  1. Those are the authorized uses in the U.S. Other uses are off-label. It's the 10th most prescribed drug in the U.S., so I think that there is quite a lot of off-label use. The original manufacturer got into a lot of trouble for illegally promoting other uses.
  2. OK on the soup, NOK in the cocktail. For yet another Sauvignon Blanc, let's consider Bravery Wines 2022, $39 from Vinoshipper. "Silky smooth flavors of pineapple, and citrus, layered neutral barrel textures, this wine was kept on the lees for 10 months prior to bottling. Fruit forward first and the acidity accents the bursting flavors of this very special win." The name of the winery refers to its contributing $2/bottle to veteran and first-responder organizations. For the outdoor class yesterday, I chose a city park with a picnic pavilion. The rain stopped by the time we needed to move about, but today I'm very stiff in the joints. I've let the hold on the Nieuw Amsterdam Alaska cruise expire.
  3. Here's an update on the restoration of St. Theodosius Cathedral, with some photos. Our restoration team has been assessing the roof structure for the past two months, and the engineers have been working on the repair plan and drawings. Workers could start working after this was finished and turned in last Friday. To fix all of the broken windows on the women's side, we hired WHITNEY STAINED GLASS STUDIO, INC. The company HOLOS LIGHTING will repair the main chandelier as well as four smaller chandeliers. Made entirely of Bohemian crystal in 1952, each chandelier was produced in Czechoslovakia. The plaster and iconography assessment is still pending. The roof repair is the main priority. The west (man) side ceiling was demoed due to significant damage, and all light wood members were charted and will require replacement. After the table box and top cylinder are disassembled, construction of a temporary roof will begin. The primary wood structure will then be strengthened. Our services are held in the parish hall, which is next to the church. We are appreciative of our place of worship, even though it is not the most beautiful. Going from a large, magnificent cathedral to a tiny hall teaches us all a valuable lesson in humility. We are holding together, and I am happy to say that the great majority of our parishioners stayed.
  4. I am just relieved to learn that Butterbeer does not contain butternut squash. My Hartford class today will be Zoom only (all but two students attend on Zoom anyway) and each of us is supposed to be outdoors the entire time, using our phones if there is no wi-fi. There is a 97% chance of rain here during the class time, so I will look for a park or nature center with a picnic shelter (I have no covered outdoor space at home).
  5. I know that @summer slope has my email address, and @Vict0riann and @kazu may have saved it, too.
  6. Many, many visitors to Copenhagen remember the Old Stock Exchange (Børsen) building because of its spire representing four dragons' tails twisted together. (Photo by Bob Collowan from Wikimedia Commons) It burned during restoration work earlier this year, but will be rebuilt. https://apnews.com/article/denmark-fire-stock-exchange-reconstruction-38e71fae46c0ec4d79c8a410cd107c74
  7. If "Schwenkfelder" rang a faint bell, it was probably because Sen. Richard Schweiker of Pennsylvania was a Schwenkfelder. He was Ronald Reagan's running mate in an unsuccessful campaign in 1976 (Gerald Ford became the nominee) and served as Secretary of HHS in Reagan's first administration. I'd accept a serving of maple apple crisp. I'd probably skip the drink. For yet another Sauvignon Blanc, let's try Hosmer 2021, $22. "The nose is of rich meyer lemon and coconut cream, leading to lime blossom and cherimoya on the palate. The finish is rich, carried by soft tropicals and notes of jasmine." I'm teaching tonight on ecological themes in the Song of Songs. My preparation has been impeded by a course assignment for which I wrote three times as much as required.
  8. YIKES! This morning it was classed as a potential tropical cyclone but may become Tropical Storm Helene and then Hurricane Helene. The disturbance we’ve been watching in the western Caribbean is now Potential Tropical Cyclone 9 and the NHC has begun advisories and issued the first watches. There’s still a high chance this system becomes Tropical Storm Helene within 48 hours and eventually Hurricane Helene as it approaches the Gulf Coast later this week. Helene may become a major hurricane before landfall along the northeast Gulf Coast. Some of the latest guidance has shifted a bit east closer to Tampa and the western coast of FL. Anyone from the AL/FL border to the west coast of FL should monitor future Helene very closely as all indications are it will be a powerful storm.
