  1. QA H430. 2024 3rd Dec Black & White 11th Dec Masquerade 13th Dec Roaring 20s
  2. I am sure you can buy flights after initial booking. They would probably be cheaper with Cunard and include the transfer, as many one way flights can be expensive.
  3. We have used Cunard Air many times, for varying locations around the world. Their fares are excellent for upgrades (compared to Viking and other lines)! In the past we have been given flights on Virgin, BA, American and Delta, possibly others but cannot be sure. if making your own itinerary you can select times and airline of preference, just give them the info they need. If using BA, it is not possible to request seats at time of booking. They are one of the few airlines where you need a booking reference to go into the site, and pay extra for booking a seat, even in business class! Without doubt, Southampton Harbour Hotel is one of the best places to stay in the city. Ennios is also worth a look at the website. These are two very different establishments. I hope you book and have a wonderful trip.
  4. If you are booked in QG, you automatically will be allocated first boarding. This is generally between 12.30 & 1.00pm. On arriving at the terminal there is a separate area for Grills guests after check-in, and you will be called for security and boarding in the first tranche. enjoynthe QG experience.
  5. Veey recently (24th Nov) we arrived bang on our allotted time, 12.30pm, and were ushered straight through to check-in and onto ship withouyt any waiting. There was already a queue outside of the terminal, of those refused immediate entry. Some had been allowed inside to wait: one can presume how this works. Would you be able to wait in the hotel lobby for perhaps another 30minutes? Waiting on the dockside in December would be no great fun. I think we have to accept Cunard and other lines are becoming more pro-ctive in monitoring boarding times, but they have yet to fine tune the process. It does not help that some of the staff at the terminal, do not all "sing to the same tune"! Have a lovely cruise.
  6. I was on the same cruise and totally agree.
  7. You will get a medallion on Princess (certainly of this year) as you will show this to bar staff etc, that can be kept for your collection. We were impressed with the technology on board.
  8. Last night’s “Roaring 20s” formal evening had glitz and gowns in profusion! I would think at least 60% of the ladies made some kind of effort towards the theme, from simple long strings of pearls and a few feathers to flapper dresses or the truly elegant formal wear. A few men were in flat hats, red braces and even spats, but most just with evening black tie outfit. People seemed to be enjoying the occasion and the theatre production was a Christmas show, that added to the atmosphere. This morning was bright and breezy and a walk around deck 3 was certainly enough to blow any cobwebs away and the woolly hat made an appearance for the second time! So now we have to pack, and dream on until the next cruise. I will admit that this is my favourite ship of the 3. There are so many crew we are always delighted to see again, and the service has been exemplary as always. A few observations and what I would like to see on QA. I know this has been aired before and there is always debate on this subject but nothing stands still. I do so hope the stateroom entry system is upgraded, rather than fiddling with the slide in keycard. Wi-fi enabled or click release on approach would be wonderful. I am sure I have read that all Grills areas will have regulated access, which I am in favour of, but the keycard system in the lifts needs radical updating that modern technology is capable of. Over the past few days it has often taken at least 3 attempts to get the higher buttons to register. I find this rather discomforting while others watch or even ask what we are doing. I would love to see Cunard commission a smaller ship, to be able to enter ports away from the modern mega ships, but I am sure that is just too much to expect. As it is I am happy to wait with anticipation for our first trip on QA. Thank you for those who have taken the trouble to read this blog, and it is not too late if you wish to ask me any questions, before our early arrival in cold Southampton. A Merry Christmas to all and happy cruising in 2024!
  9. Some more news from the QV, and we really know we are on our way home with the temperatures dropping! We did go to the officer’s party in the Queens Room early last evening. It was not overly crowded and unlike BigMac found wine, fizz, G&Ts and cocktails in abundance. The hot canapés were delicious and also plentiful. It was a chance to get to chat with folk we had not come across before, and we honestly enjoyed ourselves. Will be chatting later with BigMac! The theatre performance was a 60s tribute band, and they were good. It was nice to see a near packed house. They will be performing in the Queens Room for the farewell bash! Last night the ocean had some attitude and at noon the wave swell was 4.5m: the little “white bags” were in evidence and strategically placed in the public areas. This morning’s turn around the prom, was more of a challenge in the wind and only a few hardy souls outside. The steamers were devoid of padded cushions, and everything on the upper decks lashed down. Sadly for me, both pools were netted, so I think I have had my last swim for this trip. As I write, it is much calmer and mostly blue sky. I noticed that the proverbial “pop up stalls” on deck 3 were selling silly hats for our Roaring 20s evening: I guess another money spinner. The previous 2 formal evenings saw classy participation, and I do so hope that will be the same for this evening. After dinner, before the Christmas show, perhaps I will go for a spot of people watching 👀! I will report tomorrow. There have been some interesting “amuse bouches” which made for a nice photo.
