  1. Special needs at Sea told me I couldn't rent a power chair because it's too hard to learn to use of you're not experienced. The price of a scooter seemed very high. I'm going to check around and see if there are other suppliers.

My friend rented one that was waiting in her cabin. It was nearly $300. for the week with insurance. I own my own. I would go to a medical supply store near you and see if you can rent from them. The place I bought mine rents them for $75 per week. She can also try it out in the store and parking lot. Its very easy to get on a plane etc. EVERYTHING is accessible now. I ride mine to the door of the plane. They stow it under the cabin. I'm last off the plane and my scooter is waiting right at the door for me. She may even decide to buy her own when she sees how reasonable they can be.

Not sure what cruise line you are on but some only deal with Special Needs at Sea. Check first.

  2. If it were me I would "self cancel". Having sailed once in 15 ft waves on a Carnival ship, there is NO WAY IN HELL you will get me on ANY cruise ship right after a hurricane. Up and down and side to side for days on end is no fun when you are trying to keep a meal down. That cruise was so bad even the crew was seasick. They had to close the casino because so many dealers were sick. Use some common sense.

  3. Usually the cruise lines will adjust the islands they visit. On GT the little rental cabanas at Margaritaville will probably be gone. They are small and it wouldn't take much to devestate that area of GT. It is a very flat isalnd so more than likely lots of devestation over the whole island. Same would be for HMC. The way it sounds now, I can't imagine any Caribbean port not being greatly affected.

  4. Is there validated parking there at the port?

NO at least none I have ever seen. We have parked there a few times. Port parking is expensive EXCEPT if you have some sort of mechanical device attached to your vehicle for a scooter or wheel chair, such as a lift. I have a lift for my scooter. Handicap parking is FREE if you have a lift device at every port and airport in Florida.

Parking is pretty expensive at the port. Last I saw it was about $15 per day. But it is VERY convenient. The garage is across a street from where you drop your luggage with the porters and you walk inside the building to check in the ship. Thats where you can get wheel chair assistance.

  5. Given the budget cuts, do they still even have mold-infested trailers?

Last summer on a trip to Florida we passed thousands and thousands of trailers parked in huge lots off the interstate. No definitive idea who actually owned them but it sure looked like government land from the signs we saw.

  6. It wouldn't make sense in context. All four cruise ships affected still have guests aboard, mostly those waiting to get back to Galveston themselves, where perhaps they've parked their cars. Once they make it back to Galveston, the cruise lines have subsequent cruises already booked. They provide jobs and revenue to the area, and so getting the cruises back to operational status will be a priority. When cruise ships were used for housing after Katrina, it ended up costing a lot more than available alternatives (such as housing people in other Texas cities). It's just economically unwise.

I would think most of those workers and employees may have lost their homes and every possession and loading peoples bags onto a cruise ship etc. may be the last thing they are thinking about. How are they supposed to get to the port? their cars are flooded. I'm sure the cruise company warehouses are flooded. And how can semis get to them to deliver goods? I think its going to be a few cruises before they can sail again. I'll be surprised if its sooner.

  7. My daughter had a kidney transplant last week, we are planning a "celebration" cruise on Celebrity in Aug 2018, we have been given the OK by doctors as long as she continues to do well.

They have suggested avoiding large , close crowds,

Is it possible to request skipping the large muster drill where so many people are jammed together and do it privately ?

You may (and probably can) avoid the muster crowd but what are you going to do about EVERYTHING ELSE on the ship. Dinner, shows, elevators, buffet lines, tours on crowded buses. You will have crowds everywhere. I think the muster is the least of your concerns.

  8. I bought a small stool to take on cruises. We always book a suite for extra room due to my scooter and non-handicap suites have a tub not a shower stall. The shower seats that Carnival has will NOT fit in a tub. My small stool is foldable down to less than 2 inches thick. It fits perfectly in my large suitcase. Mine has aluminum legs and a small triangular seat. Once I climb into the tub I bring the seat in and use the hand held shower head. It has worked perfectly for 3 cruises now. Good luck. A not so ideal solution would be to take showers in the gym. Inconvenient but maybe safer.