  9. I was less than a year old at the time of the Checkers speech, so I don't remember it. I do remember LBJ's picking up his dogs by the ears. One of my friends is an ASL interpreter who, in addition to the ordinary run of interpretation, interprets the lyrics of songs, including songs in Hebrew. Butternut squash is in season, but I can't imagine it in macaroni and cheese. Actually, I can imagine it, but on the mind's tongue it tastes terrible. The drink sounds like something one would find in Iceland or the Faroe Islands, where rhubarb grows well and is the substitute for the many kinds of fruit that don't. Rhubarb drinks are popular throughout the Nordic countries and I remember buying a bottle of rhubarb soda from a street vendor in Copenhagen. For the wine, let's have the 2017 Brut from Damiani Wine Cellars, $55, ready to drink now or to keep for another 10-15 years. "Our 2017 Brut is bliss in a bottle. Tiny bubbles deliver delectable aromas of juicy pear, fresh toasted baguette, and lemon blossom. A rich, lush mousse floods the palate with a prismatic array of flavors featuring ripe pear, toast, green apple, butterscotch, and lemon curd. Graceful and daring and delicious; invite this Brut to all of your parties." It's been hard to post on this site because the boards keep going down. I'll try to post this later. The board has stopped working. Also, I have a class assignment to do outdoors and it's going to rain all day.
  10. I don't think I've had a smashed burger, at least not intentionally. Rum is available here but Ting is not, AFAIK. Since we're not sure what the wine is, let's go with Hazlitt's Pink Cat, $10.99. " Pink Cat is an award-winning sweet blush wine made from native Catawba grapes. It's delightfully refreshing and makes an awesome wine spritzer! But why is Pint Cat in a hot tub, you ask? Well, that's a legend too juicy to share here. Grab a Pink Cat & Get Your Party Started! Enjoy chilled, enjoy often." If Stonehenge were on the market today, someone would probably turn it into a theme park. I have a 2025 Alaska one-way itinerary on the Nieuw Amsterdam on a five-day hold, potentially to replace a booking on NCL with an itinerary that is not quite as good, but it depends on being able to switch the NCL deposit to another cruise.
  11. I think that mama goats usually do OK in taking care of their kids. Veggie kabobs would be OK but I'll be having a turkey casserole. The cocktail would also be OK. For the wine, I wouldn't worry about its being too sweet, since I have never had a Beaujolais that wasn't dry, although the fruitiness of a nouveau isn't to everyone's taste. From the FLX, we could get a Gamay Noir from Sheldrake Point now for $22, and it would be ready to drink in about three years. "Inviting aromas of bright cherry and raspberry intertwine with hints of dried flowers, cranberries, and notes of dusty oak. This wine delivers a harmonious blend of acidity and playful tannins on the palate, showcasing flavors of ripe plum, red berries, and black cherry that culminate in a satisfying, lingering finish." A peculiarity of the German reunification was that the DDR (East) had to recreate the Länder (states), which had been abolished, because the legal mechanism was a provision in the constitution of the BRD (West) that allowed any historic Land of Germany to join it. I woke early from a horror-film dream and haven't felt functional for most of the day so far.
  12. Lunch was a chicken wrap. After the talk they gave me a coffee mug.
  13. Butterscotch pudding would be OK if made with lactose-free milk. The salmon pasta salad would also be OK. The only FLX boxed white wines are on the sweet side, so no real equivalent of today's wine. No idea what dinner will be. I'm giving a talk to the Kiwanis club at lunchtime, so I don't yet know what lunch will be, either. Salmon pasta salad?
