  1. 1. I hope this is a fleet wide change of menu, I sail on the Symphony in 2 weeks

    2. Glad to see a few old favorites (Garlic soup, Vidalia Onion Tart) plus all the new things.

    3. You have effectively made me hungry at 10 a.m. on a Sunday that I am working. I don't think the hospital cafeteria will have anything remotely close to those meals. This makes me look forward to sailing even more.

  2. Hello Everyone!

This is my first ever post on cruisecritic!! I've been browsing for a little while, and have not yet seen an answer to one of my questions (many others have thankfully been answered ;) ).

I enjoy photography and scrapbooking as hobbies, particularly to quickly showcase my travels. On our Carnival cruise I was happy to discover that they sold their own scrapbooks and matching kits. As I prepare my budget for our family vacation on Oasis next year, I was curious whether RCI offers similar products? And if so, can anyone tell me the price point so I can plan accordingly (not to mention adjust my luggage!)?

    Thanks so much

I have bought scrapbook embellishments in the photo area. They are really nice. The scrapbook classes offered are pretty lame, handed out construction paper, run by someone who doesn't know much about it. I've tried the classes on 2 or 3 different ships.

  3. Was looking at the deluxe cabanas on Coco Kay and was wondering what the deluxe buffet is? Is it different from the free buffet served to all? Anyone have any pics from one and how is the view?

The deluxe buffet had steak, shrimp, cooked to order. I cant remember what else but it was much better than the usual hot dog/hamburger buffet. Having a bar for just those in Cabanas was great too. We tipped our bartender very well, he was fantastic and spoiled us rotten. Seriously, the Cabana was a highlight! We were protected from the sun.

  4. Yikes, being nearsighted is being a factor sucks. I never knew this and I'm nearsighted.

I didn't had a detached retina on a ship, but I did when I was in high school. I played on the baseball team and was hit in the head with a ball. Long story. :')

Anyway when I went to the doctor they wouldn't even let me go home that day. I was admitted into the hospital. There wasn't an opening till about 5 days for surgery, but they said it was serious. If I was to trip or bump my head then it could have become completely detached. This was back in '79 and if I recall they said they wouldn't be able to fix it and I would have lost my eyesight. I'm sure the technology is so much better today. Luckily there was a cancellation and I had surgey 2 days later with a great outcome.

If you think this might happen I would be as careful as you can to not trip or bump your head. Best of luck to you.

I did not have a detachment on board ship but I did detach a retina, after many many surgeries for multiple detachments/retinal hemorrhages, my eye died. Had enucleation, have a beautiful prosthesis now. This is absolutely a medical emergency. I also had laser surgery on my remaining eye to prevent a future detachment. Funny note: I was wearing an eyepatch on a cruise between enucleation and prosthetic. "Pirates" met us in the islands. I had a patch, the pirates didn't!

  5. Hi,

I’ve read a few things recently about not being able to take open drinks on and off the ship.

When we go on our med cruise next month I was hoping to take a double walled reusable water bottle to decant water into to keep it colder for longer (perhaps add ice too). Also I would prefer to take one larger bottle for the family instead of everyone having to carry a small one.

    Is this allowed?

Sorry if it’s a stupid question but I don’t want to waste money to not be able to use something!

Good Question. I look forward to hearing the reply. I use my water bottle on board all the time, it keeps even ice for 24 hrs.

  6. My husband and I are going on our first Alaska cruise this June and I'm curious - what excursions would you recommend? We've got our eye on a couple of them but I'm interested in input from others. We'll be stopping in Juneau, Skagway, and Victoria, BC.

I wholeheartedly agree with taking the White Pass Railroad/Bus combination. On some you get to pan for gold, learn about the Iditirod dogs and pet the puppies! Fascinating.

I talked to people who took a helicopter ride to the Mendenhall glacier, then stopped at a mushers camp. It was very expensive (600.00 each) however, the pictures they got plus the kids had a blast. I do agree with others that taking the bus to the Mendenhall Glacier is a great inexpensive way to get there and back.

If you are there during the summer solstice, being able to have it be light out is absolutely fascinating. We all came out of dinner amazed at the sun at 2100.

Whale watching is worth going to as well.

You will have a blast. Enjoy every second. Don't forget your binoculars and a good camera.

  7. Last June we took the train. At the airport we boarded buses and went to "Anchorage City Center" in downtown Anchorage. All luggage was in this convention center. You showed ID and could get to your luggage. You were given assigned buses to catch to airport depending on your flight time. Basically they expect you to hang out and shop/sightsee. All we wanted was food and a place to nap.

A few years prior we rented a hotel room for the day. Slept, showered, ate and took shuttle to airport. Worth every dime.

Enjoy your trip. Alaska is my favorite Cruise Ever!