  9. I know this was an old post, but can anyone provide an update on if the Splendor has the American Table / American Feast menus? Thanks!

We were just on the Aug 13,2017 cruise and we had American Table. NOT HAPPY with selections. I always had a hard time deciding between dishes with the old menu. With this one I had a hard time finding something I like. Wasn't happy at all with the food this past cruise in any venue.

  10. I bought the social pkg 2 weeks ago. It took 2 days before it actually semi-worked. I could not post a thing or start a new post to fb but I could answer a post. It drove me crazy. I did not get a password. I just put phone in airplane mode and signed on thru the Carnval Hub which I have downloaded on my phone. I never did get my tablet to sync up with it. BTW you can only use one device at a time. On past cruises it worked like a charm. No idea what the problem was. A friend onboard bought the next higher pkg and she said it took her 1/2 hour to send a crucial e-mail.

  11. Know this is not new on the Splendor but questions.

Does anyone else feel uncomfortable having your sign and sail cards out in the general public? I just don't like this.

Anyone can just walk by and take whose card they choose. I know it may seem silly but it can happen.

If someone charges on my card I know Carnival can remove the charges but I don't want the hassle.

Can someone answer why they even went to this system? Does not make sense to me.

    Thank you

If it is any consolation ours on the Splendor 2 weeks ago were in a sealed envelope. So if your envelope has been opened or tampered with go to guest services and get new cards. Easy peasy.

  12. A friend wants to make her own pour-over coffee in her cabin. She found an electric kettle on Amazon for heating water and is asking if that would be okay. I've never had problem with security confiscating my low-end plastic hot pot, but I don't know if an electric kettle would make it through security in her checked bag.

Has anyone had any problems with an electric kettle on Carnival?

Tell her to order a pot of hot water from room service if she just can't live without brewing her own.

  13. I won't take passports off the ship. They stay in the safe. I'm talking about when we are in port.

I ALWAYS take my passport off the ship. Won't do me one bit of good in the safe when I have a heart attack (God forbid, or any serious condition) and need to be transported to a hospital and miss the ship sailing. Try flying back into the US or Canada without one........TAKE IT WITH YOU. A photo copy won't work.

  14. This is kind of embarrassing to ask but I'm a big girl (like over 300 pounds big) and I'm having some serious anxiety about the wall-mounted toilet in our stateroom. I've heard stories of larger people breaking them from the wall and I wanted to know if the ones on RCI Anthem of the Seas had any sort of weight limit? Anyone else my size or bigger have any experience with the wall-mounted toilets on Royal Caribbean that can put my fears to bed? I've tried to find the answer on my own including calling RCI for the answer and nothing. I'm sure I'm not the only one concerned about this. Help!!!

Believe me you will see your fair share of over 300lb. people on board. Do not worry. Public restrooms on ships are tiny. Try to use the handicap RR if possible or the one in your cabin. Experience speaking here.

  15. I wonder about flying with scooter? My dad is getting one that comes apart...will need a scooter on cruise. Will the airlines accommodate?

I ride mine right to the door of the plane. They take it down the stairs and stow it with luggage. I put a sign on the back of my seat and fold the back down so they see the sign. The sign says OWNER HAS KEY. PLEASE DISENGAGE THE YELLOW LEVER BEFORE PUSHING.. THANK YOU. There is absolutely no reason to take it apart.

I wait until everyone is off the plane then I get off when they have brought it back up. It is usually the last thing brought up. I've had no problems so far. EVERYONE with the airlines have been more than accomodating. I am one of the first ON the plane too.

BTW I bought a very heavy duty bike cable with a combo lock in case I need to park it somewhere off the ship while on an excursion etc. There is a place in the floor of mine to chain it to a tree or bench etc. Don't forget to take the key out when walking away from it. I bought a spiral/springy bracelet type key chain.