  10. The night before last, it was just entertainment by the singing duo in the Queens Room, which was highly appreciated and the venue packed. There may have been ballroom dancing later on, but as I posted, dancing was in the Yacht Club. Last night it was Latin and other ballroom dances in the QR.
  11. Our journey northwards continues at a leisurely pace, and think I saw FO’s Balmoral going south on the starboard side not so long ago. It is still warm with people in costumes sunbathing on the open decks: how we are going to miss this in a few days time! Yet another early morning swim, and for the first time I had to share the aft pool after breakfast on the balcony. The Pavilion pool had been empty and netted for the previous 36 hours, but it is open again and being used. Our first inkling of going back to reality arrived today with the case departure tags being left in the letter holders. For some reason we have been given the earliest departure, rather than being asked what would be a convenient time. So it looks as if we will get the tail end of Southampton rush hour when leaving the CPS site. Late this afternoon we have an invite to the Captain’s and senior officers party, at the strange time of 5.15. Not sure who gets on this list but if it is not a shoulder to shoulder squash, we will attend in the Queens Room. With the mention of that venue, last night the Latin Dance was sparsely attended (but enjoyed by those there) considering this is an almost capacity sailing. What a difference to the night before. For many hours we have watched the ocean, but we have not once seen anything other than a few birds. Some were talking in the restaurant the other day and said porpoises had been seen. It seems the sea swell will increase a little later today and maybe hit 3m in the Bay of Biscay, so nothing dramatic expected. For now we continue with this winter idyll, and will do the same again next year on the Queen Anne.
  12. We have had the most splendid, sunny day in Madeira. After lunch we had to refrain from the balcony as it was just too hot, but no complaints as there is always a shady spot to be found on the terraces. Funchal is a great cruise stop, as not only is it an attractive port, but the island is so lush and interesting especially if one is a keen gardener. Once we leave here, we are heading back to Southampton: Captain Tomas Connery has informed us we should have another warm day tomorrow, 20 degrees +, and making a speed averaging 16 knots. We departed at 6.00pm, just as the Funchal Christmas lights came on. If it had been a little darker, the show would have been better. Last night the Queen’s Room was heaving and alive with an Irish duo. Seats had been placed on the dance floor and extra seats on the side. As I walked through it was refreshing to see this space fully utilised, and the bar staff truly busy. There was dancing in the Yacht Club for those who have “twinkle toes”. Tonight I am sure the purists will be happy to have the “Ballroom Blitz “ evening back in the deck 2 Queens Room venue. A few small snippets of info, that some might be interested in! There are probably no more than 20 under 18’s on this trip, some of which are babies. The QV, considering her age, is still looking good: (not sure when her next refit is). For those who might be reading this, and have not been on QV before, you have a lot to look forward to! I am happy to answer any questions if I can.
  13. We have had a beautiful day on this charming Atlantic outcrop. Awaking to a fabulous blue sky and temperatures you can only dream of, back in the UK, and most likely much of Northern America. It was our usual routine of having breakfast delivered and then off to the pool for my daily swim. Many were taking their fayre on the open deck aft of the lido. The dampness of the overnight rain rapidly evaporated and all was set for another perfect day. There was a shuttle bus to the port gates but most took the flat walk there and onwards to the little town of La Palma. How pleasant it was to be on the seafront in short sleeves, and if you wished to partake in a little refreshment, there were many cafes and bistros to choose from. After the ambulance departed from the dockside, we left for Madeira about 50 minutes late, and will be making headway at about 18knots. Slightly cooler tomorrow, but then we will be further north. Funchal is another place I am always pleased to visit, even if it is just to admire the flora! It is going to be hard adjusting to the colder weather when we head for Southampton, but we are very comfortable onboard on sea days. I do so hope that an excellent speaker will have embarked to enlighten us on some special subject. And now, after G&T’s on the balcony, we can look forward to another gorgeous dinner!
