  1. A visit from the Upsell Fairy!!!

I'm with you. We loved the JS on Oasis. LOVED it. But we're just not in the room enough to justify most of these things. We're even fine with inside rooms if that's just the most affordable route.

We've gotten to a stage in life that we do book balconies on occasion if the price is only a bit higher. I don't want to open another can of worms, but making the balconies non-smoking played a MASSIVE factor in that, also. Before that balconies were off the table. We got a balcony on another line for the same price as inside many years ago and the person smoked the entire cruise. It was useless. Now we can use balconies, so it is on the table!

We don't want an oceanview at all. We did that once and it was garbage for us. You lose the complete darkness in the room, but you can't actually visit the sunlight.

I have a friend who isn't rich, but lives comfortably. He & his wife ONLY go suites, but will slum it for a JS on occasion, and that's how they sail. They only go on cruises every 3-5 years because of that, but it is their money to spend as they wish. I'd rather go on cruises every few months and slum it inside than wait 3-5 to afford the suites. BUT that is *my* money to spend as I wish.

    Agreed!!!!!

  2. The highest category we ever book is a JS and we consider it "a splurge". I'm afraid to upgrade and have a taste of the real suites exactly because of what you experienced [emoji23]

I guess we must either be cheap or simple people! The costs of those suites for the amount of time we spend in our cabin we can't justify!!! [emoji848][emoji33]

  3. we have never felt crowded on an NCL mega ship (we've sailed BA, GA, and Epic). BUT we always sail at times when there is the least amoutn of children on board.

typically, tho, we prefer the smaller sized ships because we like a different theater show every night. that said, however, because we've sailed NCL so many times we've seen most of the shows at least once (just different people doing them). still fun tho.

This reminded me of another reason I prefer the smaller ships. I absolutely hated reserving the shows pre-cruise on the Allure. Some don't know this and have to wait in long lines and pray to get in.

  4. I am in awe, you had emergency surgery at a vacation island, and you promptly re boarded and went to the wine cellar. You are my kind of hero! I think I reread that post 5 times. I could not believe it. Thanks for sharing the good, the bad and the ugly about this cruise. But to still be calling it a good family vacation takes a special kind of women. One who always see the glass half full. Thanks for getting back in the saddle for cruising. Wishing you all the best on your next cruise. We are on the Escape on Aug 12 sailing and this is a first NCL and only 3rd cruise for us. Can I asked did you have Trip insurance that covered the medivac, I hate to think it was a money/insurance thing that more care/concern did not come from medical staff on board.

Ditto!!!! I was thinking the SAME thing!!!!!!! You go girl!

  5. New to this forum after only cruising on Celebrity and RCCL in the past.

Is the dining truly "freestyle" in that we can eat at any time without a reservation? RCCL says you can do that, but in reality you need to book ahead of time or else eat in the main dining room - or else wait and wait.

Also, what is the space to passenger ratio on NCL? One thing we've enjoyed about Celebrity and RCCL is that the ships don't feel packed crowded.

I can answer a couple of these. We were brand new to NCL last November. Had no crowding feel for us at all.

As for the freestyle dining, we were so used to RCI and Carnival I had booked all my reservations before leaving. I cancelled most of them as it was easier to just go down and wait the few minutes or book them same day.

  6. So, I feel like Carnival has a "party boat" image. However, we have someone that can possibly get us a great deal on a 7 day eastern Caribbean cruise. It's either on the Dream or Magic. I forget which one. I'm looking to get away and relax. We are leaving our kids behind, and doing this for our 10 year anniversary. So, what is your opinion on carnival? If you got a really good deal, would you even hesitate to go? Why? Why not?

    Thank you so much!!

We have been on RCL twice, Allure and Enchantment, and loved both!

We've cruised on the Dream and it was in July for a 7 day and it was amazing. We did have a Sap Cabin so could get away peacefully if needed. I would definitely go and you will have a great time!

  7. No contest, I'm a NCL fanboy. Norwegian does a much better job of relaxed cruising; Royal IS great, but BUSY. Love freestyle cruising, relaxed dress code, lots of dining options and UBP, which is much better priced than Royal. Both are great lines, but I'm loyal to NCL because the product works for me. I want to eat, drink, lay in sun, see a couple of shows.

Agreed!!!! I had a prepaid deposit on Royal for the last couple of years. Have t used it. Came off the NC! In November with two prepaid deposits and have used both already. [emoji6]

  8. We began cruising with Royal and most recently fell into the NCL trap (in a nice way). We are simple people so a Balcony has been our biggest extravagance for a ship cabin. We were not fond of the Mega ship when we cruised on the Allure. We like to feel the movement of the ship and the Allure felt like we were in a hotel, not on a ship. Funny how people like different things. We like both, but the perks offered with NCL and the longer cruises (9 and 10+ days) makes it slightly more appealing. I will say we've only been on the NCL Dawn right after the refurbishment so that's our only comparison to many Royal cruises.

  9. 10658 does not have an enclosed balcony. It is a port side stateroom connecting with 10656 (interior door in 10658 will open to face an interior door in 10658). If you don't know your neighbors both these doors remain locked. We had a similar stateroom on the Jewel with no noise problems. Deck 10 is sandwiched between two decks of staterooms so noise issues from below or above. It is conveniently located near the rear stairs/elevators so just a quick trip up to the Great Outdoors ..... one of our favorite spots on this class of ship.

Here is short youtube video of the Pearl someone took while she was sailing away. 10658 is third balcony from the stern end in middle row of balconies.

Here is youtube video of stateroom 10156 (starboard side version of the stateroom you connect with).

Thank you! Exactly what I was looking for!!! [emoji51]

  10. Great feedback above. If you have not been on either, you would really not notice the differences. I think those two ships are closer to each other than most others. (Dawn and Jewel Class)

We were on the Dawn. Have two cruises booked on the Pearl, thus my question.

  11. Happens to the best of us! Before the ship and local wifi options, we bought three high end watches. One at a port and two on the ship. Came home and found we could have bought them cheaper. Had to let it go so we wouldn't let it eat at us. Another expensive mistake, but has probably saved us a ton of money since then. Why? We don't buy anything high priced at the ports or on the ship anymore!!!!!

  12. This is exactly what I am talking about! I would love to be able to give her my wine! I was (am) a single mom and I remember WELL not being able to afford the drink prices on a cruise...I could barely afford the fare and the tips! But I love cruising and it's a good value as a vacation!

Whoever gets your "wine blessing" I sure hopes appreciates it! I agree!!!!! Our daughter grew up with grandparents cruising often and a few cruises with us. She loves cruising so saved from her tax refund for a simple 5 day cruise with her girlfriend. The extras are definitely a STRETCH for her. Her birthday is tomorrow and she sails on Saturday. We have a gift card waiting in the room for her (pretending to her tomorrow on the phone that her gift didn't come in time so she's surprised when she gets on the ship)!

  13. So...I'm getting Cheers, but I also like going to the Steakhouse on the first night (I'm not fond of the first night menu in the MDR). But since I get a free bottle of wine, do you think I could gift it to someone else? (Total strangers, since my daughter and I will both have Cheers)

I remember cruising when I could not afford Cheers (actually before Cheers, but you know what I mean!) I just remember that I would have loved a free bottle of wine on my first (and second and third) cruise...but I'm not sure if or how I could give mine away!

    Any ideas?

What a sweet gesture. I know my daughter is leaving for a cruise Saturday and we helped her as a gift with a bottle in the room. She's a single parent with little (if no) help so it's nice to know I can help her have a little fun. Find someone deserving.
