  1. You cannot hear anything outside the theater. I was on Horizon last week and they were showing Rampage with full LFE (low frequency effects) with plenty of helicopter shots and animals pounding the city. No noise outside. My suite was opposite one of the exit doors and not a sound was heard.

Inside you get the full IMAX experience. It is wonderful if they are showing something that is your cup of tea. Mornings tend to be science center films, evenings are first run theatrical.

My brother and his wife just got off the Horizon. He is not on CC but sent these comments to me as a BTW:

"another thing I forgot to tell you....my room was 8269.. the entrance to the IMAX theater was on level 6 I believe...you know how the BASS sounds, shots fired, bombs going off etc in a movie...if you are in your bed during a movie...you can hear/feel the vibrations/sounds from the theater."

It appears his cabin was port side on deck 8, or above the front right side of theater.

  2. Taxis don't wait or frequent Brewers Beach so best to arrange for transport back to ship. No snorkel rentals. Mostly locals.

If you don't mind adventure and a short walk back up the hill, there is a covered city bus stop with benches by the University of the Virgins (near gymnasium). Buses, taxies and local jitneys (stop/ wait there).

The cost of the jitneys is $1.00 p/p and drop you back within walking distance to the Havensight cruise terminal. Both locals and tourist alike ride the jitneys.

  3. I've come across barracuda several times while snorkeling. Yes, they are fair-sized, scary looking and have a bad reputation. They did not seem particularly interested - I believe they are attracted by shiny objects (perhaps like fish scales) so it is good to not wear chains or bracelets -possibly other jewelry - in general I think their reputation is worse than their attitude towards people.

You don't hear much if anything about barracudas attacking people but I have observed while snorkeling that schools of fish quickly disperse as soon as a barracuda comes in the immediate area. I have an underwater camera that is shiny and scary me I tuck it away immediately to avoid any confrontation. Yikes!

  4. My wife and I love to go to the beach to swim/ snorkel when cruising in the Caribbean . We have gone on snorkel boat excursions or just explored from the beach. We have spotted barracuda in Grand Turk, Half Moon Cay, and other islands. While on a snorkel boat excursion in Grand Turk the guide advised us that there was a barracuda in the water near the boat but not to be alarmed. There were about 15 of us on the excursion and we all got in and out safe and also had a great time. The fish and coral below was beautiful but the barracuda followed us wherever we went (about 20 feet away). I must say I remained pre-occupied with it's whereabouts throughout our time.

I would be interested if others had any barracuda encounters during their Caribbean cruise adventures and how cool or nervous you were.

  5. St. Thomas has a nice beach just off of the property of University of the Virgin Islands and on the other side of the St. Thomas airport. It is a free beach and you can get there by taxi or the public bus. I have seen turtles there each time I went snorkeling. They have changing rooms, bathrooms and food trucks that park there that also sell cold beer. Nice place to spend a few hours. I also noted other cruise passengers with their towels.

There however are no lounge chairs or vendors to rent them. Still a nice beach with views of airplanes landing on runway about 1/2 mile away.

  6. Metrorail operates from Miami Airport also which connects with the downtown MetroMover. The MetroRail also connects with TriRail which connects the 3 Airports (MIA, FLL and West Palm Beach). Each Tri-Rail airport station has a free bus shuttle to/from airport.

BTW Tri-Rail also stops at Opa Locka station and has a Métro bus that leaves from there too but not sure of the routing to the Opa Locka airport.

  7. An ongoing complaint on cruise critic is that cruising just isn't "what it used to be" 20-30 years ago.

To that, I ask, what were you paying 20-30 years ago during those "good old days?"

According to the US government, $900 in 1988 has the same buying power as about $1,900 in January 2018.

In 2018 dollars, you can get a 7 night OV balcony cabin on on Oasis class ship for 2 adults at about that $1,900 price point. Maybe lower, maybe higher, sure, but let's use $1,900 as our example.

That being said, what were you paying in 1988 for a 7 night OV balcony cabin on the "latest and greatest" cruise ship for 2 adults? Was it more or less than $900? If so, how much more or less?

I think the answer to this question will put some things into perspective.

Thanks for putting things into perspective. Cruising is the best value for a wholesome vacation

  8. My sister, brother-in-law and I recently sailed on the NCL Jade to the Southern Caribbean. When we visited Grand Cayman, we took tour on the Jolly Trolley, which we really enjoyed. But what impressed us the most was something that happened during the tour. We were seated in the back of the open air trolley, and were headed back to the ship. A sudden gust of wind whipped my sister's favorite hat off her head and before we could even react, it was being tossed further and further down the street. Resigned to losing the hat and going without for the rest of the cruise, imagine our surprise when a car pulled up next to us and a young man handed her hat to my brother-in-law!!! This young man and his friend who was driving had seen what happened and took it upon themselves to rescue her hat, then wait for oncoming traffic to stop in order to get it back to us. They then dropped back behind the trolley. Wishing to express our gratitude, my brother-in-law pulled out a $20 and held it out so they could see it and pick it up. Instead, they rolled their window up and saluted as they passed The trolley. This act of kindness was amazing given the circumstances, and so very unexpected. It was definitely one of the highlights of our trip!

What a very nice act of kindness

  9. HAL is my favorite cruise line although I too have experienced the unfortunate changes over the years and months. I still enjoy the spacious rooms and even the drawers under the bed. We always completely unpack all of our suitcases and find organized space to put all of our clothes and personal items. The bathrooms also have enough space to put all of our items and the showers are a respectable size without a lot of anxiety. I have experienced limited size rooms (and we usually book balconies, mini/ signature suites) on other cruise lines. The other cruise line with ample space is Carnival. I also enjoy having my stateroom ready when I board and not having to wait at the Lido deck with my carry-ons until 1:00 to 1:30 PM. These perks matter to us and are where we draw the line when choosing who to cruise with. Customer service on HAL is for the most part outstanding from our stateroom stewards to the dining room staff on the Lido and MDR. The food for the most part is very good.

Showtime entertainment from the dancers and singers is hit and miss but the Lincoln Center Stage group, BB King Band and others keep us coming back. In addition we enjoy the interesting ports of call. We really enjoy the Crows Nest and the Greenhouse Thermal Rooms too.

Something I forgot to mention. ..

Holland Ameruca has newspapers every morning for the passengers which is a big plus. Also Elemis bath gel, shampoo and lotions are standard and much enjoyed.
