I'd think that it's possible they would have conflicts on certain dates.  It would be very lucky if all itineraries could change.

I don't know whether my cruise planner is correct or the main RCCL booking page itinerary.  One reflects the addition of GB and elimination of Skagway, the other (planner) reflects original itinerary.

  2. I have a May 29, 2020 northbound Radiance sailing booked and it is still showing Skagway and not Glacier Bay in my cruise planner.   Wonder if they are still adjusting schedules or some will not change. On the RC main page (to book a cruise ), it shows GB as replacing Skagway and still includes Hubbard Glacier at the end of the cruise for that sail date.  Now there are two sea days/glacier viewing days.   The excursions I have booked for Skagway are still in my cruise planner.

We are on the Ovation May 29th sailing from Seattle and the excursion is actually on May 31, not June like I originally thought.  Could you direct me to the pictures (his or yours)?  I'm new to CC and still learning how to navigate.  Even if there aren't as many bears, I'm sure the excursion will be just as great.  But I will be devastated if we don't see any!

Hi! Just got home from work.  If you email me at:    mdteachergirl39 at gmail dot com,   I can send you the links.   Cc won’t let me post them here.

Thank you SO much for the information. I'm so glad I found someone who has done it.  I just hope we see bears in May...I think we are in Juneau on June 3rd so hopefully some will be out.  As an amateur wildlife photographer, I figured this excursion was a must! Thank you again.

Toeknee498, are you on the Radiance May 29th sailing from Vancouver?  Or Ovation?  I booked it again for Juneau for June 2nd, 2020, so you must be on a different ship.  I am thinking we may not see as many bears in May, but I just saw a review from someone who did this exact excursion on Ovation of the Seas last week, and he posted bear pictures!  I have pictures on my cruise excursions page, but not here on cc.

Did you go on this excursion?  We are looking at it for our May 2020 Alaskan cruise but can't find much information about it other than on the RCCL website.

We did this excursion in August 2017.  It was probably the best excursion I've ever done (or maybe tied with  Calabaza Sailing in Barbados sea turtle snorkel..  We are doing it again this year in August with 10 family and friends, and I just booked it again for our late May, 2020, Radiance sailing with my daughter.  I know we may see fewer bears in late May/1st June than August because the salmon aren't running.  But, back to the excursion... we were outfitted with boots at the outfitters office (and had to tell our weight privately). It was a short float plane ride from the airport.  We landed in water  (shallow) and waded to shore.  We walked maybe 1/4 of a mile along a  trail after receiving very detailed bear safety instructions, and watched bears catching/eating salmon in a waterfall.  We saw several mama bears walk by with cubs right in front of us, and one of the cubs stood up on hind legs to get a better look at us.  Probably less than 20 feet away!   On the way out, we walked past a mama bear nursing her two cubs.  I asked the guide if the bears mind humans out there.  He said they tolerate it, because the salmon is more important to consume than worry about humans.  They  guides are very careful to keep a respectful distance between us and the bears.  It was probably the single largest reason I can't wait to go back to Alaska.  I know it's pricey, but it's incredible!  The planes are part of Ward Aviation in Juneau  (look at their website)  and the bear part is guided by Bear Creek Outfitters - at least it was last year.

Thank you for all of these links.  Did I miss your review?  Maybe it's still in progress.  I need to go re-read your first Alaska trip report, because it's just THAT fantastic!!!  Happy New Year to you both.  :)

My goof!:classic_wacko:. The 4th we were in Fairbanks, took the train the 5th to Denali.  6th in Denali, 7th Denali to Anchorage, 8th to the boat.

We booked the train and the Princess Denali Lodge through AT&T.   Would have booked both independent but the Gold Star service and the lodge showed no availability.  AT&T has or gets access to the "hidden" blocks of rooms and seats.  When I first contacted them they said they would need to confirm availability and we were plenty early.  A couple of days later all was good.  They had a good cancellation policy also.  We didn't like the lodging options they had on either end.  They acknowledged they were working on boosting that part of their offerings.

Train was about 4 or so hours on the 5th and almost 8 on the 7th.

On the 8th in the morning we had breakfast and messed around, got picked up at 1230 pm headed to Whittier via the 2 hr stop at the wildlife center, arriving around 430 pm at the boat.

Hope that helps fellow Texan!!!  (We're in DFW area!)

Hi!  I am not a fellow Texas (but I did live just north of San Antonio for three wonderful years!).  When you say you booked through AT&T, do you mean the cell phone provider?  If yes, I did not realize they had a travel department.  I would assume this is if you have a contract with them?  Or, is it a different AT&T agency?  Thank you so much!  We will be there in August, and can't wait.

  8. A single stop is permitted at an extra $5 charge (but time limited to 10 minutes, $1 per minute extra). Booze is only sold through the provincial liquor stores and a limited set of private liquor stores (even wine and beer), none of which are big on selling water by the case that I can think of.

