  1. I'd agree this was on the tour operator from what I've read but the group certainly has the know how to get this wide coverage.  It is everywhere.  Saw several places yesterday, today it was on a main news outlet, on MSN main page, it was even talked about on a syndicated radio show focused on comedy with a special song written (although the song was geared about being stuck in Mexico).  All the articles/coverage puts blame on NCL and none on people/operator.

You have never sailed out of Astoria, Oregon (across the Columbia River Bar-- one of the most dangerous places in the world). Bar (or Harbor) are among the most dangerous jobs in the world.

False.  We have.  I even reported here about our trip there with three ships.  Star, Jewel, and a Princess ship.  Star docked, rest tendered.  I mentioned how nicest local people at Port greeting us.  You even replied to the comment.

I don't suppose you have a source for this claim?  I'm pretty sure you don't and I doubt it's even remotely close to true.

If it were true, then that would mean 1 out of every 20 ship boardings would result in a death. Even if you meant to say 1/20th or 1%, that would still be 1 out of every 2000 boardings resulted in death.

I'd be surprised if anyone on these boards has ever heard of a pilot dying while boarding a ship they were a passenger on.  Probably 100s of thousands of pilot boardings - anyone ever hear of a pilot dying while boarding?

    Exactly.

The one article? There are tons. Just because you haven’t seen one of the 3 - 4 deaths a year doesn’t mean they didn’t happen. I think I first heard about the dangers while watching Below Deck, but a quick google works as well.

So now it is 3-4 a year out of how many pilot boardings?  That would be less than one in twenty.   I will concede I have no idea on facts but let's be real.

You do realize that a harbor pilot had a 1 in 20 percent of dying every time he boards a ship? Very highly paid job, but extremely dangerous.

You must have read same article I saw last week.  I don't believe it. Been on more than twenty cruises and watched many on and offs, some in big swells.  Dangerous, yes, but have not seen one fall.

The Gentlemen Hosts are still sailing on Silversea 😁

This is all the more reason that the passengers on this particular special cruise should have known that taking a private excursion on a less traveled island, with an operator who might be unfamiliar or unconcerned with the rules, was a riskier move than taking a private excursion in Nassau. The passengers knowingly took the risk. NCL and other cruise lines make it abundantly clear what happens in such circumstances...extenuating or not.

What do they call them??  Seagigilos?

This wasn't a normal run in the mill cruise. They were on the reposition world cruise, which is literally traveling to ports ncl has never been to.

This should have been an exception to the rule. It's not like they were in Nassau and could easily catch a flight. They are on a random island in West Africa.

Yes, they should follow the rules. But there are always extenuating circumstances.

    This should have been one.

    Welcome to CC.  Meow.

  8. Welcome to CC.  I was thinking more like 'Rochelle Rochelle' from Seinfeld.

OP, with an H6, what are you looking for?  You have the H3 and H2 as options.  H3 max four people.  We've stayed in H2 with kids and it was a great room.  H6 already a great room so I wouldn't be too concerned about bid as others probably sold out.

Eta just tried a mock and it showed one dos available so maybe hope.

  9. The whole fuel surcharge has been around since roughly 2010 when fuel went crazy high, lines started fees after booked, lawsuits happened, back peddled and language added to give option.

I don't recall seeing any posts about any fees though since but I also don't follow all lines.

I'm actually wondering this now as well. For the Iceland/Greenland cruise we booked on the Star, there is no haven, but we did book a DOS. Can we use that number as well?

For the Star in a DOS, yes.  Are you on 10 or 12?  They changed 10 to DOS so they could charge more vs 9 as both used to be OS.  12 got added around 2011 with two versions.  The outer ones have a wing to look over the side with a dining table.

That room also gets three bottles of booze, bottle of prosecco, unlimited in room water and soda.  No drinks delivered to room, for your convenience, of course.

Take the less cost room and add the Vibe Beach club.  The private area there on the Bliss this winter gave great views.  Several of us stood on the side of the hot tub when passing under the bridges.

We relaxed on the loungers, drink in hand, when going through the lake.

Although the canal crossing is great, it is still only 8 hours or so of a 16 day cruise.  The Vibe will be a great place to relax for the other 15 days as well.

Where is Vibe on Jade and where do tickets get sold?

Frankly, saw it once onboard the Prima last year and enough ... DW might "bring" her sister and niece to "watch" it next month with zero "buy-in"   Isn't this, a friend asked, sort of like the new Bingo in disguise onboard.  Well, I dunno what to tell ya ... no wonder they aren't pushing Bingo anymore.  Anyone else that cruise in those earlier NCL days, recalled "Gina" from the CD staff that would cheerfully announced it's "Bingo" time with her sweet voice.

Me, think, personally, feel free to do whatever, it is freestyle cruising afterall ... something for everyone to do, and not to - rather retreat to our private balcony with a beverage in hand (an ice cold coffee will do, overpriced latte isn't necessary) or alcohol-free beer will do ... or head for the gym to burn some calories off instead.  Maybe, better off go straight to the casino and make a donation, with the house edge/odds of winning big ... or, open that Kindle or iPad.  To each her/his own, I suppose.

First word of your post has to bring up FDR.  I'm not sure if he was involved in Wheel at Sea.

  13. We've stayed many times by EWR at Marriott properties.  I get it is NYC, but they are overpriced and I'd give them a C overall.

Our last stay the shuttle was a cluster.  Had to go to remote area at airport, asked driver of shuttle if go to x address, told yes, ended up opposite end of airport at different Marriott.

Uber on way out, first driver could not find hotel, second struggled.
