  1. Our first visit to Australia has been most anticipated. Yesterday Melbourne was lots of new info for us. It is a modern big city and seemed crowded and rather noisy in a NYC type of way. One of the guides explained that fully 40% of Australia's population lives in Melbourne or Sydney. A bit like thinking of 40% of the US living in NYC or Atlanta. Must be miles and miles of just miles and miles inland.... We went walk about in the morning then had an afternoon tour on the Colonial Tramcar Restaurant, a beautifully restored antique tram car. Along with tootling about in parts of Melbourne we got a nice meal, some decent Australian wines (beer and spirits as well if you want) and a lively, entertaining crew. To be honest, we didn't see all that much of Melbourne but what we did see was nice. In all a good way to spend a few hours. Nearly flat calm sea day today sort of low key but with a few whale/dolphin sightings this morning. Looking forward to two days in Sydney.

  2. Our balcony glass under the railing ....shattered like safety glass should....no glass falling until the repair. Many of the dividers between balconies broke the locks and were flapping freely...All was fixed quite quickly once the seas calmed. We were in 3003.

I think yesterday was rougher for a longer time than the Bay of Siscay was last Spring.

Just gentle rocking this late afternoon but last I checked spa pool was still empty.

I don’t know who is spreading the FAKE NEWS . The weather was bad but here are the owners of 3003 (Roger and David) .Bothb2bc71bdd055e99ae07a65e4a6008e0a.jpgb2bc71bdd055e99ae07a65e4a6008e0a.jpg said that nothing is broken in their cabin.! Check your facts and give us the right cabin if in fact it happened!

  3. I’m sorry you didn’t get into Napier. We were there for 4days after a cruise a couple years ago. We loved this town. We also have dreamed of living in this wonderful country. It was a really charming town. Am following your cruise and really enjoying it. Would love to do this also. Continue to have a good time.

We are in Wellington, NZ today , the island had bad storms for the past few days with some people trapped for a time due to the weather . You wouldn’t think so this morning, beautiful and sunny, but it’s again going bad this afternoon.

  4. We past the Equator on VikingWC and we had to kiss the live (dead) fish then jump into the pool, swim to the other side and drink some vile high octane brew. It was really fun and both Heather (Wonderful Cruise Director) in a VERY NICE DRESS and our Great Captain where great sports and jumped in after kissing the fish and drinking that brew . Everyone had a time, they will never forget the adventure!

And we got two certificates for this Great Event and also being ON THE FIRST TRANSIT OF ANY VIKING SHIP INTO THE PACIFIC OCEAN VIA THE PANAMA CANAL! Pretty cool. I will frame and put then into my MAN CAVE for all who enter to see!

  5. In 2016, the Bluenose Ceremony was done on our way south over the Arctic Circle and included a dunk in ice cold water for all participants. DH and his brother went into the pool together (while the wives stood there shaking our heads). I saw a video of the 2017 ceremony and it was completely different with a crew member taking a ceremonial dunk on behalf of all the pax.

And certificates were waiting for us all when we returned from dinner.

  6. Any thoughts as to whether Viking can or will show some of the Olympics? We’ll be on the Sea when they start.

  7. We went around the horn with Celebrity about 10 years ago. It was HOT in Buenos Aires but by the time we got to Ushuaia and along the glacier, it was much cooler (but not not freezing). I went back and looked at pictures; based on how we were dressed, it was probably in the 50s. DH is wearing a turtleneck and a polartec jacket. I had started the day with hat and scarf.

BTW for what its worth, I think I would prefer working out the kinks with Viking to NCL. Knowing I love the on board experience, I could put up with the shakedown snafus.

Not sure because we are on the VO WC and they have done a wonderful job getting the Sun ready for this WC . They have brought in really GOOD ENTERTAINMENT and guest lectures that are good and very interesting. They have added an outdoor menu by either pool (Mexican, Asian, Surf and Turf) along with their normal Offerings. Yes they are learning but not at the expense of poor service or food . We and 30 plus percent of this year’s WC travelers have signed up for next years WC . They must be doing something right.

  8. Best to do the infinity pool on a sea day for me.:p

It’s like you are swimming in a pool that is at least 40 fr above people walking on the pier below . Don’t worry about it ! Go have a wonderful swim .

  9. We were walking up to the ship in Bergen and saw the people in the infinity pool and my wife wife and I both thought of a fish bowl.

Who cares - it’s heated and a couple of glasses of wine you’ll be doing back flips ! Enjoy it , the pool is marvelous!

  10. I called Viking’s dedicated WC agent and she actually gave me the number of the service they use so I could see how far in advance we have to send in our passports. I was a bit worried because some of this year’s W cruisers had to send in 6 months ahead, and we will be on Homelands cruise until the end of June. But I was told we only need two visas, for Brazil and Australia, and so it shouldn’t take as long. All in all, Viking seems really on top of things.

They are correct, there’s only Two Visas required for the next Viking WC . I don’t know about Brazil but Australia is a piece of cake and GenVisa will do all the work for you .

  11. Question for Viking ocean past-cruisers.......is the infinity pool heated? We've never tried an infinity pool.......how did you feel when you got in the water...and there's no obvious edge? I want to try it, but am scared!

Yes it is heated and the captain usually gives the pool and hot tub temperature during his report at noon .

  12. Per the brochure we received today, Viking will provide a complimentary visa service with the caveat that you use their "recommended visa service". Ask your Viking TA about it or, if you're going thru your own TA, ask them to inquire with Viking.

