  1. It was a no brainer to join the Gardens. Next door to the Gardens is the Center for the Arts. We plan to join that as well. And then there is the Nature Center. Yep, we're joining. Sue is excited about the possibility of taking some art classes at the Center for the Arts. She wants to get back into art in a big way. I want to get working on my next quilt. I've only had the fabric for a year.
  2. Good morning, everyone! Right now it is overcast and 32F but the sun is supposed to come out later and the temp is supposed to get into the 40s. That is good enough to take advantage of and we will find a place for a nice hike/walk. We may end up back at Dow Gardens because they do such a great job clearing the paths. I think today's meal would be good if done in a slow cooker, the oven, or the instant pot. The instant pot is for those late afternoons when you hit on pot roast as dinner for the day. The slow cooker and oven are for when you plan ahead. I think this one looks the best. It is really a dish for @Quartzsite Cruiser Lenda with all the carrots. https://www.lecremedelacrumb.com/instant-pot-pot-roast-potatoes/ This next one would create a wonderful aroma with the tomato paste, garlic, and worcestershire sauce along with the meat. https://kristineskitchenblog.com/instant-pot-pot-roast/ This next recipe comes from America's Test Kitchen. https://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/classic-pot-roast-and-potatoes/ Here is the Yorkshire pudding recipe. https://www.seriouseats.com/the-best-yorkshire-pudding-popover-recipe This last recipe has a touch of horseradish in it. That sounds really interesting to me. https://amindfullmom.com/instant-pot-pot-roast/ Wishing you all a wonderful day!
  3. Unfortunately, flights and hotels no longer show up on the online itinerary. Why HAL decided to take those out, I don't know. It made sense to have them there and it made it easy for their "valued guests" to find information.
  4. Thank you so much for sharing this! I laughed out loud at that one. @StLouisCruisers Yes, the snow went south. We were quite thankful. Our visit to Dow Gardens and the butterfly exhibit was delightful. I'm glad we got the annual membership last week when we did the canopy walk. We've already gotten our money's worth out of it. We decided that we are going to take advantage of as many activities and programs offered as we can. We don't want to just be sitting home in our recliners, not that we have recliners. We also got in a visit with Ellamary. She is proudly Irish so we took her a shamrock plant. She was thrilled and excited when we explained that we were adopting her.
  5. Good morning, everyone! Originally we were supposed to get 6-10 inches of fluffy stuff, but it turned out to be maybe an inch. It is already melting off the driveway. I have a Zoom meeting this morning and then we are going to the butterfly exhibit at Dow Gardens. We'll work in a visit with our adoptee, Ellamary. And also to our favorite store, Peel and Pare, for coffee. I am honored to be part of such a great group here on the Daily. @richwmn Rich, the originator, @StLouisCruisers for keeping it going in Rich's absence, @rafinmd Roy, who originated our care and celebration list, @JazzyV for taking over when Roy fell ill, @summer slope Dixie, who gives us the recipe for the day's drink, @cat shepard, Ann, who reviews the wine of the day and let's us know how much it will set us back, @grapau27 Graham, who often gives us an explanation of what the daily celebration really means, @0106 Tina, who has stepped in to do the Meal of the Day when I couldn't, @kazu Jacqui, who has also stepped up to the plate to make sure you were fed while I was away, and all those who contribute to the Daily with news and tidbits. We are all thankful that Dixie's kitty can be treated for the mass in the colon. We all cheered when @luvteaching Karen's DH came home yesterday. I heard the mass shouting of Hallelujah when @Cruzin Terri Terri's tilers showed up yesterday, although there was some communal grumbling when Wayfair did not show. We are happy that @smitty34877 Terry's DH can treat his condition and we all hope for the best for Tana and salute Terry and family for their unconditional caregiving. I know I could keep going, but all of you have come together to make this what it is. Posting a daily recipe is a small thing. @marshhawk Annie's stories of daily life have us all hooked. And, we love the memes that so many of you post. Thank you to all of you for making this the home we all have needed through the pandemic and beyond. Chili sure sounds good to me. I may save it for the next Farkle Friday. Last night we had a favorite from childhood, chicken liver casserole. It is kind of like a stroganoff with ground beef, chicken livers, mushrooms, sour cream, and noodles. You saute the chicken livers in sherry and that gives it a great flavor. I think we all have a "best" chili ever recipe. After all, that is why we keep making it! If you have a favorite, feel free to post it! I found three recipes that sound good and claim to be the best. The first one claims to be just like Mom used to make. https://www.thewholesomedish.com/the-best-classic-chili/ I've never put corn in my chili, but it looked good in this one. https://www.theseasonedmom.com/beef-chili-recipe/ When this one gave the direction to chop the vegetables, I held my breath. Fortunately, none of them were carrots. https://www.onceuponachef.com/recipes/classic-beef-chili.html I'm hoping this finds all of you doing well. Healing thoughts and warm wishes to those who are ailing and cheers to those who are celebrating. Wishing you all a wonderful day.