  16. We are booked on the Conquest October 14th, I checked on ports.cruisett.com to see how many other ships would be in each of the 4 ports we were stopping in. It looks like only Grand Turk will have a boat other than us in port. I have never been on a cruise that didn't have other boats in the ports, is the link I went to outdated and is there a better place to get this information? Or are we really going to get lucky and have islands to ourselves this trip?

Sometimes it works that way don't complain. It happened to us last week on the Splendor. Niiice!!

  17. We will be on the RC Allure next week....we have a scooter already rented but need advise on accessible places to go in the ports of San Juan, St Thomas? First time doing this and just a bit overwhelmed.

Depending on the power of the scooter you should be able to go almost anywhere. It's very hilly. Although the streets in Old San Juan are mostly cobblestone and very bumpy to ride on. Last time there I made it almost to San Cristobal fort but decided to sidetrack and go somewhere else. We did not go into downtown (shopping area) of St Thomas. I'm sure there were cabs or vans that would accommodate me but we'd been there so many times we decided against it. Both are US Territories so I'm sure that ADA rules apply there. The one time we used a cab/van for scooter transport was in Cozumel and we had to wait about 15 minutes for the vehicle that could accommodate us to arrive so be prepared to maybe wait a bit in any port.

  18. Take the scooter and make it easy on everyone especially you. Easy peasy from home to airport to hotel to ship. No one thinks twice about transporting scooters. Just tell them all ahead of time so vehicles are large enough. We just returned from a Carnival cruise on Saturday and everyone along every step of the way was most helpful AND considerate. I used to use a transport chair and my husband was miserable but would never say so. I also wanted the scooter so he had some freedom.

  19. That's the only difference I found. I'm wondering if it's worth it to spend the $70 just to not have our back packs for an hour or so.

If you are bringing a toddler I'm sure you are bringing a stroller, correct? Hang those back packs on the stroller.

  20. I hate ship/hotel pillows. They are not full sized. I always take my own. I'll leave some clothes at home before I leave my pillow at home. I sleep with a king size pillow and the ones on the ship are about half that size. Now the beds? They are fine.

  21. 1st time cruise. I'm disabled, and usually bring my scooter for vacations because I can't walk long distances. I am fine walking around the room, and since I'll be with a friend/caretaker I don't need an accessible bathroom or shower or anything along those lines.

We weren't able to get an accessible room, and honestly I don't need one and I'd feel guilty taking it from someone who did -- when I travel alone I DO need accessibility and it's so frustrating seeing able bodied people in an accessible room when I can't get one.

Anyway, my concern is the scooter. All I need to do is be able to bring it into the cabin overnight. I don't need to ride it in the cabin at all. Is that possible in a regular room? We're on the Carnival Ecstasy in an oceanview room. If need be, my travel companion can break down the scooter and carry it into the cabin, and lean the pieces upright in the closet. That's what we'll do if we have to. It would just be easier to fit it through the door.

I'm a tiny person and it's a small 3-wheel scooter -- 21" width. Does anyone know if I'l be able to wheel it in through the door and put it somewhere that won't be directly in our path from the bed to the bathroom? Or will we definitely need to break it down every time?

My scooter is 21" wide and barely squeeks thru the door. You need to jockey it in the hallway a little so you can have a straight run at the doorway. I had to take my arm rests off. I leave them at home. I doubt you will have room since you will probably have the beds separated. I have to get a suite to have enough room for it. I am mobile enough in the room that I don't need a HC cabin either. Be sure to ask for a shower seat from your cabin steward or pre-arrange it. On some of the older ships they can arrange 2 beds in an L shape. We had that once. That would be a great option. It actually frees up a lot of floor space. I think you would have enough room that way. Those beds are just on metal frames that they scoot around anyway. I just looked at some videos of outside cabins and it sure looks like the beds could be in an L.