  14. Last night leaving Lanzarote was the most beautiful evening we could ask for at this time of year: warm with a spectacular moon. I wandered up to deck 9 after dinner and the deck party was being enjoyed by all ages. This morning we arrived in Santa Cruz, and for those of us with balconies on the starboard side, certainly have the short straw. It was very warm, just a little sun (even though the BBC weatherman promised more) and to our port the Costa Firenze and Aida Stella were also visiting. After breakfast yet another lonesome swim, which is just so pleasant! I did leave the ship and the port buildings are clean and modern. However, I fear that those with any mobility issues may have been surprised by the distance to just leave the secure area. By 4.00 o’clock the clouds could not hold their content any longer, and it is now pouring which I fear may have set in for the rest of the day. The jungle drums have not reached our ears as to whether those left behind in Arricife have rejoined the QV. It has been a topic of conversation onboard, and have not heard anyone who felt any sympathy for those involved. It St Andrew’s day (Scotland) and the menu tonight is themed for the occasion in many dishes. I have to say, the offerings make for a difficult choice, but food is a subjective topic. There are many who post about the quality of food, but being back on Cunard really puts things into perspective and dining has been wonderful! For tomorrow it is La Palma, and we hope the sun will shine again. I find this such a charming port of call, especially at this time of year.
  15. Missed the ship! The Captain said they could catch an inter-island ferry to Tenerife.
  16. Back to the actual thread topic, we have just left Lanzarote after witnessing another amazing sunset. Three passengers were left behind. It is so mild there is going to be a late deck party tonight, but we shall not be present.
  17. This morning we awoke to find wall to wall sunshine and we were already alongside in Arrecife! On the jetty an ambulance was waiting: a sad end to someone’s holiday. We are sharing the port with the Costa Firenze. Another calm night had passed and it has been difficult to believe we have been traversing the Atlantic Ocean. These rocky outcrop islands although barren have a charm on a fine day. The black soil and the distant black hills and mountains are eerily haunting. In the marina there were some serious ocean-going yachts, which are a spectacle to see. Around this fairly new area (which is very clean) a few shops and cafes ply for trade from those who do not wish to venture far. There were certainly early morning tours leaving for sights further afield. In the past I have been quite outspoken of the dire internet reception in the rooms. This voyage is our first since the new Starlink service has been in place, and very impressed indeed: no more sitting on the stairs midships in hopes of finding a connection. This is a very good cruise to be on as we hear of the chill in the UK, while we can happily stroll, swim or take the sun with the need of sun protection cream! I think there might be a few persons who will have a rather “lobsteresque” appearance tonight; the sun beds are in heavy demand.
  18. After our slightly delayed departure last night, I took the attached photo as I am it sure I have never left Lisbon after sundown: it looked so beautiful. The sea is still calm, although on the higher decks it feels breezy. Occasionally the sun will make a brief appearance raising the temperature, but Captain Tomas Connery did mention that the sun should be with us tomorrow in Lanzarote. To date all our meals have been perfect. Luckily for us we have the same superb wait staff that we had this time last year, and it is good to see familiar faces around the restaurant, and indeed the ship. Whilst on the subject of staff I have to say that our butler duo, Romil and Jose, are some of the best we have ever had (other lines included). The passengers seem very content on this cruise. Often one can be in the lifts and hear the grumbles of others, but not so far. I am sure many would be even happier if they could lie in the sun all day! Tonight is the red and gold evening and I will be participating. We have ordered beef wellington, one of my husband’s favourite dishes. The presentation in the theatre is “One Way or Another”, so will probably finish off this Tuesday there. So, it seems for me, another good day of food, friendship, swimming and just for being at sea!