  6. Thank you so much! This looks pretty easy to do. How precious! Thank you for sharing! I'm sorry this isn't a happy time for you. We all wish we could wave our magic wands.
  7. I remember getting bitterballen from the Dive In on the old Rotterdam back in 2019, pre pandemic. I haven't been on a ship that doesn't have the Grand Dutch Cafe lately, so I haven't checked. I was surprised when I saw that I could get bitterballen there. So the answer is maybe.
  8. Good morning, everyone! A big salute to all of our caretakers here on the Daily. It seems most of us are at that point in life where we have all been or are caretakers. I was caretaker to both my parents in their final illnesses and considered it an honor. We're still not sure how much snow we'll get today. I guess we'll know when it comes. We have been downgraded from a warning to an advisory, so I look at that as a good development. I have my exercise class this morning and a haircut this afternoon. Then, Farkle Friday! Today's meal was a tough one. I only found one recipe that was on numerous sites. Well, the ingredients were listed on many sites, but not the directions. It can be found on Epicurious and Bon Appetit, but they both want money from me to see the directions. I get a big message that says Kitchen Closed when I go to those sites. A yellowtail may be any of several different species of fish. Most commonly the yellowtail amberjack Seriola lalandi is meant. In the context of sushi, yellowtail usually refers to the Japanese amberjack, Glass noodles are also called cellophane noodles. https://www.thespruceeats.com/what-are-glass-noodles-4800942 Here is the ingredient list for the dish. I think I could figure out how to make it without the directions. Maybe someone has a subscription to one of the sites that has those directions. https://www.punchfork.com/recipe/Yellowtail-with-Glass-Noodles-and-Pear-Bon-Appetit Here is a yellowtail noodle salad. You could substitute the glass noodles for the rice noodles and add some pear to it. https://wildplanetfoods.com/blogs/recipes/yellowtail-rice-noodle-salad And here is a glass noodle salad with vegetables and tuna. Tuna is not the same as yellowtail, but you could use the yellowtail in this salad in place of the tuna. Or, just go with the tuna. It may be easier to find. https://eatsmarter.com/recipes/glass-noodle-salad-with-vegetables-and-tuna-fish This last recipe isn't even close to the Meal of the Day, but it looked good to me and you could make this with your favorite variety of fish. https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/fresh-yellowtail-fillet-with-lime-and-ginger-recipe-1923833 I can see draping some of those glass noodles over the dish above, can't you? Healing thoughts and hugs to all those who are suffering from a medical malady. Let's hope @smitty34877 Terry gets some good news about her DH's health woes. @lazey1 and @mamaofami hope both of you are feeling better soon. Wishes for @luvteaching's DH to successfully transfer home and wishing comfort for Tana. It goes without saying that we want @rafinmd Roy and @kazu Jacqui to continue their recovery. Let's also celebrate @Cruzin Terri's tilers coming out today! And, Wayfair is coming to put together the TV table. If I left someone out it is because I'm still on the first cup of coffee. It wasn't on purpose. Wishing you all a wonderful day.
  9. Good news, Carolyn! It takes time, but you'll do it. And the experience of Maxine @AncientWanderer is great to know. I know you are resting a bit easier and I'm happy.
