Cool Cruiser (2/15)

  1. You are right! Reading a mystery with detective MacKenzie and my old brain transported the name! McGregor’s Point - quite a few blows, one breach, and lots of tail flips.
  2. We just returned from HAL Koningsdam Hawaii cruise. Did POA in Nov 2018. The best things we did: Maui - rented a car. Taxi to airport, share with another couple. Had our own agenda including McKenzie Point Lighthouse where we could observe whales in the bay (fabulous) Kona - took ship excursion that included Kona Joes coffee (been there before) but the best part was the Kona chocolate and soap company. The 5.8 earthquake happened 30-40 miles south while were visiting there. Hilo - If you’ve visited Kiluea and volcanoes NP try this private tour: Viator: Volcano safari lava caves falls from C Big Island LLC. They pick up at the port. Our guide (Holo Holo taxi) took us to Rainbow Falls, then a lava cave that we had not been to before. It had a collaspe in November and just reopened. But the best was the tour to Pahoa where fissure 7 erupted in 2018. We couldn’t get there when we stopped on POA in 2018 so we wanted to see how Pahoa was coping. Our guide took us to Leilani Estates and showed us how the lava just rolled over everything. In somplaces it was just heat from the fissures that set homes on fire. And the height of the lava was incredible and the new beach. I could go on and on. Honolulu - bought the HOLO bus pass for two days. Traveled to Waimea and the Pipeline but the waves weren’t big. You can go most anywhere on the bus. The 7-11 is where you buy the card. I think it was $17 cash for two days of unlimited travel. The 7-11 is a 15 minute walk. Kuaui - too rough to go in to harbor. But we had a car rental planned. Instead the captain got permission to cruise the Napali coast (we has missed that on POA because of a life boat issue.) Enjoy the POA. In 2018 it was needing an update. Glad to hear it got one. The service was very good and the food was as well. On other NCL cruises, some of our stewards have the dream of doing a contract on POA.
  3. We had HIA on the way to Hawaii (1/30-2/17, 2024). We could each use a device. If we wanted to use our 2nd device (me an old iphone, him a Macbook) we had to sign out of the first device. Hubby could stream reels from FB and play his games; I could download Kindle books. If you’re planning to work using multiple devices you may want to upgrade but the HIA was fine for us. We did not run into using too much time. Some areas of the ship have better reception than others, but our room reception was fine.
  4. Can’t answer for club orange. Thermal suite pass includes hydrotherapy pool, warm ceramic loungers (can’t control temp on K’dam), sauna, steam room, robes for use in spa, towels, sometimes sandals (not always in locker.). I found the K’dam’s changing room to be inadequate - not enough privacy and only two showers. I think it is worth purchasing if you have lots of sea days otherwise we were too busy to use if off ship on excursions. We had 10 sea days to Hawaii so we purchased. And only one needs to purchase. Your HAL card gets a spa sticker.
  5. Thank you all for information! It is good to know in advance how to plan for some glitches. One YouTuber mentioned that talking with staff about where they go in port for WiFi was very helpful to him.
  6. Thank you CruzerDeb! Wonderful pictures and showing us how the ship looks now. It is very helpful. I’m flying Saga class on Icelandair, BOS to Rome, and so looking forward to it. Have done Lufthansa and Air France as well as AA 1st class in past. Only do short hauls economy. Again, thank you!
  7. Hoping you have a delightful cruise. My companion (daughter’s 80 year old MIL) and myself (70) have booked mostly semi-private tours during our 6-27 Aug sailing. Please keep us informed if you have time and the wi-fi! Love to hear your thoughts on the ship!
  8. Thank you for all the wonderful info you are providing. Our party is BTB round trip Athens, Aug. 7, so it seems like we’ll sail most of the Med. Good to know about the shuttle costs in Marseilles. We’re taking several private tours and in other ports (specifically short stay days and tender ports) we’re arranging ship’s excursions. Enjoy and I hope it is a wonderful adventure!
  9. It was this company https://allenmarinetours.com/juneau/whale-evening/ The naturalist on board the summer of 2019 was from U of South Carolina - where we went to school. So great fun with that too. Our tour was in early September.
