  1. Mid October 2018 off the NCL Getaway. We booked a Food Tasting and Cultural Walking Tour through Tru Bahamian Food Tours. It was delicious and fun. I highly recommend it. We went to 6 different places in the course of about 3 hours.

The six places were 1) Bahamian Cookin'-Traditional Bahamian Cusine-had a full meal. 2) Talking Stick hotel-had a punch drink 3) Graycliff Manor-Chocolate Factory and Boutique 4) Biggity-Boutique and Bistro-couch sliders 5) Athena Cafe and Bar-couch chowder and 6) Tortuga Rum cake Company-what else? rum cake!  The guide was very knowledgable and well spoken. We learned  a lot about the history of the Bahamas (think pirates!) and their food. If you decide to take the tour-go hungry. We started at 1:30 pm and some of our party had eaten lunch! I wanted to avoid the sleazy parts of Nassau and I succeeded! A great day!

We went on the Rebel Yell with Captain Claudia October 18, 2018 from the NCL Getaway excursion. Highly recommend it! It was a great day! She had only been up and running several weeks maybe before we arrived. The tour was called Escape to Jost Van Dyke. We took about a 45 min Catamaran trip to the island. We enjoyed Painkillers at the Soggy Dollar Bar. We found some chairs in the shade and enjoyed swimming at the beautiful beach. There are several restaurants there serving food-had a delicious hamburger. Go if you get the chance! (By my estimation, there were about 40 people on the Rebel Yell).

Your post reminded me of the smoking issues. This is my third time on the Getaway and never before had I been so aware of the smoke. There were actually people smoking cigarettes in the casino! Do not remember seeing that before. My DH refused to eat in Shanghai Noodle because of the smoke.

  5. We were on the 9:15 Rebel Yell excursion with Captain Claudia as well. Totally agree with you. We had a blast and highly recommend this trip. Interestingly, this was only the 1st or 2nd time she had been out since the hurricane. We were sitting up top with her during the first part of the trip. She said that several boats ended up on top of the Rebel Yell and it took this long to get everything fixed. So happy they are up and running! Awesome day!  Had my first Painkiller too at the Soggy Dollar Bar-Delicious!

We could hear crew putting out chairs in the morning about 6 am-a lot of scraping and banging. This noise lasted for about 20 minutes. Some mornings I slept thru the noise, but several mornings it woke me up.

Was stateroom a connecting stateroom? -no

Balcony View - Give comments on view, noting if location of any obstructions was an issue. –no obstructions

Balcony Size? Normal or oversized for class? -normal

    Was wind a problem? -no

If an aft cabin, was soot a problem? -no

Any specific problems with this cabin? -no

Any other comments? -we enjoyed the spa privileges and the nice sized bathroom, but I would not pick this room again.

  7. This. I’ve been reading the incessant beating the dead horse unwilling to agree to disagree posts here while thinking “gee, I never notice these things because I’m only concerned with DH and my food.”

I am with you, but you know what, I am going to be looking for ripped jeans when we go out to eat on the Getaway week after next. Just out of curiosity. :)

  8. I certainly hope Jost van Dyke is still there along with the Soggy Dollar.

We are on the October 14 cruise on the Getaway. Have an NCL excursion booked to Jost van Dyke on the Rebel Yell. I can post back as well. I hope it is still there because we are going! Never been to Tortola before.

  9. It looks like our cruise is pretty full! I just looked at the Spa Mini Suites - Sold Out, Spa Balcony - 3 available. The Haven only shows 2 Spa Suites available no other category...Oh well, I booked the room that I was happy with and I believe that is the room I am sailing in!

Yep. We are on your sailing. I am not holding my breath! I suppose a lot of people were like us who wanted to go the Eastern Caribbean for a change. We will be fine. Just happy to be going!!

  10. If I were you, I would look on the Ports of Call Thread on CC for Bermuda and also Google Private tours in Bermuda and see what comes up. Look at Trip Advisor as well. That is how I found the tour I wanted in St. Thomas.

  11. Is there any time of year when weather is decent and there is less chance of schedule changes?

We went mid September last year and had beautiful fall weather. Bright blue cloudless skies. It got warm at times. The only time I got even a little cold was in Copenhagen on a canal boat tour on the latter part of our trip.We had no schedule changes.

  12. Last time on Getaway we had reservations for MDQ, but got cancelled for whole trip. Made reservations for trip coming up in less than a week so looking forward to it.