We used Viking’s visa services for Viking’s 2017/2018 WC and everything work Great . I would only give these recommendations to you . Get your requests in early. The visa service can’t make up for the people who send their requests in late. Also many countries hold your completed visa until 4 or 5 weeks prior to your cruise departure date . India is one those countries. Don’t try and do it on your own . If anything pay for the faster service .

  13. We are on the Oasis currently and checked out Johnny Rockets yesterday. The server that met us at the front door told us the price had just been raised to, you might want to sit down, 11.99 per person.

This morning went to Customer Service and the person we spoke to confirmed the price. We didn't eat there so we don't have the receipt "proof" but with the two confirmation it was enough for us. Although we have enjoyed their food before, Oasis and Harmony, we won't be eating there any time soon. We have been by the venue several times since yesterday, departed Port Canaveral, and the majority of the people were eating ice cream or drinking milk shakes though we did see a couple burger eaters.

Well, if you paid a little more you could have wine with your burger on ANY VIKING OCEAN SHIP . THE BURGER WILL BE COOKED YOUR WAY WIITH FRIES, ONION RINGS AND A GLASS OF WINE AS YOUR BEVERAGE and guess what! there’s no additional costs . PLUS THEY ARE THE BEST BURGERS AFLOAT- BAR NONE ! Down with the 10.00 burgers that should be Free !

  14. TGBoss- Thanks for posting, this trip looks like a lot of fun, and at a good time of the year for us.

My wife and I have only been on river cruises. She gets seasick/airsick at times. This looks like the most sheltered route you can take. Is there a lot of motion, do people still get seasick?

    Thanks

In most cases the Ocean Ships are some of the newest afloat. They use many of the newest ways to cut the wave action, but it’s still a ship on the open seas . When you book your first ocean cruise just give your wife one of those sea sickness bands and all will be good . You many want to start small but that’s up to you . It’s funny, we are on the Viking WC and a fair amount of the guests on this adventure have never either been on an ocean going ship or cruised before. Go Have Fun and Enjoy!

  15. I am not fortunate enough to be on your world cruise...I still work full time and am currently recovering from a serious surgery that I had just before Christmas. I am simply responding to what other people said. I'm extremely empathetic to folks with disabilities..I am in the health care field. I was simply trying to say (not very successfully obviously) that it benefits both the able bodied and those not so to have separate groups...that way everyone is comfortable. I have enjoyed your posts and pictures and hope to continue doing so. I am sorry I offended you.

Thanks for the reply, you didn’t offend me and I hope you are recovering well ! I just think everyone should slow down and enjoy what you have . Remember at a blink of an eye, you or someone you love, could be forced to live in that wheelchair everyone hates ! Enough Said ! Get Well !

  16. DW says not tested for flu but she thought the DR was very thorough. Diagnosed ear/sinus infection and the drainage causing the cough. Says her lungs are clear. Rx was antibiotics and decongestants. Seems to be working. Glands are no longer swollen. She was never achy or feverish. Not sure about the other hackers on board. The crud still seems to be with us....

I wonder how many of our fellow cruiser got their required shots and their FLU SHOTS prior to getting on the World Cruise ? I bet not many - prove me wrong !

  17. I totally agree with deec and h20tstr. Viking Ocean really needs a slow walking group. It is not fair to able bodied people on the tours to have to wait for those who are not, and to have to wait for walkers, etc, to be loaded, and it is also disconcerting for those who are not able bodied to realize that they are holding up an entire group because of their special needs. I'm sure that they would rather be in a slow walking group and know that they are not inconveniencing others. I've had a knee replacement and many broken bones, etc, so I am empathetic to both sides. I'm also not ancient (63). (some days it feels ancient). Even if Viking had to have a smaller bus (Avalon did this on our 3 river cruises) for the slow walkers, it would be worth it for everybody.

What is your hurry ? ! You and I are on a 141 day cruise . Please give everyone a break and slow down . The sights you are so eager to see will still be there when you arrive . Just think if you had to switch places with someone in a wheelchair, how long would you last? Most Likely not Long! Also a River Cruise is completely different from a Ocean Cruise - on a river cruise you stop Most Times in the middle of a city . On a world(ocean ) cruise you may and we have docked in commercial ports with no/little facilities for the able body folks, much less small buses for the folks in need ! I take my hat off to the folks who have disabilities, go for it and don’t let anyone put you down for your disabilities.

  18. Currently approaching dock in Suva, Fiji. Looks interesting from the veranda. DW has been fighting off the chesty crud (bad cough) that has been circulating around the ship. The Dr. onboard seems first rate and she is rallying and ready to go ashore. Very soon our voyage starts to be much more port intensive so all onboard need to "shape up" and get over whatever the bug is. Lots to see and do in the next couple of weeks. As mentioned before, the Pacific Ocean is vast and there are but limited choices for stops so lots of sea days are inevitable for any sea crossing. We generally love a good sea day but after a bunch we get a bit antsy. Just wait though. After NZ/Australia I will be complaining about not having a restful sea day........;p:cool:

We’re sorry Jim’DW has run into the Pacific Crud. It’s not easily shaken ! Enclosed are photos of the anchorage in Suva and one of ship that didn’t quite make it .

  19. Hi everyone,

We're going on the Viking Sea on Feb. 5. I'm an American from Chicago and my husband is from Sweden. We've been married 39 years and live in Stockholm. Looking forward to meeting others on the cruise. See you soon.

Make sure you go out on to the deck when you leave Stockholm . The ride down to the sea is just beautiful and something you won’t forget !
