  1. Since your question has been answered I will join those that are suggesting booking a hotel on your own.

I agree on the price. We booked our own hotel in Rome a couple weeks ago and had the hotel arrange transportation from the ship. Even with transportation much less than Princess deal. Price of room included transportation to airport and one dinner at hotel. Hotel was amazing.

I used City Wonders for tours. Did early Sistine Chapel tour and walked in to an empty room. Pretty incredible. Used same company for Coleseum tour. Booked well before going to Rome.

Google is your friend on this one. Do some research on tours even if you are sticking with Princess arranged hotel.

  2. I spread my time around. I do plenty in my community as well. If everyone did just a little somewhere, the world would be a better place.

I am with you. I do lots in my community but believe a little help in other places is a good thing.

I have gone to California (as well as other places) to assist those that have been affected by wildfires or other disasters ( think Katrina). Without some of us willing to help outside our own community it would have taken a lot longer for those with basic needs to get assistance.

Everyone being different is what makes this an interesting world.

I think a Fathom cruise could be in my future. Things may be disorganized, may not be how I would do it but that really doesn't matter in the big scheme of things. We all have our own definition of organization and flexibility and how we choose to let it impact us. It is the end result that matters.

  3. I just spoke with Cust Svc rep from the company that manages the Regal and Royal Enclave. She confirmed directly that the BEDS ARE DESIGNED TO BE HEATED AND SUPPOSED TO BE HEATED and that if they are not it means that something is wrong.

She said that she has never had any complaint about the beds being unheated reach her ears before mine. She also said that internal inquiries have been sent to their operations department, and that she was eager to get to the bottom of the situation so it would be corrected.

Let's all pray that this actually results in the problem being corrected!

Sorry but when I pray it is not about heated beds in the Enclave. I think people obsessed with this need to get a grip on the level of impact it has on life.

  4. The only exception that I know of, and this usually applies to any insurance company, is that if you need coverage for a pre-existing condition, you need to purchase the insurance within a specified time, usually 7 - 14 days after making your initial deposit. Most companies have a similar restriction if you need to include "cancel for any reason". We like to use insuremytrip.com.

It really doesn't matter what "most companies" do when you purchase the policy that fits your needs. You only care about that the policy you purchase fits your needs. I really doubt anyone on here has done the research to support "most companies" statements.

This is also one of many Cruise Critic myths that are on this board and repeated multiple times.

I am with Geezercouple -- Because I really don't want to be stuck with an insurance payment (or trying to get the money back) if I cancel before final payment, I seldom purchase until final payment. I get pre-existing coverage and don't pay anymore than if I purchased a comparable policy that has the requirement to purchase within a few days of initial payment.

I use insuremytrip to compare policies but always purchase from the company -- sometimes it is a better price -- not often but sometimes. I don't find the need for an internet company in the middle of my transaction and if I have to file a claim I would like to be dealing directly with the company issuing the policy -- kinda like using a TA -- some do, some don't.

  5. As regular readers of cruise critic know, if three people call princess

and ask the same question, they will get at least four answers.

So, if someone at princess said so, it MUST be true.

And if three people ask on cruise critic they will get 5 different answers. So if someone on cruise critic said so it MUST be true.

  6. Just a caution: If your cruise is also sold in segments of 7/14 days, if you expect to use both of your allotments, sign up during the first week, even though you don't expect to use the second person's time until later. We booked a 14 day cruise to Alaska which was also sold as two 7's. I signed up and used my minutes, and when I signed my sister up for hers in the second week, she only got the amount for one week, 150 instead of 250. Because the cruise was only 7 days then. EM

If your cruise is also sold in segments and you booked as a 21 day cruise, make sure you get the minutes for the 21 days you booked. You should not have an allotment for each segment if you didn't book in segments. If you follow the logic in the above post you will be short 100 minutes as the minutes for a 7 day added to the minutes for a 14 day add up to 400, not 500 which you get for a 21 day cruise.

  7. I want to make sure I do it right, so not to lose any credit we get being in separate rooms.Have cruised many times but not been in this situation. We will have a nice amount of obc,if we have different cabins registered.

To do it "right" stay in the separate cabins you booked. The OBC was given because you are in two different cabins, not because you booked with every intention of gaming the system.

I don't care what you do but just don't understand the "do it right" comment.

  8. For all those that are so authoritative about TSA, Federal Laws, etc etc etc. -- do you ever go outside the U.S. and have "pills" in your pocket, purse or whatever when you get off the ship.

Try taking benedryl (or generic equivalent) into a country where it is a banned substance and explain it isn't banned / controlled in the U.S. and even better --the posters on Cruise Critic said don't worry. I have seen people trying to squirm out of this one -- didn't work.