  10. Well, Glory be! It is about time! I wish that was all we were getting. One forecast says 4 inches, another says 6-10 inches, another says 4-6 inches. I guess we'll find out when it falls tomorrow afternoon and evening. When I was living in Ohio an item I ordered went from St. Louis, Missouri to some obscure place out west, then to Olathe, Kansas, then to Grove City, Ohio, then to Michigan, then to Toledo and finally to my front porch. I think I could have gone and picked it up quicker. I really like the old stuff we have. I have Grandma's china, Mom's Waterford crystal, Grandma's gate leg table, Grandma's Belleek, and Grandma's silver. No one else wanted any of this stuff, saying what would they do with it. I can't help but think Grandma and Mom would be thrilled that these things are being used and cherished. Keeping my fingers crossed for you, Carolyn, that the nephrologist can give you a treatment plan that will help your kidneys. I think it is a good thing that Henry will be with you on the way there and on the way home. @Seasick Sailor I am sorry to hear of the passing of your neighbor. She sounds like a remarkable woman and reminds me of a friend I taught with. My friend made all the arrangements for her funeral including setting up babysitters for the littlest grandchildren. The trip to the store with DB was interesting. He refuses to consider using a cane so I had to drop him off at the door and go park. Then, I found him in the store, collected the walker from the basket of the Amigo and took it out to the car. I got my groceries and put them in the car and went back in with the walker and my cart. I collected his groceries as they were bagged and left him with the walker while he paid. I told him to wait at the door for me and I went out and loaded his groceries in the car, put the cart where it belonged and then went to pick him up. When we got to his apartment building I gave him his walker while I went and got the cart from the lobby and then loaded his groceries on it. I walked the cart back up to the door where he insisted he could manage the cart and the walker the rest of the way. No sense arguing with him. It may have taken him an hour to get to his apartment. I hope he didn't have any frozen food.
  11. Good morning, everyone! We had a dusting of snow fall overnight here in mid-Michigan. We're still waiting for a definitive forecast for tomorrow. One says 6-10 inches and another says 2-6 inches. I won't be rescuing any cats due to allergies, but can celebrate Old Stuff Day. I have many things that have been handed down in the family. I recently gave my goddaughter, Elizabeth, a glass cake plate that has belonged in the family since 1850 or there about. We also have Grandma's needlepoint chair. She did the needlepoint for the seat and the back of the chair. We had those panels cleaned and we are having the rest of the chair recovered and chose a beautiful light blue to match the blue in some of the flowers on the needlepoint sections. I remember when Grandma did those. I think I was late high school or early college then. The chair was old then and it has been 50 years. Books are celebrated every day in this house. Not much on the agenda today. I'm going to the gym today to do the weight machines and then I'm taking DB to the grocery store. He feels he's turned a corner with the knee and can get through the store with an amigo motorized cart. This should be interesting. Today's meal reminded me of @smitty34877 Terry and her household. It would be a good one for the vegetarians. You could make two small ones, one with meat and one without. Most of the recipes use lentils in place of the meat, but you could use the plant based meat substitutes like Beyond Meat. Here's one that uses lentils. https://minimalistbaker.com/1-hour-vegan-shepherds-pie/ This next one uses lentils and mushrooms to substitute for the meat. Lentils are popular because they are high in protein and pack a nutritional punch. Mushrooms are just plain good. It is topped with garlic mashed potatoes. I love anything with garlic. https://jessicainthekitchen.com/vegan-shepherds-pie-gluten-free/ This one uses a combination of lentils, quinoa, and vegetables covered with mashed sweet potatoes. https://www.simplyquinoa.com/vegan-shepherds-pie/ The last recipe does not use a grain, only mushrooms. It uses frozen vegetables and does the top of the stove work in a cast iron skillet. That can be topped with the potatoes and put directly into the oven to minimalize cleanup and make it oh, so easy! https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/food-network-kitchen/vegan-shepherds-pie-9858813 Healing thoughts and hugs to those who need them and cheers to those who are celebrating! Wishing you all a wonderful day.
