Cool Cruiser

Cool Cruiser (2/15)

  1. On another thread someone said they sat at the front of the magic carpet just to get a little bit of a forward view which is pretty sad. Solarium side view window seats fill up fast on a sea day. Given the design constraints, Eden is probably the best that anyone could do. The 3 deck view of the wake is impressive but isn’t what OP is looking for.
  2. There will be 2 song and dance troops, one based in the main theatre, the other in Eden. The Eden troop also does quirky acrobatics and sometimes performs in the club. The main theatre orchestra is a rock band with keyboard and horns. They perform at the production shows and back up the headliners. On a seven night cruise expect 3 production shows and 4 headliners (comedians, magicians, singers). Bar musicians will typically be one solo singer guitarist or piano player, two pairs of singer plus musician, and one all purpose bar band that takes requests and plays stuff you can dance to. There will be about 50 professional entertainers on board. There are 2 significant shows per night, one in the main theatre and one in Eden or the Club. Sometimes the headliners do a smaller second show in the Club. So you can easily spend 5pm to midnight seeing 4 different acts before and after dinner.
  3. It’s Secondo Bacio on the Apex deck plan
  4. I had the green mescal drink that comes in the smoke box. $20. The server insisted that I video the unboxing which was a nuisance. One and done for Eden specialty cocktails. I prefer the drinks and the vibe at the Martini Bar.
  5. IVs are not balconies but they provide an extension to your living space. With bed-by-bath, and with the desk top slid in and the desk chair flipped around, five people can sit facing each other with no one sitting on the bed. Where else can you do that in a non suite cabin?
  6. Serious players should approach cruise ship pickleball the way a division 1 volleyball player would approach the pool deck volleyball tournament. It’s just a fun way to meet some people. Don’t bother bringing your own gear. Walking shoes are fine. And the Walmart grade paddles provided by the ship are fine.
  7. Yes, and Craft Social has real lime juice. Most of the bars have premixed lime syrup. I like the Martini Bar manhattans. You always get premium liquors at MB even if you don’t specify. And drinks on the rocks are made properly. Mixed in a shaker then poured over fresh ice.
  8. We had the Trio on Apex in March 2024. We bought it during the 2023 Memorial Day sale. I think it was less than $100 per person. We had an 11:30 boarding time, arrived at the terminal at 11:15, and by 11:30 we had boarded, dropped off our bags, checked in at our muster station, and we were seated at the Specialty Dining desk across from Guest Services. It was that multi purpose desk where they put up a cardboard sign to designate what it is being used for. Within 5 minutes we had reservations at Eden, Fine Cut, and Raw on 5 including our preferred 7:30 on a milestone birthday at Fine Cut, which was the main reason we were in a hurry to make reservations. The lunch was at Raw on 5 on the last sea day. We had a $45 per person credit. In 2023 that would pay for the Imperial Tower for 2, but the price has gone up to $120. Our mistake was making a 1:30 reservation. They were out of oysters. We had planned on ordering a couple of plates at a time over an hour or so, but at 2:10 our server told us it was last call because the kitchen was closing. We ordered a couple more items but we didn’t come close to our $45 limit. Another Raw on 5 detail: the web and app don’t show sake by the glass but it’s on the paper menu in the restaurant. Overall the Trio was great value and we were lucky managing the reservation risk. OP might be interested in knowing that as we prepared for the “Unknown Pleasures” of Eden we were seated around the same time as several other tables and the sommelier became quite flustered getting all of the drinks. She brought the wrong wine to our table and my wife said to me “She’s Lost Control”.
  9. Even with a no transaction fee card, you typically pay a 3% premium over the midpoint of the bid/ask spread, which is the number you see if you google US$/C$. You can typically move money from C$ chequing to US$ chequing at a 2% premium, and then pay your US$ credit card. Or you can use a site like XE.com and pay around 0.5%. I've used them, but they are not regulated like a bank so do your own research. If you are booking a suite on a round the world cruise, you can get a quote from the trading desk at your bank that will likely be less than 1% and will be valid for 30 minutes. Or if you really want zero cost foreign exchange, you can go down the internet rabbit hole of Norbert's Gambit which may be legal but I'm really not sure.
  10. They could make the bifold doors weatherproof. But given the width of the opening that would probably be too expensive. So they could replace the bifold doors with an opening of only six feet wide consisting of 2 pains of glass that slide over each other. Then after you step out, you slide the panes of glass back to the closed position to protect the interior from the exterior weather. I think I'll apply for a patent.
  11. Our personal best was 12 bottles between 2 people. Another time we brought back 10 bottles. Fully declared and no duty. Both times we were on 2 week vacations in the US. We have also ordered wine from our favourite California winery delivered to Detroit. Drove back and forth across the border to pick it up and paid full tax and duty on all 12 bottles. Brought the cost up to about the same as the LCBO.
  12. I asked my doctor about the patch back when it was available in Canada. He described some side effects, which are rare, but require prompt hospitalization. I decided not to take it. Having a bunch of other GI issues can make side effects more likely. And remember the advice of Satchel Paige: "If your stomach disputes you, lie down and pacify it with cool thoughts."
  13. Can't go wrong with what's been posted so far. My opinions: Best at the port: Grills Best Food: Luna Kahuna - Cocoa Beach Best Fine Dining Experience: Fat Snook - way at the far end of Cocoa Beach Best Cheap Eats: Papa Vito's - Cape Canaveral Best Place We Always End Up At Cause We Can't Decide on Anywhere Else: Sage Bistro - Cape Canaveral And answering the questions that were not asked: Best Lunch: Vargas - Cape Canaveral (tiny place, you may have to eat your cubano in the parking lot), Best Breakfast: Simply Delicious - Cocoa Beach, Best Beach Bar: Sandbar Sports Grill - Cocoa Beach (good vibes, can't vouch for the food)