I am always aware of the laws of the country I am going to -- the banned substance list and their expectations. I am not going to sit in a jail cell and say -- read the code on the pill and let me out or any of the other things I have read on here.

Each to their own but if / when I carry medication -- no matter how the U.S. classifies it -- to a foreign country I am going to be a bit careful.

  9. I book every cruise through my mileage program / credit card. I don't use miles for the cruise but that doesn't matter. They are extremely responsive and have more expertise than the cruise line representatives most the time. They have always been a great advocate for me when needed. Isn't that what you want with a TA?

I get a significant number of miles for booking through them in addition to OBC.

  10. To ask any questions you have about the program. On our last cruise, a b2b booked as one cruise, I visited to verify that I would get a second internet credit and that any minutes remaining at the end of the first leg would carry over.

In our case we had to work with the Captain's Circle host to change this practice of providing minutes per segment, as two segments gave us 100 less minutes than counting the trip as one cruise (which is what we booked).

Shogun -- Internet person would not fix it without authorization from Captain's Circle Host -- so that was the person we had to "go straight to". It was a pain but that was how it had to be done. Guess we could have gone to the Captain but figured this was a better option.

  11. It doesn't have to be a "card...you can fold a piece of paper and just leave it in the slot....all you need to do is break the beam that is controlling the lights....doesn't have to be a "card" at all! You could stick a dollar in there! Or, fold up one of those annoying flyers you'll get by the dozens in your cabin daily!

Or you could make it easy and use your S&S card. I don't really need the card when I am in the room and this way I always know where it is.

  12. Canada requires "Valid at time of entry", US the same so the answer to your question is -- you do not have to renew it. To confirm this information go to the State Department link and it is all well documented.

Do what you want with all the opinions offered.

  13. I print them in black and white and attach them with staples at the hotel the morning of embarkation. In 18 cruises have never had one come off yet.

Same here, black and white and hotel stapler -- never had a problem.

Kudos to whoever thought of the holders and managed to get the folks that spend the better part of their days posting on CC to declare them the best thing since sliced bread. Someone made a few bucks.

  14. I book the cruise with my rewards card, through the airline website and get tons of points. Haven't paid for a flight in years. The trip back from our TA this year is first class -- free. That saves lots of dollars.

I don't drink alcohol or soda, took advantage of the free gratuities, specialty restaurant sale quite some time ago so S&S balance will be next to nothing.

I tend to spend money on travel that has more adventure and unique things to do than cruising so it is easy for me to walk away from a cruise without spending much money other than the cruise fare.

  15. Everyone is different, every injury is different but to answer your question "Have you every cruised after a concussion" (which should not be substituted for your situation) ---

I flew and cruised within a couple months of a concussion / TBI / 4 brain bleeds last year. Neurologists (the specialists from the ICU and those that did my follow up) assured me flying was not an issue. The injury was March 27 and I was on a TA soon after.

Loud noises (not the dinning room but things like loud music) were not fun. Loud noises were going to happen at home too so I just dealt with it. I don't introduce OTC or prescription drug into my body unless truly necessary. For awhile headaches were a part of life. They got pretty bad at times but that was going to happen at home or on a cruise.

My biggest challenge for many months was balance -- I worked hard on this -- on the ship in the gym and at home.

We all recover in different ways -- I would never take advice from a people posting on an internet board as this was a very serious injury and all the "don't fly, don't drive long distances, etc." are opinions from people that don't know me, don't know the injury, don't have a clue. I also chose not to use Dr. Internet. I only took direction from the neurologists that knew my injury, my health history and my situation.

The great part of all this, by November of the same year, I was back on the ski slopes and able to be hitting the double black diamonds. It took a lot of work and great doctors.

  16. California paper (temporary) DL/ID clearly states that it is not a valid ID.

California is different than the other states.

Sorry to disappoint you but California is not different or unique -- same issue here. People were breaking in the DMV, taking the equipment to make fake licenses. All are now processed centrally and are not valid IDs until the picture one comes in the mail.

Wouldn't be surprised if there are other states that do it this way as well but I have no way of knowing.

  17. Afraid you're going to have to bite the bullet and buy at least a small internet package if being able to receive/send emails is crucial for you.

Other than finding internet cafes in ports you stop at, that's your only option.

If you must use wifi for access this is could be your only option but not everyone is limited to wifi for access so there are other options.

I used to set filters on my phone / iPad so I only received those emails that I wanted to see, blocked all the crazy downloads that are normally automatic and didn't need wifi -- didn't have huge bills either. In fact the bill was significantly lower than a package would have been.

No need for any of that now but a smart phone is just that -- a smart phone and when one knows how to use it the fear generated by the threads on CC can be ignored.
