  1. Marie, I sent you an email. I don't normally ask for anything and I love your style. I could really use motivation right now emotionally and I think this would help me. Chemo (and just cancer in generally) really takes a toll on us. I hope you're feeling better and recovering from your battle. I'm two years into mine and while it's slowly winning I'm not letting it take me for a few more years if I have my way. :)

Sherilyn, I just wanted to send you a message of support. Cancer sucks. You are a strong and beautiful woman. I hope you have many more enjoyable years.

  2. We chose HAL for Alaska based on these factors:

    - Departure from Vancouver, so you cruise the Inside Passage. Beautiful scenery, and more sheltered from rough seas. This turned out to be a very good decision as the seas were very rough on our sailing. We really only felt them when we hit open water, but cruisers on other cruise lines that left from Seattle had it really bad.

    - Glacier Bay. I had read that it was beautiful, and a must-see, and it was.

    - Return voyage, rather than one-way, as that is what we wanted.

I prefer Carnival, but for Alaska, HAL (Zuiderdam) turned out perfectly, and yes, it was more expensive, but I figured we might only go once.

We got a spa pass for this trip, and it was so beautiful sitting in the heated lounge chairs and watching the scenery go by. I have very fond memories of that cruise.

  3. It's not that I hate changing lenses its that in a place like AK you'll be doing it all the time. Take a look at the Tamron (18 - 270). You might find it a fit. I have seen it recently for under $400 (with rebate).

That's the lens that I use for travel on my T3i, and I really like it. At home I use my nifty fifty about 90% of the time. Love that thing.

  4. I will be double nickels this summer, also. My son is getting married in August, so it will likely be hot. My dress will be tea length. I am planning to do the sunless tanner, and that, along with a nice pedicure, will hopefully be formal enough. I am hoping to find a nice pair of silver dressy sandals with a low heel to go along with the dress.

  5. I want to thank you so much for doing this trip report. It is fantastic! My husband and I were on the Inaugural sailing of the Carnival Breeze doing almost the same itinerary. You review has brought back so many great memories.

You and your wife seem to have such a great relationship. Congratulations on 30 years of marriage. I'm so glad you got to celebrate it by taking this wonderful cruise.

  6. Marie, I just have to tell you that you have exquisite taste! You always look so stylish and elegant. Your husband is one lucky man!

On a separate note, I have a question for all of you; I'm looking for some advice. In December of last year my brother passed away at the age of 54 from heart failure caused by all of the cancer treatments he received as a teen. It was fairly sudden and very tragic; he was an incredible man and one of my best friends. We are taking his widow on a cruise at the end of June to try and give her some smiles; she has been completely devastated and lost since his death. They were married for 30 years. Anyway, it has been my routine to buy gifts for all the ladies sailing with me to celebrate our cruise; last year it was cruise ship Pandora beads. They were a huge hit! I would like to do something special for my sister-in-law for this cruise, as she has never cruised with us before. Do any of you have suggestions on something special that I can get for her that would be meaningful and would remind her how much we love her and are there for her? I thought about a spa certificate, but I'm just not sure. I sure could use some suggestions!

Kate, I lost my husband in December too. He was 64. My heart goes out to you and your SIL. I know what you are going through. The spa idea sounds great. Why don't you go together for a girls spa day. She might really like that. It is going to be hard for her to go on this cruise without her husband. I think the more you can do things with her, the easier it will be for her.

  7. OK, I want this dress from Avenue: http://www.avenue.com/clothing/Sequined-Blouson-Cold-Shoulder-Dress.aspx?PfId=349863&DeptId=22430&ProductTypeId=1

This would be PERFECT for my NYE cruise!!! It has sleeves, which are a must for me. But it's $98 and I will probably never wear it again :( I guess I'll wait for a sale or try to find something else.

Try this coupon code for $25.00 off. http://www.retailmenot.com/view/avenue.com

Oh, I just saw a better one on the Avenue website. AV12134 for 40% off!

    PS: Cute dress!
