  1. When I am considering possibly adding a 3rd or 4th person, I call to book a cabin that holds that many from the start. Then if I add, there will not be a cabin change. They are usually ok with doing it this way.

They have great customer service - I would just call.

  2. What is interesting about this statement is you put no focus on how much MORE we get on the ships. In the not so distant past, very few cabins had a verandah, there were no TV's in cabins, no internet availability, no specialty restaurants and for those who look for it, ice skating rinks, mini golf, rock climbing walls etc

The ships are so much more luxurious, so many bars, dining areas, pools, night clubs...... In some ways we are getting far more. :)

This is a great point! And, from my perspective, I can't take my kids on a comparable (in MY terms) land-based vacation and pay less than we pay for a cruise. Throw in my ability to actually relax, and I am hooked :D

  3. Weather there is unpredictable, just like anywhere. Don't let it concern you! We had downpours two weeks ago in Jamaica, and it had been raining there for three days straight. But the locals said they were in a drought before that, so they welcomed the rain.

Eastern/Western are more common (Eastern is my preference between the two), but if the Southern itinerary works for you, I would do that first without hesitation

  4. What a timely topic!

I took my kids out for two weeks in December, as I always do. I notified the school in advance, and my kids got their assignments to take along. My daughter is now in 7th grade, and is in honor's classes and on the elite principal's honor roll.

She did all of her work, and is actually ahead now, as they didn't get as much done in class while we were away.

Yet, yesterday I got a letter in the mail from the 7th grade "team" warning me that attendance is important and to speak to my daughter about the importance of good attendance. Now, I explained in my notice to them in November that I understand that they all don't agree with my position, and I assured them that the work would be done. Did they really need to send a threatening letter

  5. The only awesome meals aboard ship have been in the Vintage Room on Crystal. These are custom wine-pairing meals for a set dinner of 10-12 people. Otherwise, ship food can be very good to excellent, but nowhere near the gourmet quality I find on land. A couple of great spots include Sbraga in Philadelphia, The Nest in Siem Reap, and any Tom Colicchio restaurant in NYC. And they all blow away shipboard dining.

If the best meal you've ever had is an a shipboard steakhouse, you need to get out more, IMO. Maybe even in SoFla before/after a cruise.

    To each his/her own

  6. I am "riding that wave" also! In April I will be taking my 5th free Carnival casino cruise, and I have another offer out there that I am considering.

I have read about NCL, but I play mainly tables and ASSUME the payouts are the same (3-card poker, caribbean stud, let-it-ride), but I honestly don't know.

If I have to purchase a cruise, I will definitely consider Norwegian and see how they compare for me.

I am in RCCL player club, but find them stingy...

  7. my land casino gave me another 'free' 7day cruise.

this time i'm choosing the Bahamas on the Breakaway.

    taxes: 135

    ncf: 185

    total = $320

    regular price is $522/person.

so this is only costing my land casino $200. and probably less since they probably negotiated lower rates.

so why isn't taxes/port fees usually included in these 'free' offers?

Are you sure the regular price wouldn;t then be subject to the port charges and taxes?

We ave done a bunch of Carnival freebies and def only pay the mandatory port charges and tax (average $125 pp, depending on itinerary)

  8. Having sailed on Deck 2 and Deck 6, we are sailing in April on Deck 7 for all of the reasons provided by others. I agree that your deck 7 cabin should not be given up. Even for location on Deck 7, the ship is realtively small and you will find it a convenient location.

Happy sailing - I love love love Splendor :D
