  1. Given the current expulsions, closures, tension, etc. between Russia and the UK & US, is anyone else worried that we might not be allowed to dock and/or disembark in St. Petersburg? Have been looking forward to this port and hope we don’t feel uncomfortable. [emoji2]

Don’t worry you’ll dock in St Petersburg . We where in Cuba in January this year and we didn’t have any issues. Just keep an open mind and remember not to hit or rock the velvet ropes surrounding the exhibits. The little old ladies guarding the areas will give you a hard time, like your second grade teacher did when you where in school. Not kidding! But I do admire the ladies, they work hard and they want to protect their past.

  2. Lovely! I’m jealous that you all get to eat outdoors. I imagine it will be too cold on our cruise to do that.

Looking forward to everyone’s thoughts on India. I spent a month there long ago. There’s no place on earth quite like it.

Here is the ice work on board the Viking Sun to announce their next World Cruise. I will let Viking give you the information.

  3. Well if the crud is widespread, you might as well join us in India.

Tonight Chef Clinton prepares surf and turf for all who attended the cookout on the pool area of the Viking Sun during their World Cruise . The food under a Full Moon is just one of those moments you’ll never forget. Thank You Chef Clinton for all you do for us!

  4. I appreciate your feedback. You are the second poster to state that a TA would have been able to take care of this.

Yet, when I asked on my first phone calls, Viking representatives insisted that TAs and customers dealing direct get identical treatment. No one should be penalized for dealing direct without a TA. I find it concerning that this may be the case.

Viking’s business model is ....just....so... tiresome....

When I first booked this cruise the final payment was due over a year in advance. From CC I learned that if you call and insist you can get it moved to 6 months ( which I did and really? 6 months?) . But, my goodness! Viking makes me work really hard to get basic good customer service policy in place. I find it unreasonable.

I received an email from the tellus rep, Kory, that Viking has issued us a $200 per person credit on our cruise fare in addition to the $400 OBC. Certainly a fair enough offer.

We will discuss this seriously as there are many reasons we want to try Viking: no casino, no children, port intensive, a real sauna and snow grotto, minimal entertainment, an infinity pool.........

Even if we decide to take this cruise over the other 2 that I found interesting to replace it, I would never early book on Viking again until this policy changed.

They won’t change, just think - if you bought a New Benz and signed the paperwork for a price- waited for the car to be shipped to your dealership . In the mean time” The Company “ ran a short term deal to move cars , they would never apply the new deal to previously sold cars . What sold is sold !

  5. Cruising the Andaman Sea then Bay of Bengal heading to India. We don't have much to say about Phuket as the window there was just a few hours. I guess these "drive by" ports add to the port count for marketing but they don't allow any real time to see a place. Same basic time as the Darwin stop. Actually glad to be moving on from Asia. Many spectacular things seen and done there but glad to leave the heat/humidity behind for a bit. Yes, I know it will be hot in India as well. Probably won't feel pleasant till we get to London. We are taking the overland to Taj Mahal so have fingers crossed all goes according to plan. No cancelled flights! There are two Taj overlands. 6 day/5 night from Chennai and our trip 4 day/3 night from Cochin. We will miss the port of Goa and two sea days hopefully rejoining the ship in Mumbai. DW is still fighting off the "coughing crud" for the second time. Not sure why the ship cannot get over this persistent cough that seems to be going round, and round, and round. The Dr says she is not contagious. Ok, where did she catch it? Possibly something to do with modern sealed air conditioning systems? No fresh air circulation? Who knows? Anyway we are still enjoying seeing the world and will be immersed in India for 4 days. Reports are that Viking uses nice hotels and the transfers work fairly well. I hope Eaches is going as her pictures of KL were spectacular. Eaches, we need you to photo document India.

We are doing the same tour and hopefully will be able to add a little additional color to Jim’s Great review. The only thing that I could add about the crud is -I wonder if a flu shot last fall would have helped with limiting the crud . I had both the flu shot and a brief bout of the crud . It only effected me for a short time.

As you know we did the previous shore excursion and the hotels Viking uses are either 4 or 5 stars .

The 6 day shore excursion had their meeting last night .It seems from the reports that Viking is not assuming anything and have staffed the tour correctly. I just hope they do the same for the shorter land excursion out of Cochin. We’ll see.