One of my favorite movies is Jim Jaramush’s Mystery Train which features a Japanese couple visiting Memphis where the guy emulates and is obsessed with Carl Perkins circa 1950. Looking forward to seeing MDQ since in centers around an early jam session with Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins in 56:cool:

Thanks! Never heard of this. I will let my son know about it. He watches a lot of movies.

  13. No, not exactly.

There are slight differences for the dress code for NCL ships. For example, some ships require long pants in one MDR and other ships don't require long pants in any MDR.

It's best to check the dailies for a particular ship.

Thanks for the clarification. What I was actually thinking and did not say is that the dress code is the same for the ship regardless of the itinerary!:D Hot climate or cold climate. Shorts vs long pants or jeans. I did not see many people wearing shorts in September in the Baltic ports.

  14. Meant to tell you, your son was excellent as Carl Perkins. He’s extremely talented. I’m sure you’re rightfully proud.

These were taken during the last Ovation. No one said pics were forbidden. So, I didn’t snap during the show, only during the encore. No flash, which I’m surprised turned out as well as they did.

No biggie. I loved seeing the pics! In a regular theater they always make the announcement about no pictures. Any hoo....so glad you enjoyed the show! I am proud of Kurt! He understudies for the Burn the Floor singer as well. He had to go on in that show a few weeks ago. Wish I could have seen it. I saw bits of it thru Instagram.

Getting more excited by the day! We leave in a couple of weeks! My main reason for going is to see our son. When he is in the states, I can go visit him, but on a cruise ship, you have to take the cruise! Tough isn't it?! haha!

Enjoying your review!! Thanks for doing it.

  15. I have been on the Getaway in the Carribean and on the Baltic last September 2017. (Can't believe it has been a year already!) We stayed in the Haven, but were out and about in the speciality restaurants as well.

The dress code is the same for all of the ships, but I noticed that people generally dressed up a little bit more than they did in the Caribbean. Perhaps it was because it was cooler and most people were wearing long pants anyway. There was a mix of people from different countries as well. Some do not always dress as casually as Americans do.

I would say a nice pair of pants or a skirt and a nice top would suffice. Or a tunic and leggings. We lucked out with the weather too. It was sunshine and bright blue skies for us. Very unusual for St. Pete, our guide told us. I took a light pea coat and layers. A lot of folks were wearing the "puffy coats" as I call them and they would have been way to hot for me. I think our temps were in the high 60's during most of the days and warmer in the sun.

It was cool outside on the ship at night, like on the Waterfront. Hardly anyone was in the pool, but the hot tubs and the thermal spa were very busy! The cruise was awesome! Enjoy!

  16. We overnighted in Tallinn. We are leaving St. Petersburg now but will not go to Helsinki or Stockholm

I am so disappointed with how NCL has handled this

On the bright side the captain does actually speak over the PA system now. A far cry from how he handled the New Year’s Eve cruise

We heard they have missed Stockholm the last 2 sailings so ours makes 3

Sadly NCL has been our favorite cruise line but they are not just breaking the camel’s back. They are burning him alive at this point

    Poorly done NCL. Poorly done

I am so sorry. I would be very disappointed too.

  17. Hello! Do you or anyone else following happen to know how much longer Million Dollar Quartet will be on the Getaway? Thanks!

NCL originally got a three year contract for MDQ. It started on another ship (the Escape?) and then moved to the Getaway. They are into their third year now. The current cast finishes around the beginning of December. I have not heard that the contract for the show has been renewed, but that does not mean it hasn't. I will see what I can find out. The show is popular and was voted the #1 show in the NCL fleet.

Nice pictures BTW even tho the show is copywrited!

(My son is the one in the purple coat playing the red guitar standing on the bass-he plays Carl Perkins)

  18. I was checking three times a day. It paid off when I was able to direct upgrade from a MS w/lrg balcony to a Haven Courtyard PH for half of what I had bid. The price dropped $500pp on the afternoon of July 4th, I upgraded first thing on July 5th, and the price went back up $300pp on July 7th. Timing is everything.

I check the prices everyday too, sometimes twice. We got lucky on our Baltic cruise last September 2017. When the price went down for a few days on a spa Haven suite, we jumped on it. Did not bid.

On our upcoming cruise, no luck so far. Prices staying exactly the same. There do not appear to be that many spa cabins or suites left which is what I want. I think capacity is important too as well as timing. Our cruise is going east instead of west Caribbean so maybe a lot of people are interested in going back there after the hurricanes last year. Two weeks to go! Time to start packing! All my stuff is out in a guest room!