You would likely find it easier all around to just stop for water - which is heavy - but then after dropping your suitcases and water at the pier, simply walk to the nearest BC Liquor store - a touch over 400 yards - to pick up your wine, which needs to be taken through as carry on anyway.

Depending on the route the cabbie takes - fixed rate means they'll most definitely use whichever street is fastest as there's no extra cash in it for them to dilly-dally! - you will pass one or more major super markets (Save On Foods, Safeway, IGA, Nester's Market, Buy Low, No Frills, Whole Foods are most of the bigger ones) so simply ask him to stop at whichever major supermarket he is going to pass.

Alternatively you could split up - one person go grab wine, another water, at the same stop. e.g the BC LIquor Store at 2935 Cambie Street is right across the street from Save On and a block up on the same side to Whole Foods. The problem with this is that under the fixed zone fare rules you cannot demand the cabbie take a particular route... so they may refuse if they know that there is construction on Cambie, and give you the choice of a metered fare or not stopping there.

Please allow me to piggyback a bit since this thread is about alcohol in Vancouver. Martincath, I know you were such a great help to Anita Latte and I followed that trip report closely. You are a local, and I would like to ask for your help. We will have 24 hours in Vancouver post cruise NEXT August. We will be staying somewhere between the cruise port and the Amtrak Station - to be decided in next few weeks. :) Do you know if I can find Havana Club 7 Rum anywhere in Vancouver? We bought some in Cuba, and gave most away as gifts before we realized how good it was. It is not imported into USA due to embargo restrictions. We will eventually go on another cruise to Cuba, but not until after Alaska. Have you seen it anywhere? I would be happy to take taxi or uber to a shop. Thank you so much for any info you may provide - all of you on this Canada board are amazing.

Edited to add. I think I found it! What I needed was the name of BC liquor store. Found some at a shop on Robson that says 1.5km from Canada Place.

  9. For those looking for episodes of Northern Exposure I bet you can get box sets on Amazon. I have the first season at home on the soon to be antiquated DVD, which was once available for purchase at Best Buy.

One of our stops today, Talkeetna, is the town that Roslyn was based upon.

My alarm just went off. It’s shower time.

You can also often get them (or request them) free at your local library. I just watched Season 1 and 2.

  10. We have cruised from Galveston more than a dozen times (we can drive there). Fly in a day or 2 ahead. Do not rent a car ( hardly any place to return it on the Island). Stay at a Hotel where you can walk to attractions, restaurants, grocery etc. & has port shuttle. Check min. night stay as ship usually leaves on Sundays. Check www.galveston.com for tips, also has video cams all around the Island.

    Hi leen50!

Do you have a few suggestions for hotels that are the most walkable to restaurants and attractions? Thanks so much!!

  11. I will be on Radiance on May 18th as well! I'm so excited!! I've been planning this cruise for over a year now and I can't believe it is almost here.

We will be staying in Vancouver one night before the cruise and then plan on staying in Alaska until Tuesday after the cruise. We are going to head to Denali after we take the morning train from Seward to Anchorage.

Part of me wishes that we would have picked the southbound cruise because of the long journey home, but I'm just happy to be going to Alaska. If we like it, maybe we will try southbound next time.:D:D

I too will have the cruise compasses and menus, as well as anything else we receive and plan on posting them. I'm seriously thinking about doing a review for this cruise. I haven't done one yet on any of my other cruises, but always wanted to. There was so much information to gather for Alaska that it was kind of overwhelming. I have learned a lot on these boards and I would love to be able to share it with everyone and help other future Alaska cruisers.

I agree with the others. Please do a trip report. I know they represent a lot of time and work, but they are so awesome when finished. Have a fantastic time, too!

  12. I just drove throughout "Hotel Row". It appears as if, out of the three new hotels under construction, that the Staybridge Suites is the only one which might get into operation sometime this summer. The facade is only about 25% complete and it looks like they have recently started working on the interior. There is a huge amount of construction activity there though, but even with that, I can't see them opening before August. I notice that they aren't even taking reservations yet.

As far as the other two, Hyatt Place and Courtyard by Marriott, you can see where they will be located as ground has been broken, but no way before 2019. There are ten there open for business right now, if you count Marriott's SpringHill Suites (SpringHill is located on A Street and 36 Avenue [A Street merges with C Street at 40th Avenue] while the other nine are located directly south on C Street between Tudor Road [44th Avenue] and International Airport Road [52nd Avenue]. The new Staybridge Suites will be adjacent to SpringHill.

There is a large Outback Steakhouse directly across A Street from SpringHill Suites and a large Walmart directly north of Spring Hill as well as a large Century Theatre directly to the southeast of both of them.

Thank you for so much detailed info! It's very much appreciated.
