We took this ferry to Heimaey two weeks ago and the water was glassy calm — no problem entering the very narrow channel to the inner harbor. I suspect you won’t have problems, either — but no guarantees!

    Dave,

We are driving around the island before getting on our August 14 cruise.  I’ve been looking into taking the ferry to Heimaey from Landeyjahofn, to give us more time there than we’ll have from Sky.

How did you get around the island, once you got off the ferry?  Is it walkable?  Or did you put your car on the ferry?

     Thanks,

    Jerry

The view from our room at the Hotel Siglo in Siglufjordur, the northernmost town in Iceland. I took the picture at 9:10 pm this evening.

Dave, thanks for the great picture. We’re staying there during our week driving tour, before getting on Sky.  This hotel is a featured set in the tv series “Trapped”.

  3. David,

Great videos!  Would you mind sharing how you put these together? You seem to be very creative and I’m curious how you film these, what goes into editing, etc.  How long have you been doing these reviews?

I know virtually nothing about taking videos, except the occasional clips of the family using my phone.

    Thanks,

Been trying to sign up for the meet and mingle but having a problem making it happen. Any advice?

First of all, welcome to Cruise Critic.  It’s not hard to navigate the site once you’ve been around for a short time.

There are no “meet & mingle” gatherings being organized by Viking for their followers on Cruise Critic.

It maybe possible to organize an unofficial small gathering if you join the roll call thread for your cruise, and chat with fellow travelers there.  Are you having any problems finding your roll call thread?  If so, reply and state the ship (if not Jupiter ) and date of sailing, and I’ll find the roll call and post a link for you.

    Hope that’s helpful to you.

More on excursions!  Those who like to read useless info, out of curiosity I checked to see what excursions are sold out on my 8/3 cruise almost a week after the window for booking opened.  It's just one cruise, so take it with a grain of salt.

Thanks for doing this research!  Was “Heart of the Glacier” not offered at Reykjavik?  It’s honestly very hard to keep track of all of these excursions.

  6. I believe we’re on the same cruise as you, Hong Kong to Vancouver starting April 2022.

At this point, it’s anyone’s guess what will happen with the political situation there. The Covid situation is also very uncertain, particularly in Japan.  I assume Viking’s keeping a close watch on this, but they are juggling a lot of other balls now as well.

Not sure what else to tell you, but Viking’s always been fair with us over the 10+ years we’ve cruised with them.  It’s a tough decision for everyone.  If they do cancel again (we booked to sail on the 2020 cruise in 2018, and then we were briefly booked on the 2021 voyage), we’ll rebook for 2024.

    Best wishes,

    Jerry

A question to all about the Travel Requirement document that Viking just sent out.

If you are working with a Travel Agent, did you receive the e-mail directly from Viking or through your TA?

    TIA

We received it directly from Viking.  Not sure if our TA received it as well.

Currently United and Delta require a PCR test less than 72 hours prior to departure from the US to Iceland.

Actually not true for United, if the passenger is vaccinated.  Here’s the information listed for our  booking for our United flight from ORD to KEF:

“A COVID-19 test is not required for nationals and residents of Iceland, passengers younger than 16 when traveling with a parent/guardian, or those holding Certificate of vaccination against COVID-19 or confirmation of previous COVID-19 infection along with a certificate of recovery or documented proof of presence of COVID-19 antibodies measured by ELISA serologic assay.”

Good/Bad news today.... the weather here is miserable. 45 and windy with rain. Obviously not the best weather for the holiday weekend but

as I looked outside I thought to myself this is probable what the weather will be on the worst day in Iceland. Especially when we are either on the water or getting close to waterfalls. So what did I do.... I put on exactly what I am planning on packing for Iceland and went outside. Kinda looked like an idiot just standing outside in the rain but whatever🤣.  I then called my daughter and had her do the same. Bad news is I was really cold. I was planning on a t shirt with a sweater and then my pull over rain/windbreaker but it is obvious I will need one more layer. Same for my daughter and we decided that gloves are a must. It was such a good experiment I would highly suggest everyone doing it.

Great suggestion!  Actually did this yesterday, in the exact same weather.  Went to the Cub game at Wrigley Field.  Sat in the upper deck, with my two sons. The walk to the park and home was great, but sitting three hours while the wind was whipping off the lake into our faces was brutal.  But fortunately, the W flag was waving at the end.

Having only sailed on the Sun, I haven't seen the dome, so don't know the structural implications. However, the planetarium removal is something that could be performed by the ship's crew, but removal of the dome could require a scope of work beyond the ability of the crew.

Andy, I believe you’re on the right track.  We were on Orion for two months in the fall of 2018.  My recollection is that the outer skin of the dome is welded steel plate.  As such, removal would be difficult.  Whereas, interior modifications would be comparatively easier.  That’s from a semi-retired structural engineer (buildings, not ships).

It starts at the very beginning with a web-site that does not disclose the actual available rooms.

Not sure what your experience has been.  But I booked our August 14th Iceland voyage completely on the Viking web-site on May 6th.  After hitting the red “Book Now” button, I chose the cabin category, then all the available rooms were shown on the deck plan and I chose the one I wanted.  YMMV.
