  1. I hope you have a great trip. Just reading your thread for the first time today, haven't read the whole thing. I saw one post that outlined some of the ports you'll be hitting and it looks similar to my upcoming trip! Heading out on my first cruise on June 9 to Alaska out of Seattle on Norwegian Bliss. Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Victoria, BC. I gather that your trip is hitting at least some of these same places. Assuming reading the rest of the thread will help me figure out which excursions might be worth a look, I have a nuts-and-bolts question that I haven't seen answered in other threads:

Do these Alaska port towns have standard AT&T/T-Mobile/Whatever cellphone access? I don't want to pay for internet! Can I do some basic email-checking while at port for a reasonable rate?

    Have a great trip!

Thank you! Yes, I have the same ports.

I would imagine that the American ports do, but I can certainly let you know-at least from the perspective of an AT&T customer.

  2. I think I am totally done shopping for the trip, although I’ve said that for about 3 weeks now.

Last night I bought my gift exchange gift, and printed out my edocs, amenity invoice, and some stuff for the meet and greet. I have a few more things to print.

I thought that a miracle happened and I was somehow able to fit everything in my big rollybag and a backpack, but the rollybag is almost full and I can’t imagine everything else fitting in my backpack, but we will see.

  3. I have been following your thread and am very excited for your trip report.

We are sailing on the Pearl on June 17 and taking the whole family. We have booked some dinners already, but I would love to see the main dining room menus for each night to try to avoid reservations on the nights some of our favorites would be availabe in the main dining rooms.

I know there are menus available from last year, but I always like to look at the current season to see if there have been any changes. So, without taking too much time away from your fabulous vacation, I hope you will post nightly menus and dailies when you return. We are less than 2 months from sailing and we can't wait!! Enjoy!:D

I can totally take care of that for you!

  4. What about us folks who only drink water, milk and fruit juice? Why are we discriminated against? Why is NCL encouraging people to drink as much alcohol as they like for no increase in price?

I’ll just sit here with my popcorn watching the show where you try to explain how you are “discriminated against” for not drinking.

  5. We're booked on the Star for an 11 day cruise in November. We declined the beverage package for this reason. I enjoy my martinis, however my wife does not drink alcohol. Since both people in a cabin must get the package, my gratuity would come to $35 or more per day. There is no way I could drink that much and still enjoy all the other things going on on-board the ship. Therefore, I'll gladly pay per drink.

$35– that’s 3 cocktails per day. You wouldn’t drink that much?

  6. I did hear back from a lovely person who owns Victoria Bike Rentals, the one I contacted a few times. They were out of the country. I now have a bike reserved, around $30 for the day including a helmet, lock, light, map and backpack if needed. They were very friendly and easy to deal with and they are right at the pier.

As far as city-sponsored bike shares go, I LOOOOOOOVE the idea of them, in my opinion, the execution is just eh. I think they are great for when you are spending a few days I the city, and the majority of what you will be doing is not biking, but in my opinion they are heavy, fixed gear, and not always maintained as far as tire pressure etc. once I was in savannah and got about 3 blocks, my partner way ahead of me (not carrying his cell phone!) and I realized the tire was flat. By the time I returned the bike, got a new one, and found him, it was 3 hours later!

  7. Thank you so much for this! Your exhuberance is contagious. I generally sail on the Gem but will be on the Escape in June in the Haven. Since there are a good amount of days at Sea, I figured that there would be time to enjoy the large ship. We are planning for Alaska for next year. I think that the Pearl would be better for me since I plan to spend a lot of time on land. You Birthday Girl will help me decide. I hope that you don’t mind if I check out your roll call so that I get some ideas for our Meet & Greet. Thanks for taking us along!

  8. We are now past the great shoppcalypse of this spring, I think. I tend to get shoppy in April and before vacations and since this time they were combined, well, these are the new things I bought to take on the cruise ranging from useful to ridic:

    Binoculars

A sleeping mask that is also headphones

    A travel essential oil sprayer

    A gimbal

More ebooks than I have read in 5 years

A new coat that isn’t my fancy pretty coat but isn’t covered in questionable funk from abandoned houses

    6 extra camera batteries

    A 300mm lens

    A bigger better battery backup

    Lots of travel sized toiletries

    4 new pairs of shoes

    2 new skirts

    A new dress

    6 new pairs of underwear

    7 new pairs of socks

    An electronic candle

A new thing to carry my toiletries in

    Tweezers

    A fold up rain coat

Some things that fizz in the shower and make you feel better when hungover

    Some other hangover crap

A straw shaped like my name

I am always a last minute packer but I couldn’t help but start today.... filled the packing cubes with underwear, dresses, belts, hats, gloves, and pajamas. I can start packing toiletries tomorrow when my toiletry holder arrives.

I leave in 2 weeks and 6 hours.

  9. Nothing except what I can find online myself - that they launched last season, specialize in rentals to cruisers so logically don't operate except when the season begins, but that it's concerning they don't even answer the phone or emails... personally I'd assume worst-case, that they tried it last year, didn't make enough cash and folded (let's face it, if they DID make enough cash from just May through October and not even every day of the week, they were gouging the heck out of their customers compared to other companies open year-round!!!) and look for alternatives...

If you don't want an actual tour, just bikes, then Cycle BC has a Victoria branch and it's easily reached on foot. Next to Miniature World, down in the Inner Harbour area (Empress Hotel is a good landmark). These guys run year-round, offer scooters/electric bikes/motorcycles as well as regular bikes, and have a solid rep.

For a tour guide, The Pedaler offers tours - private and open groups - and will also rent bikes, and are also easily found in the same part of downtown (even slightly closer to the pier).

Thanks. I have come across those other people too, but I was hoping for the one since it is literally Right by the ships :) I just want the bike, to maximize my time in Victoria, and to get some exercise! I’ll check out those other 2 though.

  10. Anyone know anything about Victoria bike rentals? I know they are very close to the terminal. I am looking for rates/availability/rental selection for my cruise in May, and I have been unsuccessful in reaching them by email or phone in the last couple weeks.

  11. I LOVE this thread so much. We are going on a June 30 Bliss Alaska cruise. I won't do a report live ( I don't think) ....will wait til we are back...but do know the title of my thread already. " A Homebody Goes to Haven"

Thanks! Great title! By then I should be just about ready to relive the experience through your post!

I do my best and most impulsive shopping during the rare moments I get insomnia, so it makes sense that when i woke up this morning at 5am and couldn’t sleep, that I would groggily cancel my Airbnb reservation, a cute room with a deck and a hot tub, 20 minutes outside of Seattle, and book a killer apartment with amazing views 5 minutes from the space needle and 20 minutes (walking) from the pier. At 3 times the price, I won’t exactly make up for it by eschewing uber, but it was still super reasonable. And can you beat that view?

I paid off my excursion today, bought some binoculars, some tried and true comfy city walking shoes, and I think I am pretty much ready to go. 3 weeks until my trip begins...

  13. No it isn't, but is a good thing for those of us who have diabetes. They still have it readily available in the buffet and on request in the MDR.

I understand that, but the op wasn’t asking for diabetic “breakfast syrup,” they were asking about whether they could bring maple syrup because they didn’t want to be given hfcs “breakfast syrup.”

Not that your info is not valuable for people who can’t have maple syrup, it just is definitely not maple syrup :)
