  1. Yes, $11.50 per day is a small price to pay for the service you receive on a cruise.

I'm wondering what the heck one eats at IHOP that earns a tip of $9.25 for one person! That's a tip on a $45 meal if you tip 20%.

    ]

The OP stated the $9.25 per person was for two meals. One at IHOP and another at a mid priced restaurant.

  2. This is exactly one of the roles of a TA is paid for-explaining the rules. I think the TA dropped the ball on day 1 by not explaining the conditions the OP booked under then dropped the ball again by making it seem as though it is Carnival's fault when the rules and conditions are clearly stated.

When booking the OP should have been given something in writing(or email) stating the terms of booking ie non refundable fare etc then when the OP wanted to upgraded the TA would not have needed to make a big production about trying to call so many people at Carnival and make it look like they are just big meanies.

And last the TA should have known that the new fare was for new bookings only and simply advised the client of that. ( if we can see that on the Carnival website then surely a TA can access the same information.

  3. I don't see much I would like on the new menus at all. I find the idea of sharing kind of gross too. If one orders pie and gets the whole thing is it pre cut?Who serves it?

I feel as a vegetarian I am being forced into eating at the buffet.

Although we have cruised on Disney and Royal we prefer the food on Carnival. It seems now is a good time to expand our horizons.

  4. We sailed with two other couples on the Lberty two months ago and the first night found a server we wanted to keep.

Made up with the hostess that we could come within a 15 minute window each night and keep the same table.

Surprised they didnt do that with you.

We have had this same experience on two ships. There were only three of us though.

  5. After speaking with five different people ,four from Carnival and one from the gift card company I was finally able to get my nephew's money transferred to a new gift card. It took four hours and weeding through alot of bs ie they told me the had refunded his money to the credit card that was used to purchase the cards(not true-it was my credit card), they told me they had sent new gift cards to his address(not possible as they wont send them to Canada), also they told me the cruise was cancelled after final payment day(luckily it was cancelled four days prior to that),Then I was told that the money just cannot be returned at all.

  6. I bought egift cards for my nephew as a wedding gift. He and his bride booked their cruise soon after. Unfortunately they had to cancel the cruise but did so well before the final payment date months prior to the sailing date and was assured the money would go right back on the card.

So just now I decided to check their egift card balances myself and sadly discovered that the money was not returned to the egift card. The money was also not returned to the credit card I paid with. Carnival tells me in not so many words too bad so sad I am out $1500 bucks. I will call tomorrow when I can speak to someone more knowledgable but for the record I would not buy a gift card again.

  7. We choose ATD just so we can guarantee not being seated with others. In other words seating arrangements are far more important to us than dining time.

We do however enjoy meeting people throughout our cruise but in other situations we feel free to move on whenever we choose.

  8. Just a note to all you international people. Not from USA. They say that there will be a Canadian and United Kingdom version sometime soon. Will probably take as long as the loyality program did. The rest of you international people I guess don't matter to Carnival as you cannot buy these cards. I tried to get one yesterday and found that I cannot get one as the rest of you Canadians. Managements solution was to suggest that you buy cruise dollar certificates but they can only be used to buy a cruise. They cannot be used on board the ships.

Just to update this post:I was able to buy four of these (a wedding gift from four different people)yesterday even though I have a Canadian address. I chose the "e gift card option" and put my correct address but added an american zip code . This was after hours on the phone with carnival and the gift card company all telling me I can't order them even though the carnival site states that I can.

  9. NO NO NO NO

In the past we have bought our fair share of jewellery both in the islands on onboard different ships with no issues. I really enjoy buying jewellery this way as a souvenir not a bagain.

However recently someone close to me bought some"yellow emeralds" from a carnival ship store at considerable expense. He was assured they were genuine "yellow emeralds" and given a litte card to show they were real "yellow emeralds".

Long story short is they are actually inexpensiive stone that are properly called golden beryl which is a different color of the same mineral that is aquamarine. ie cheap cheap cheap stones

When he tried to return them after having them appraised at 15% what he paid for them they wouldn't take them back saying they are genuine "yellow emeralds". The puncline to this is that the company name is Yellow Emeralds so by description they are real products from a company called yellow emeralds.

  10. My boss just bought two yellow emeralds. He paid $2200 and had them appraised when he got home. They were appraised at $390. The appraisal cert says "yellow beryl" It just goes to show you what we read here on cruise critic is true. If you are not knowledgable about gem you shouldn't buy them from a place far from home where you have no recourse if they are not what they seem to be.

  11. Just prior to our Miracle cruise 2 years ago I had been reading on cruise critic a thread started by a lady whose daughter had an infection on her big toe. She was asking here if it would be ok for the kid to go in the pool. Now she was not questioning whether or not other people want to see this infected toe swimming around in the pool with them but if it would be harmful to her kid. Of course many people came down on her for wanting to contaminate the water.

So right after muster we were headed for the pool when I was stopped dead in my tracks upon looking down and seeing a young girl with a big fat throbbing infected toe!!!!She was happily getting into the hot tub. I actually even took a photo of the toe intending to post it on the thread when I came back but forgot about it until just now.

Needless to say I did not go into the hot tub or pool the whole trip.

  12. We tried it on the Valor this past New Years Eve. We wanted to like it and come back raving however that was not in the cards. I would not pay for it again. In fact DS, DH and myself agree we wouldn't bother if it were free. The service we had was far from outstanding and it was not crowded-there were only 2 other people on the side where we were.

When we arrived 7 minutes early the server asked us if we would like to wait in the bar area since we were "sooo early". It all went downhill from there.

  13. If my boss gave me a trinket instead of money as a bonus I would also thank him profusely but would not mean a word of it.

The staff are sacrificing time with their families for months at a time and work far more hours in a day than most of us do. They do it for money. If you want to show appreciation give them money and if you feel the need to thank them more give them more money.

  14. I too leave all valuables at home even my wedding band. I have been mugged once and stabbed on another occasion. Never had a problem on a cruise ship though or on vacation at all.

I do know someone who had their engagement ring stolen on a Med cruise though. she took it off and left it on the desk or table while getting ready and forgot about it and then went to dinner. Halfway through dinner she realized she did not have it and ran back to the cabin. The ring was gone and the cruiseline took no responsibility (as probably they say in some of the documents). Her house insurance did cover the cost to the tune of double what she paid. To tell you the truth it has crossed my mind that this was made up to collect the money.

Anyway if it happens you will only be reimbursed by insurance if you file a report with the cruise line security.
