  1. Thanks guys this is exactly the kind of tips I needed.

We have verified that the scooter will fit in the room.

We aren't doing any ships excursions. In fact we are only doing one excursion total and it is independently arranged. The rest of the time the plan was to go with the flow and take it easy - it really will just depend on how her knee is doing.

  2. I'm taking my aunt on a cruise in a few weeks. Unfortunately last month her bad knee decided it could no longer wait for knee replacement surgery in

October. I've arranged for a scooter for her to use onboard as I was afraid without it she would just sit in the room and do nothing (typically what she does at home because it hurts to walk more than a bit). I've also arranged for wheelchair assistance boarding and on the planes.

Just wondering if anybody has hints for maneuvering around the ship and if possible in ports. Ship is Jewel of the Seas out of San Juan to St. Thomas, St. Kitts, Curaçao, and Aruba.

She can still walk, very slowly with a cane and not for long distances but I wanted to give her options (especially if it got worse). Also, she did occasionally use a scooter when her other knee went bad so she is not completely unfamiliar with using one, just never on a ship.

  3. I agree with the last two posts. And, IME, if you accept a seat in economy because you don't want to wait for an open seat in business, you will be owed no compensation for the downgrade (at least on UA).

Although of course, you can always ask for it.

Since the OP is flying BA, they would be eligible to receive EU mandated downgrade compensation if they don't fly business class.

  4. The check-in agent could not find their SeaPass cards at first because they were looking in the area of the original stateroom number.

Yep, when she went off to find our new cards, we joked about how maybe we were getting upgraded but didn't really think that was it. When she came back and said we were upgraded, I squealed so loud I had to apologize to the people around us.:p

So drinks in hand, sitting by the pool relaxing, waiting for rooms to open up and my massage at 2:30. Life is good.

  5. AA's had 3 classes on the LAX-JFK routes for awhile. They just got new planes to fly it - used to be a 762, the A321T started yesterday.

And all of AA's 777s (both the 772 and the 77W) have 3 classes, although they will be removing first class from some of the 772s.

  6. From the UK, to fly into FLL, you would have to connect somewhere in the US or Canada (unless you can get the above flight on Norwegian). To me that would be 100 times worse than flying from the UK directly into MIA and then just getting ground transportation up to Fort Lauderdale. In fact my last cruise from Port Everglades, it was several hundred dollars cheaper to fly in and out of MIA and the experience was fine.

Believe me, you really want to avoid the hassle of in the middle of your trip having to go through US immigration, collect your bags, go through customs, drop your bags off, and then go back through security. Yes, MIA immigration is no fun. But at least you will be a car ride away from your final destination, instead of having to catch another flight, wait for baggage, and then get in a car to your hotel.

Basically, unless you can connect to one of the Norwegian flights into FLL, just fly any of the options direct from the UK into MIA - avoid connecting in the US or Canada. If you are flying coach, the experience won't vary that much between your choices (I think BA, VS, AA, and maybe one or two others).

  7. I see you will be disembarking from Oasis of the Seas. That is the one ship (also Allure of the Seas) I would say you would be fine booking a flight at 10am (or even earlier) from FLL.

Self-disembarking for Oasis starts at 6:30 and if you are waiting in line when it starts, you can be off the ship, through immigration and customs and at the airport by 7am (maybe 7:30 at the latest). I waited until 7:15am to leave the ship and even having to wait for immigration/customs for a bit (I was behind all the self disembarkers at that point), I was at FLL before 8am.

Any other ships, I would say 11am or later, but Oasis and Allure really are that efficient at getting people off the ship and on their way.

  8. I could be wrong, but I thought a few if the DL routes still had three classes of service (plus EC).

Nope. No international first class on Delta. They've been a two cabin airline for several years now.