  14. The zucchini would be OK with me, although an irrelevant association gave me pause: I had a crazy uncle who went through phases when he had to have a specific food every day. One year, in November, it was pan-fried summer squash. So on Thanksgiving Day at their house, as the family was sitting down to eat, my aunt was in the kitchen, battering and frying squash since he wouldn't eat anything else. This was the same year that she served mashed turnip even though neither she nor anyone else in the family liked it and, through distraction with the squash-frying, forgot to serve the Jello salad, which was an absolute requirement at any holiday dinner back then. I'd like the drink better if tonic water were added. For a Sauvignon Blanc (again!), let's have the Billsboro 2023, $26. "The 2023 vintage is delivering a lot of citrus and floral flavor, and the Sauvignon Blanc is no exception. Zesty and herbaceous with notes of lemongrass and boxwood with a hint of tropical fruit on the finish. The palate is a little softer and more inviting than previous vintages, while still feeling zippy." I'll mention that everyone in the graduate course I'm taking this semester writes standard English in complete sentences, even (perhaps especially) the international students. I'm teaching tonight, Theology and Climate Change.
  15. I just heard about a "gleaning party" tomorrow at one of the Cornell U. research farms. As I understand it, they're asking for volunteers to sort and pack surplus potatoes that have already been dug.
  16. Seen on rhymes-with-spacehook (I will be in Lowe's later in the week):
  17. Here's a 19th-century painting of gleaners by Jean-François Millet from the Musee d'Orsay.
  18. I use Startpage, which draws its results from Google but doesn't share the user's identity. No on the shrimp and no on the cilantro. I understood the words cognac and margarita but together they failed to make sense. On reading how the drink is made, I think I might like it. For the wine, I might looker for Bloomer Creek White Horse Red, typically 75% Cabernet Franc and 25% Merlot, and a comparative bargain at $21.99 (some Total Wine locations). "Finger Lakes, New York- Cassis, black cherry and raspberry notes meander throughout this blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Puckering with cranberry acidity, yet velvety and rich in texture, it's a kaleidoscope of fruit, earth and savory herb complexities that linger on the finish." NCL opened upgrade bidding for the Panama cruise and I put in a bid on a balcony cabin, but only slightly more than the minimum.
  19. And in the Book of Ruth. The Torah says that, when harvesting, workers can't push into the corners of the field and can't pick up anything that is dropped, to leave something for gleaning by those without land of their own.
  20. A man trying to reach rescue services in Dover, UK, called dispatchers in Dover, Delaware, in the US. Recognizing that trying to refer the frantic caller to authorities in England could cost valuable time, Communications Operator MacKenzie Atkinson kept the man on the line and began collecting critical information. The caller provided the coordinates of the vessel, and Atkinson, who had recently acquired certification from the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch, followed protocols for a vessel in distress, officials said. Meanwhile, Communications Officer Connor Logan began making international notifications. Within four minutes, he established contact with the several agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, French Coast Guard, His Majesty’s Coastguard in England, the United Kingdom’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s Coordination Center, and police stations in Dover, England, officials said. https://apnews.com/article/boat-rescue-english-channel-dover-delaware-england-a593da7a90e80d2be621ba2291877cc0
  21. One of my cousins was a U.S. Marshal. He never spoke about his work. I wouldn't object to the pasta caprese but wouldn't make it. I might like the cocktail, if the elderflower liqueur is sweet enough to offset the sourness of the lime and the bitterness of the absinthe. For the wine, let's splurge on the 2017 Brut Rosé from Ravines Wine Cellars, $39.95. "Like all Ravines Sparkling wines, it was made using the traditional "méthode champenoise" process. After the initial fermentation of 100% Pinot Noir grapes from the Argetsinger Vineyard, it is aged for many years on the lees in bottle and then hand riddled. The wine is rich and lifted with bright orange and red fruits, along with a creamy texture and long finish. Drink now, or let it age for another 5-8 years for continual evolution." @mamaofami A friend who was a hospice nurse practitioner says that most families don't know how many ways hospice services can help and don't call as early as they might. The contractor doing the smart-meter installation called to schedule an appointment--the technician who was in the neighborhood last week had neither the correct meter for a photovoltaic net-metering system, nor the training to install one. It's now supposed to happen October 31.
  22. Because of lack of both eggplant salad and inspiration, dinner tonight was a salad of cucumber, celery, yellow pepper, and cherry tomatoes, and a grilled-cheese sandwich.
