  1. I found this tour. It is inexpensive and quick. If you want to get off the ship for a little bit. If I don't do my own thing, I might do this one.

We booked this for our May 7th cruise. There seems to be a little confusion whether or not the tour brings us back to the cruise port at the end, but I suppose we can walk or take a taxi.

  2. I like that the Western stops at Costa Maya so I can go to Maya Chan. Nachi Cocum always good at Coz. Booked on the January 26, 2019 voyage.

Hi mac_tlc. We are booked for Feb., 2019 - Just wanted to let you know Maya Chan ( if you haven't already reserved) is already accepting reservations for that year. Because they only take approx. 60 people, it will fill up fast. We booked it about 2 weeks ago. Love Maya Chan!

  3. Hello all wise Alaska cruise specialists,

This just popped up in my excursion list for my cruise planner. It's for Explorer of the Seas - Juneau and is Royal Caribbean JUC9. I really cannot find any information on this - can anyone help - or provide any info?

Our cruise is the first week of September, so not sure about bear activity. And of course, weather can be a factor, too. Here is the description: $479 pp.

    Overview

Journey into the untouched Alaskan wilderness for an once-in-a-lifetime wildlife viewing expedition deep into the Tongass National Forest. Enjoy a breathtaking floatplane ride to and from Juneau and almost three hours of viewing Alaskan brown and black bears and other remarkable wildlife, including bald eagles, humpback whales, Sitka blacktail deer, seals and sea lions. After donning your wildlife viewing gear (provided) and participating in a safety briefing, your fully guided, small-group adventure begins with a breathtaking floatplane ride from Juneau. Marvel at the region’s natural splendor as you make your way to a remote stream in an area with the highest concentration of bears in the world. The landing location is chosen daily, based on the weather and the best chance for bear sightings. Upon arrival, your knowledgeable local guide will share the local history and insight into the wildlife and their natural habitat. You’ll also receive a briefing on bear safety. That way, you maintain your safety as you observe their movements in the wild, getting up close yet staying at a respectful distance. Then prepare to be amazed as you get a rare look into the world of one of the most majestic animals of the great Alaskan wilderness, the enormous brown bear. You’ll have almost three hours of viewing these and other noteworthy wildlife. And be sure to have your cameras and video recorders at hand, ready to capture the unexpected. Afterwards, it’s back to reality. After another exhilarating floatplane ride, this time heading back to Juneau, enjoy some free time to shop for mementos of your phenomenal Alaskan adventure. JUC9

  4. I booked for Feb. 23, 2019, but like a poster a few posts up, no confirmation e-mail. Though the deposit has already posted to my card!

Also, no way to add it to "My Cruises" planner on RCCL's page, as Symphony does not appear as a ship choice in the drop box. Same here on CC - no roll calls for Symphony yet. Not sure we will keep this, and I have not said a word to my husband about it yet!:halo:

  5. Hi All,

So, sister and I are sailing in less than two weeks from PC. It's a trip with lots of moving parts. We are renting a car at the airport in Baltimore, and leaving my car there. Then we drive to Florida. We are staying overnight at PCFriday, boarding the Magic on Saturday. We have platinum so check intime does not apply.....

1.We need to turn the car in on Mullet road in the port. Are shuttles to the ship running at say, 10 AM or should we plan on cabbing it? I'm assuming it's too far to walk comfortably.

    2. On return, we need to get to Hertz for our rental car, are there shuttles to rental car places waiting as we debark or again, do we need a cab?

    3. We are headed to the airport eventually but our flight isn't till 5:30 in the afternoon, so I'm thinking of surprising my sister with a trip to Discovery Cove, looks like it's only 15 minutes from the airport. So if we get to the car rental return by say, 2:45, and are in the airport by 3, is that sufficient time to get through everything and to our spot for takeoff?

Thanks for the help, sorry to be such a ninny about all this but I don't fly that often!

I would definitely be at the Orlando airport no later than 3 for a 5:30 flight - esp if returning a rental car. It's a very busy airport, and security lines can be long. Sounds like you have a lovely surprise planned at Discovery Cove. There are shuttles for all the major rental car companies to/from the cruise port, so you should not need a taxi. All of them are within a few miles of Port Canaveral. I probably wouldn't try to walk, especially with luggage.

  6. I can't thank you enough for sharing that information. We are trying to schedule one for June 2018 as our anniversary (30th) gift to ourselves to go Emerald. Our hopes are either to find a suite for January 2018 cruise at a good price or to get it for June.

Hey B&J_Pgh! Seems like Freedom was so long ago already, doesn't it? The southern itinerary is our favorite, and we love Adventure of the Seas! We have it booked for March, 2018. That being said, January is part of the high season for San Juan, PR. People from colder places try to escape the snow. As soon as you book your cruise, get your hotel(s) booked if you plan to stay pre/post cruise. They definitely can fill up.

    Happy Planning!

  7. My wife and I just returned from a fabulous cruise on the Explorer of the Seas. It was an 8 day Pacific Coastal cruise to Santa Barbara, California; San Francisco, California; Astoria, Oregon; and Victoria, British Columbia. I realize that this was a unique one off cruise and that the Explorer is now headed to Australia. So the Cruise Compass won't be particularly useful for future sailings. But I did scan them in case anyone is interested. You'll find the link below in my signature.

Thank you! I will be on the Alaska sailing from Seattle, as well, BUT the Pacific Coastal is on my wish list for the following year. Thank you for taking the time to do this.

  8. Yes, you can use it anywhere. Drink service in the MDR *can* be less than excellent, so you may want to get your drink elsewhere and take it in with you.

Considering the cost, you would be wasting your money using it to get non-alcoholic drinks.

The non-alcoholic drinks (like virgin pina colada) were $5 last week on Freedom. It would be better to just pay for them outright than to use the $79 drink card. The non alcoholic drinks and soda are also included in the Refreshment Package, as well as fancy coffees (except at real Starbucks kiosks) and fresh squeezed juices and bottled water. Do your math and see which would be the best choice. And, have fun!

  9. Actually, like most of Mitchener's stuff it is total fiction. /QUOTE]

Can you hear the sound of millions of bubbles bursting?

I am a librarian. His works are fiction and are shelved with fiction, but they are HISTORICAL fiction, which incorporates true facts with characters and some fiction. Go ahead and read Alaska by Michener - it's a HUGE book, so you'll need some time. Then, also read some non-fiction books/true facts and travel guides about Alaska. There are also several fiction mystery series set in Alaska.

  10. I don't know if it makes a difference for future cruises, but when I recently asked about aft balconies (and it had to be Explorer or Adventure I was calling about, though I cannot remember which...), the booking agent stated that there are aft balconies on three decks - two of the decks could only be booked for three or more people and one deck would allow booking for a party of two. I believe it was decks 7,8 and 9. They told me only deck 7 could be booked for 2 people. I ended up booking mid-ship anyway, but perhaps this is something RCCL is enforcing more and more often as the popularity of these locations increases.

OP, I am a former teacher, too, and I understand the limits of the schedule. Now my daughter is in college to be a teacher (against my advice :( ) and we will be stuck to that schedule again when we want to travel with her.

Thank you for doing what you do every day - and especially in the military community. I sincerely hope RCCL will at least find a way to compensate you for the changes they have made. Yes, I understand the contract and that they don't HAVE to, but I would hope they do.... and I agree, post to social media.

Best of luck to you, and whatever the outcome, I also hope you have a beautiful cruise.