  19. This morning we arrived in Lisbon which was bathed in early morning sun! After a very pleasant breakfast in our room it was up to the pool for a 35 minute swim. Sadly the sun did not last but it has been warm and dry. This city is lovely to be in anytime of year, and a walk of around 4 miles always reveals something new: the Alfama district is so quaint! I did manage a purchase of some very nice white port before returning. QV departed on time and was about to turn in the river, when the Captain announced we were to go alongside again for a sick crew member to disembark. Big Mac has beaten me with this hot news! 😊 Our second departure was in the dark and it seemed not too many stayed out on the open deck for the spectacle of sailing under the “singing bridge”. We thought a glass of bubbles on the balcony would suffice tonight and we still enjoyed the sights on the edge of the Tagus and the bridge. Yet again Cunard has Berni Flint in the theatre for Showtime tonight. He once was a winner on “Opportunity Knocks”, so that will give some of you an idea of how long he has been around. On this subject, the Entertainment Director is Ashley Clay. A day at sea tomorrow, on our way to Lanzarote, and believe the temperature will be on the up!
  20. Also on starboard side and enjoyed this! Just cannot believe how calm the sea is.
  21. Our journey across the BoB was totally uneventful; no marine life to see just a few merchant ships. My afternoon trip to the spa was expensive and I refused to tip on top of the already added gratuity or buy any products which I was constantly told would improve everything about my skin, but I am beyond that! I will not be going again as this upsell totally spoils a visit. The B & W evening, as already mentioned, was lovely. We also had an invitation for the party in the Queens Room (and we did not go in smart attire as said thereupon). Before going to dinner we walked past to see it was heaving but it was nice to see how well dressed everyone was. At dinner my Dover sole was very tasty and my husband’s chateaubriand cooked to perfection. This is another calm sea day before Lisbon tomorrow. So far the speakers have appeared underwhelming and have not bothered going to listen. The diplomat giving a history lecture on Portugal, I am sure we have heard before. Today our genteel cruising is interrupted by my significant birthday! We have ordered off menu for a meal tonight and could not wish to celebrate in style anywhere else. To mark this occasion I will go for a swim this afternoon. I usually do this everyday from Southampton, but the cold beat me this time. Our turn around the prom this morning saw the steamers in use and many folk enjoying a stroll as the temperature is now a balmy 18 degrees. The ship is looking lovely with Christmas decorations, they are the same as other years, but who cares? It is good to see other passengers posting on this thread, as it really corroborates what I am writing. Everyone seems to be happy and best of all the ship does not seem crowded, although most are indoors, on what is a very full sailing! With that, I can confirm we are certainly enjoying ourselves and the crew are wonderful as ever.
  22. Last night the ship was very quiet and little atmosphere in the atrium. The harpist played to herself. I noticed the average of the pax is very high although there are a few children onboard who are revelling in the Christmas decorations. The sea has been incredibly calm since we left and during the night was like glass and bathed in moonlight. So far today it has been grey but getting noticeably warmer, so I feel that there is a strong possiblilty I will take a dip in the pool late afternoon, which I should have to myself: the air temperature is currently 14 degrees. Walking the promenade deck earlier on, was refreshing but so few outside. Later I am going to the spa, but I really hate the hard sell which now happens on booking, and not just after treatments when they try and load you off with creams and potients! It takes the edge of what should be a serene and relaxing experience. Black & White is the theme for tonight and there are WC parties for platinum and diamond members which gives one an idea of how top heavy the system is. I think we shall pass on this, but have another delicious meal to anticipate. Maybe it will be another viewing of the musical “ Be Our Guest”. I was not too impressed with the singer last night Tesni Jones who apparently has been winner of Sing for Wales and appeared The Voice, but we all have different preferences. Perhaps we were all just too tired for the late performance to be appreciated! A rather boring photo, but this shows how calm the BoB is. At least we are not suffering the same fate as a Saga ship a few weeks ago.
  23. It has been a year since sailing with Cunard, our last in November/December ‘22 to the same destination on this ship. Since then we have sailed with 2 other lines in the Pacific and Europe and enjoyed long distance travel. How pleasant to be back in familiar surroundings of QV. From reading CC over the past few days, it appears that there are quite a few active members seeking some sun joining me on this voyage. I have written blogs before and always try to convey the atmosphere on the ship to anyone interested enough to read this. We arrived about 10 minutes prior to the time on our boarding papers, straight into the Mayflower Terminal, checked in and onto ship without having to sit and wait. A warning to those who arrive very early: it was perishingly cold on the dock side, and there was a queue for those not admitted into the terminal! The checking of boarding passes was greater than we have encountered before. So QV is due to depart around 6.00pm on this clear moonlit evening and we are just off to the Commodore Club. I doubt whether there will be many hardy souls out on the open deck for sailaway drinks.
