1. We sail the Star quite a bit, love her and LOVE sea days!

I go to the gym first thing in the morning, and then to the Spa. If you have a lot of sea days, the spa would be a great investment. It is a great place to relax, does not get crowded, two heated therapy pools and a lap pool. The dressing areas have sauna, steam, and the men's side has a cold and hot plunge!

There will be special meal offerings on sea days, usually. YMMV. We like the Indian brunch, the jazz brunch, the best of everything. It's hard to know what will be on what cruises, but check it out.

There are usually activities planned for the sea days, and you can read about them in the daily paper.

Be sure to join your Roll Call! If yours is kind of dead, jump in and suggest some sea day activities: cabin crawl, group meal, slot pull, gift exchange.

    Have a terrific cruise!

  2. It's a nice little gym. There are treadmills, bikes, recumbent bikes, elliptical machines, free weights and weight machines. The cardio machines have individual TV monitors, bring your own earbuds. There are towels, even a mini fridge with COLD towels!

    Have a great cruise.

  3. A family member is traveling next month on the Breakaway and asked if there are any vegan desserts - besides fruit :)

Wondering if any other traveling vegans can answer this for her.

    Thanks!

Some of the venues have sorbet. This should be vegan, just water, sugar and fruit.

And it's usually possible to ask for something from one restaurant to be brought to your table. Doesn't hurt to ask!

  4. If I am in a mini-suite and my friends are across the hall in an inside, can they not join me when I'm not allowed in Cagney's for breakfast and lunch? I hate to not include them in the mini-suite perks. Since I'm not allowed in Cagney's at all for breakfast or lunch, maybe the concierge would let them not join me, maybe just on embarkation day? I wanted to have them join me in the mini-suite so they could not enjoy the non-perks for the mini-suite, but they wanted their own bathroom. Anyone have experience with this?

  5. On that cruise, yes. They can cruise with a government issued photo ID and a birth certificate. It has to be a raised seal, holoseal, REAL birth certificate from the Department of Health, not the hospital record of live birth. The names have to match or you need documentation for the name change.

When my Mom didn't want to bother with a passport because she figured her driver's license and birth certificate (with maiden name!) would be enough.

I told her fine, but if there is a problem at the pier, we are all getting on the ship and she is getting in a cab back to the hotel :) She got the passport.

  6. We need to know the cruise to give you a proper answer. If closed loop, then they don't need a passport. Personally, I am in favor of always having a passport, needed or not!

There are other variables, too. Is everyone a US citizen? I'm sure other faithful CCers will chime in with more details.

  7. My question is in your opinion tipping is something somewhat obligated when staying in a room like that regardless of how you use their services or is tipping based on them going above and beyond just the norm like how we used them?

    Thanks for the input.

My opinion is that tipping butler and concierge is appropriate if you are in a suite. We always tip a minimum and then more for above and beyond. For example, we always tip in a buffet restaurant on land even though many people do not, since they are usually getting their own food.

We factor at least a minimum into the total cruise cost.

Of course, tipping is an individual thing! And, as we know, it varies from culture to culture.

  8. We have stayed in 12016 and it was great. My recommendation would be to stay forward of the elevators as the corridor to the pool area can be busy and somewhat noisy.

This is our favorite SJ as well. It's a quick walk to the stairs/elevator which leads to deck 13, the best "balcony!"

Also, you are forward of the turn the jogging track takes, so no pitter patter of jogging feet.

  9. I was chatting with a group of friends about tipping. One insisted that too large a tip is an insult. So I surveyed the group. Five of us, four had, at some time worked for tips. Guess which ones thought a large tip was just fine and guess who thought it would be an insult!

  10. It's always iffy when quoting embarkation times because they depend on the disembarkation of the previous cruise.

In a suite you will have a priority line for registration and a special waiting room. Most piers do not have a priority line for security.

We have usually arrived between 11 and 12 and been on the ship for lunch by 12:30. YMMV
