True, not 100% guaranteed. But I have never heard of a single incident were a ship left behind a person on their own excursion.  And only know of one couple who missed a ship taking cruise air and their flight didn't arrive to Miami until 11 pm for a 4pm cruise.  And I know of people who have missed ships when not booked thru cruise by being an hour late.  So not “always” but “almost always”. I like my odds much better that way.

I do remember reading on CC about people being left behind in Alaska that were on a ship sponsored tour.  It had to do with tides.  The ship HAD to leave.  I remember the people affected had nothing but good things to say about how it was handled.  It was a Princess ship if I remember correctly.

  2. We felt a little let down that it was not in the main dining room and you just ordered off the menu.  Our officers were a doctor and a housekeeping manager.  There were four passenger no-shows.  The conversation was interesting, though, and we were invited to tour the Haven by the housekeeping manager.  We declined.

  3. We call the money we lose in a casino our "Entertainment Fee."

I've only come out ahead on one cruise.  We don't risk a lot on a cruise because we don't play enough to get perks on the cruise ship and the play doesn't apply to our land based casino VIP levels.

  4. Not a terrible table mate, but an odd one.  Every night for dinner her entire meal consisted of things not on the menu.  Special requests.  It took forever for her to order.  But I forgave her when she talked the head waiter into getting apple pie for Thanksgiving dinner the next night.  They brought out the biggest whole pie I have ever seen.  It was a four-top we were at so we shared it with a couple tables near us.

  5. We took the Xpedition twice.  Both times it was under capacity and we loved it.

Second smallest was the Viking Yangtze River cruise.  I'd have to look up the name of the ship.  Our cabin was quite uncomfortable.  The humidity was so bad the sheets were damp to the touch when you went to bed.

  6. All the women in my department were called together and told to never touch the men who were visiting from Saudi Arabia.  Not sure if the reverse was OK.

And I also seem to remember that in Thailand we were warned to never touch the robes of the monks you'd see on the streets.  Vaguely remember that the monk would have to burn his robe if we touched them.   I may be having a senior moment on that one so take it with a grain of salt.

The only really rude encounter I ever had was in a department store in Paris.  I asked in English where the restroom was.  I called it the bathroom.  Two clerks started saying "baaaathrooooom" over and over again.

They scan your card and it makes a sound when accepted, both when leaving and boarding the ship. If no sound is made, the staff knows it hasn't been accepted, and will re-scan the card. Most modern systems also display the passenger's photo for further confirmation. Yes, mistakes can happen, but highly unlikely.

Unless the passenger climbs up one of the ropes securing the ship to shore, the staff will know if that passenger is aboard or not. 😁

  9. My only grandchild is 15, almost 16.  Ever since she was a tiny baby being responsible for her by myself was scary.  If anything, I would become hyper-vigilant.  Having her even get injured much less dead would have been a horrible thing.  I feel so bad for the grandfather.  He will go to his grave with this on his conscience.
