost paranoid about that :)

  8. I've been on 12 cruises and I've never experienced the MDR for breakfast, so do they seet your family with other guest, thanks

So you've been missing out! We especially love sea day brunch in the MDR. As for seating they are always very accommodating to our requests. I'm sure that you won't have any problem getting what you want.

  9. Hi-Husband and I love to meet new people when we are cruising. We also like to sit with people for dinner. Our last experience doing that wasn't great. The people were rude, racist, and just all-around horrors. We couldn't get away from them fast enough. Then of course we would see them all over the ship and they would want to stop and talk to us..we would just say quick "hello, how is your day?" and keep moving.

We want to be able to sit with others again..but now we are a little nervous about it.

Several cruises ago we met a nice couple and started sharing a table with them in MDR. But then after 2 or 3 dinners I noticed that the hubby kept leering at me the whole time. After that we kept making excuses to avoid them completely.

  10. I will be traveling on the Dream in August and I was wondering about the smoking area with the nice comfy couches myself. Where they located on Deck 11?

The best couch area on Dream used to be on deck 11 starboard just aft of the pool area overlook, but on Magic the seating on deck 5 port was almost as comfy as deck 11. As someone else said the deck 5 smoking area may no longer be covered if Dream is now like Magic....they don't allow smoking anymore in the covered lanai area, it's further aft. There are several umbrellas but on 1 or 2 days of our cruise it was too windy for the umbrellas, they had to close them. But it was fine for DH, one day deck 5 would be ok or very nice and other days it was deck 11. But comfy cushioned seating (and umbrellas) in both areas. As I said this was Magic but Dream may be the same now.

Oh and on Magic deck 11 by the pool also has cushioned seating in starboard smoking area and all the way around. Just fwiw, can't say for certain that it's all the same on Dream.

  11. Unfortunately, if this is what his bill is aimed to do, it is irrelevant. The ACAA already defines a "service animal" exactly the same as the ADA. However, the ACAA allows ESA's, in addition to service animals. What he may intend is to restrict ESA's from airlines, but that is a different thing from "changing the definition". Not sure if this is a case of faulty reporting, or typical faulty understanding of legislation on the part of our legislators.

It doesn't seem to be faulty reporting because it matches what BDevilCruiser quoted from Burr's website, but yes could be faulty understanding....and then you have the lobbyists and K Street money that can screw up just about everything that happens in DC.....and then you have the fact that the USA is the most 'disabled' country in the whole phreeking world lol.....

    I give up

  12. . So, any comparison of the two industries is moot until the ACAA is amended to match the ADA.

    So once again this....

    https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/gop-senator-wants-to-rein-in-emotional-support-animals-on-airplanes

"Burr's legislation, which he introduced last month, would match the definition of a service animal in the Air Carrier Access Act with the one included in the Americans with Disabilities Act."

And if enough people would email their congressional reps that cruisers have just as big of a problem and that even more needs to be done in that direction then maybe even the cruise lines (and others) will be able to do more for the safety and emotional welfare of ALL of us.

I don't think that it helps to bring scooters into this because scooters are way more under the control of the humans that operate them than animals.....thinking mostly about the NBC article's example of 2 service animals getting into a fight.....and the more complicated we make any issue the more impossible it is to ever get anything done.

  13. We have always gone with the Value plan and that has gotten us everything that we wanted, even a little youtube streaming (music vids) during off peak times. But on our cruise on Magic last week even during off peak times it was hard to just check email. 2 years ago Conquest was not nearly as bad but still I would advise not spending any more than you have to to get Internet. You just don't know how much you're going to be able to get out of it from one ship to the next. All of their talk about 'impoving' Internet speed is just that, talk. We have not really seen it get any better than it was 7 or 8 years ago. So I say go as cheap as you can.

  14. The senior senator from North Carolina (my state), Richard Burr, filed a bill on 4/24 (the following is from his official web page):

Today, Senator Richard Burr introduced legislation to align the definition of a “service animal” under the Air Carriers Access Act (ACAA) with the definition under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), establish a criminal penalty for making misrepresentations about a service animal, and require federal agencies to establish a standard of service animal behavior training for animals who will be working on an aircraft.

Ooops, I should have at least read the last 2 or 3 pages before I posted :)

  15. Sorry for not reading all 12 pages but was just reading that senator Richard Burr from NC is trying to push a law that seriously regulates 'emotional support animals' on airlines. Hope this gets somewhere because yes people can and will and are getting absolutely crazy about this kind of thing and if airlines can be allowed to legally restrict animals then it would give cruise lines a leg to stand on as well. But even better, hope that any new regs would be expanded to include rail, buses, cruise ships sailing from US ports....

  16. I just had to reply to your comments about scooter people. My hubby uses a scooter. He does not run into people but people cut in front of him constantly. They have actually cut in front of him as I was holding the elevator door for him & filled the elevator so we couldn't get in. There are 2 sides to every story, or in this case, 2 different type of people using scooters. We are all human. Good or bad.

I'm glad that you posted your experience and hubby's situation bcs I saw something this past Friday on our cruise that almost made me want to scream at a crowd of people....a 60ish man in a scooter was looking at tee shirts on a sale table. He got surrounded by a mob....a CRAZED mob I just have to say because most of them seemed to lose their minds over a sale that had been going on since day 1....and this poor guy sitting about waist high to everyone else in his scooter was trying to get free of the mob and couldn't. He was visibly upset and then getting angry. I wanted to help him but then I saw that another man had noticed the scooter guy's problem and was trying to clear a path for him to get out. It was just crazy and senseless. Unfortunately that example seems to define a lot of what we did not like at all about our last cruise, just way more cases of stupid thoughtless rudeness than I can ever remember happening on any other cruise. But I must say as well that we probably started noticing more of that about 2 cruises ago on Carnival and then even the same on Royal Oasis last year. And so I can only say that there seems to be an increasing trend of more and more crowd madness + me-me-me-get-out-of-my-way kind of mentality with each cruise that we take.