  12. Sandi, I am so sorry to hear of your DB's diagnosis. A good family friend had pulmonary fibrosis and because she was over 70 was not eligible for a lung transplant. Hugs to you, your DB, and DB's family. It is a difficult road ahead and I hope that the doctors can make it as smooth as possible. It is sometimes difficult to determine quality vs quantity and I'm hoping that the time he has is all quality. I'm glad to hear that your tests turned out well. We need those good events to bolster all of us! @Quartzsite Cruiser Lenda, I'm pleased to read that your DH's surgeon was happy with his progress.
  13. Rabbit, Rabbit, White Rabbit! Good morning, everyone! It will be a bit warmer here in mid-Michigan today, but nothing to get too excited about. I will change the red heart on the front door for the green shamrock. I'm going to exercise class this morning after I shovel out the barricade at the end of the driveway left by the city plows. @aliaschief I hope your day is terrific! Our first recipe today looks easy and delicious! https://www.aheadofthyme.com/glazed-honey-balsamic-pork-chops/ The next recipe looks just as good and has a different seasoning in the glaze. I like the idea of the green onions. https://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/pork-chops-with-honey-balsamic-glaze/ In this recipe a little Dijon mustard is used. I would think it would be good to help balance the sweetness of the honey and balsamic. https://whatsinthepan.com/honey-balsamic-pork-chops/ Time to get to work on the end of the driveway. Wishing you all a wonderful day.
  14. Good afternoon! The sun is out and it is 40F here, so some of yesterday's snow is melting. That is a good thing. If we get more, there is no place to put it. Here is the dining table with all the matching chairs. Grandma's old kitchen chairs have now been retired.
  15. Good morning, everyone! Yesterday the weather forecast was wrong. They told us Sunday night that they didn't think yesterday's snowfall would amount to much. Well, it came in and quickly dumped 6 inches of the fluffy stuff. Visibility was near 0. I got up and went to the early exercise class yesterday so I would be home when the storm hit and I was very glad I did. I was snug and warm and inside with no need to go out. I was up at 1:00 am as well. I tried to get back to sleep, but at 2:00 am was still wide awake. I knew I just needed to relax a bit and settle down my back, so some Aspercreme helped do that and I was able to get back to sleep. Maybe I was excited because....... Today they are finally delivering the additional 4 chairs for our new dining table. They've only been on order since October. I am excited! The table will look so much better with the chairs all matching. Now, I just have to get Chris out here to install the light fixture. Today's meal would have been super good last night while hunkered down in front of the fireplace. This first recipe not only looks good, but one serving only has 17.6 g of carbohydrate. Even I could have that. https://www.aheadofthyme.com/cheesy-tortellini-and-sausage-bake/ It is hard to resist that cheesy goodness. This next recipe has twice the calories and twice the carbs, but I'm sure it is worth it. It tops the tortellini and sausage mixture with ricotta, so it is similar to a lasagna. https://balancewithjess.com/tortellini-and-sausage-bake/ This recipe is simple and incredibly easy. You can whip this up quickly for dinner on a busy day. https://thissillygirlskitchen.com/italian-sausage-tortellini-bake/ Carbs make this next one a no no for me, but it sure sounds good and it adds in some spinach so you do get a vegetable. https://www.chewoutloud.com/20-minute-skillet-tuscan-tortellini/ You can make this vegetarian by leaving out the sausage and filling it up with vegetables. I hope one of these appeals. Warm thoughts, virtual hugs, and healing energy sent to those who need it. Cheers to those who are celebrating. I know I am! My chairs are coming! Wishing you all a wonderful day.
  16. @Safety Squirrel Welcome to the Daily and thank you so much for the pictures of the whale and polar bears. I hope you'll keep coming back. @Petunia1950 Thanks for stopping in today. Hope to see more of you!
  17. We had the port side aft wrap on deck 8 of the Nieuw Amsterdam in 2021 for an Alaskan cruise. There was no problem with noise and I didn't notice cigarette smoke coming down. It might be more prevalent if the weather is good. We loved that cabin and would book it again.