  7. One small correction to Wagnerite's post. We are not cancelling all excursions, still planning on the 4 day 3 night trip to Taj Mahal. A bit more complicated at this date to try myself. Much easier to schedule a private car for day trips. Not Viking Sun crew's fault, just "bussed out" for now. Stayed onboard today as Lois has a bit of recurrence of the "Coughing Crud" that has been going around, and around, and around......

  8. G’day Jim. I am continuing to follow all posts and am not surprised you enjoyed Hong Kong and Singapore as they are wonderful places to visit. Distance issues with Bangkok and other places have makes it more difficult to enjoy on short stopovers. And Eaches, yes please - more photos. Cheers to all from me. Regards, Frank

  9. Have been there and done that and understand your position. Guide should have been more helpful. Was it Viking employee? If so their bad otherwise it sounds like they did what they could long distance. Sorry you had such a bad experience.

Viking resolved the issues and Viking make everything Ok . It was a trying time for everyone involved including myself . The guide and Viking needed time to solve the issue and things worked out for the best. I think everyone learned a great deal from this event .

  10. Unbelievable. I would have a major hissy fit if my very expensive world cruise was “a learning experience” for Viking. Unless and until they had several world cruises under their belt I would look at other cruise lines with more experience in world cruises.

Thank you for your opinion, we do appreciate it, but we also are exploring the world and sometimes things go wrong . Viking to their credit, after learning of our problems made every effort to keep us safe and comfortable ASAP. I know they’ve learned from this adventure . I’m sure it won’t happen again.

  11. We are leaving for our first cruise on Viking (Empires of the Mediterranean on Viking Star). On HAL and Celebrity, we always brought some magnets that were useful for attaching things (calendars, maps, notices, etc.) to the walls in our stateroom.

Are the cabin walls in Viking Star metallic?

Metal walls, magnets work well. We use the round ones from AMAZON

  12. The lines I sailed with before offered a beach type bag ..since Viking doesn't go to a beach for a day..this doesn't apply..

Viking has a beautiful canvas bag for sale in their store on board . Use your OBC to buy it . That makes it FREE .

  13. Thanks Eaches. Heather talked a bit about y'all rejoining us at Bangkok and we are all looking forward to having everyone back. We knew you wouldn't take the next flight home. How else would we get all the pictures?? Hoping you get to share some Angkor Wat pics when back aboard and rested.

  14. This is beyond understanding....I probably would be on the next flight home. This is not a case of ship happens, and for many pax this is a once in a lifetime cruise.

Viking did a wonderful job getting us back up to speed and maybe I was too harsh in my original message on CC . In my defense :Think about everything bad going on in the world and 1/3 of your group gets a pass back to the ship and you get to sit on the floor with very little information given . Let’s hope all of us have a Great Rest of the World Cruise without any additional travel issues.

  15. Just so that I am clear....this was a ship sponsored excursion, correct? Try to get some sleep...what a mess!

Correct - 4 day sponsored excursion. I wouldn’t have been mad - things happen, but it could have been much better if personnel did a little homework and checked on flights . It’s a business and the passengers paid good money to make sure things worked. We all paid over 1600 dollars apiece and we didn’t get the full deal .

We are finally back at the same hotel we started out at this morning except 7 plus hours later . No flight , not sure about the tours everyone had booked . We now have to wait until the rooms are cleaned before we can lay down to a long nights sleep until 6 am to try this again !

  17. Our Vietnam experience was quite different. Our guide was the daughter of former South Vietnamese who supported the US during the war. Her take on the war and the result was very different than the guise Jim had. Vietnam is a amazing place and has advanced quite a bit since the end of the war. Most of them like Americans and harbor no ill will. At least this is my experience.

So sorry to hear that people are unhappy with Viking. I am please at how much they do to try to make the world cruise a great experience. In many cases the stuff that happens in not something they have control over. They are learning. 2019 WC should be great. I am looking forward to it.

Well. Come and switch places on the floor next to me and the other WC travelers! Some stuff does happen but this is unprofessional! This whole problem could have been eliminated if our guide checked and confirmed our fights instead of laying by the pool . I will give Viking all the great comments and praise but not this time . They screwed up again !