  18. I did make it home before the storm started. I think this one is as bad as last week was. So far all we've gotten is snow and for that I am thankful. But, I will have to wait for the plow guy to get out tomorrow. I wasn't planning on going anywhere early tomorrow. We are supposed to have the 4 additional chairs for our dining table delivered tomorrow morning. Katie, you came to the right place. Thank you for putting your trust in us to share your grief and give you support and comfort. You did the right thing for Jerry. I hope the comfort and support we can give you helps you heal.
  19. Good morning, everyone! Mid-Michigan is in for some more snow and mixed precipitation today. It is supposed to start around noon. That gives me time to go to exercise class and get home. And that is all that is planned for today. The meatball sub sounds good but I'd probably prefer it without the bun. Too much bread for me. This one looked the best to me. https://thecuriousplate.com/french-onion-meatball-subs/ Lots of good onions here! I'd probably cook them a little more until they were a more golden brown color. https://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/saucy-onion-meatball-subs/ The Gruyere cheese made this one sound good. https://dempsters.ca/recipes/savoury-french-onion-and-gruyere-meatball-subs I hope one of these sounds good to you! Wishing you all a wonderful day. Healing thoughts and hugs to those who need them and cheers to those who are celebrating!
  20. We had a beautiful day here in mid-Michigan. We went out to Dow Gardens and bought annual passes. Those passes also get you into Whiting Forest and the Canopy Walk. So, we went there. It was a fantastic time as there were no crowds. The sunshine felt warm and I'm sure we got our vitamin D. We've decided to adopt Ellamary, the dentist's widow. We grew up with her kids and they were part of the neighborhood posse.
  21. Good morning, everyone! If anyone does not want their pistachios, I will gladly take them. We seized the day yesterday and went to visit an old family friend yesterday. Her husband was our family dentist and he hired my sister as a hygienist when she graduated. Sue still maintains that he was the best boss she ever had. He passed away a while back and his son took over the practice. Kevin is now retired and is our neighbor. He said his mom was in assisted living and we decided to go visit her. I guess she doesn't get that many visitors, so we'll keep going back. We had a wonderful time talking to her and she was so excited to know that we had come just to see her. @Cruzin Terri Sorry to hear about continued bathroom woes. When it rains, it pours and you seem to have a permanent thundercloud overhead. @kazu So glad you got out to visit friends last night. Social connections are so important, especially as we age. That is one reason why this community was so important during the pandemic. A special thank you for all who make this happen on a daily basis. We never know how much we may touch another life for the better, but given the comments the last couple of days, I think we reach far more than we know. Let's continue to spread the warmth, comfort, and support. Today's meal sounds pretty interesting. I will probably pass on it due to the carb load. It would put me right to sleep! Hmm, maybe that is the answer for the 3:00 am club! Can't sleep, have some carbs. The butternut squash is added to the cheese mixture and provides some additional nutrients as well as depth of flavor. The differences in recipes are found in seasonings and type of cheese used. This first recipe uses whole wheat pasta and three types of cheese. It isn't too bad on the calories and just slightly over my carb limit. https://www.skinnytaste.com/butternut-squash-mac-and-cheese/ This next one is heavy on the cheddar cheese and uses cream cheese in the recipe. It is a bit higher in calories and carbs, but flavor can make that worth it. https://cookieandkate.com/butternut-squash-mac-and-cheese/ This last recipe uses aged white cheddar cheese and tops the casserole with some whole wheat bread crumbs for a satisfying crunch. https://www.twopeasandtheirpod.com/butternut-squash-mac-and-cheese/ Wishing you all a wonderful day! Healing thoughts and hugs to those who need them and cheers to those who are celebrating!
  22. @arzz Welcome to the Daily. I'm glad all those recipes gave you something to look forward to when your kitchen was finished. I remember going through a partial remodel in my old house and it was a month before I could cook again. I do admire you for moving during Covid. That must have been very difficult. I have a GE side by side. It is a lot smaller than the Hisense I left behind in Ohio. That one did have the freezer drawer at the bottom, but it did stay open on its own and was fairly easy for me to find things in. The one I hated was the bottom freezer with the door that swung open and then came back and bopped me. I did have to get way down to find what I wanted there. Sometimes I feel there just isn't enough room in the current fridge although we managed Thanksgiving and Christmas without having to store food in the garage.
