Cool Cruiser

Cool Cruiser (2/15)

  1. I’m taking my mother on a Avalon cruise that starts in Bucharest. She wants to do a few days in London pre cruise. I need to get to Bucharest so I have 3 choices of airports/airlines to fly direct. If anyone can give their opinions of which is preferred that would be great. We will be staying in London (I don’t have a hotel yet but it will be a Hilton brand as I’m using points). We plan on doing 2 day trips- one to Windsor and the other to Cotswold so will stay closer to those 2 points or closer to the most convenient transportation needs. My choices are: BA out of LHR (most expensive) Ryanair out of STN Wizzair out of LTN Thanks with any help
  2. Just for your information. On Avalon if it has "free air" and if you don't want the free air you get a $1250 credit. Transfers are included with the free air-you have to pay or make your own arrangements if you take the credit instead.
  3. I contacted a TA about some good pricing for Emerald a few weeks ago but to get those prices it’s a 100% payment. It gives me pause for full payment that far in advance.
  4. Has anyone booked any good deals during Uniworld's 12 days of Christmas promotions in previous years? Just wondering if it is worth the wait or if I find a good deal go ahead and book with another company. I'm not loyal to any cruise line. Thanks
  5. That’s probably the easiest way. It ended up working out better that we ended up staying overnight in Frankfurt. There’s are 2 Hilton’s in the terminal and I booked a room with points. Easy walk to gate for early morning flight and had an empty bus. So it ended all working out
  6. It was Grevenmacher. I asked why did they dock here. I was told it’s more shallow and they needed to do some work on the boat
  7. The cruise was really nice and would do it again!!! We had an early flight into Luxembourg on Sunday. The bus was nearly empty so not a problem with luggage but I wouldn’t want to be on it with luggage if full. Absolutely no place to put it unless you get the few seats around the handicap area. The bus driver wasn’t very nice or helpful and we had to put the luggage in our seats out of the way. I tried to find private transfers (since I was originally coming in the day before) but couldn’t find anything.
  8. Trip went well but a week before trip Avalon sent a email for new docking place which was about 10 km further down from where they usually dock. I was able to still use the bus (which was free) and there were 2 stops near to where the boat was. So I’m assuming where they usually dock there is a bus stop. And I ended up missing my connection In Frankfurt and ended up overnighting at the Frankfurt airport and short flight to Luxembourg the next morning. Easy to catch the bus at the airport with one change. Just use the Luxembourg bus app and it will tell you exactly where you need to get off/change. You can download your route and use it offline. Hope this helps
  9. Thanks-Cielbleu-it was hard to tell by Avalons docking location and the bus stop how far it is. Shouldn't be a problem getting my mother there. Notamemaid-I happened to post on another travel site with help in Luxembourg and a local gave me a link to that route planner-It is really really helpful. I have saved all of my bus routes that I need while there. And can use it offline so I hope my travels will go smoothly!!!
  10. It's a doable connection if all goes well-but can't rely on airlines anymore. I fly for work all the time and since covid restrictions are over it's been horrible-seems like I always have delayed connections and packed airports-so have resorted to direct flights and drive the rest of the way to my destination. So I'm just plan for the worst. Adding to the international aspect and the end destination is Luxembourg which doesn't have as much flexibility getting there
  11. I booked with points with United. I've looked at other hubs but I'm meeting my mother and niece and they live in a rural area and not much choice of flights (they are actually flying Southwest Airlines from lubbock to Austin to catch the flight to Europe). Unless I can get wifi at the train station in Luxembourg trying to use cell service-figured just catch a bus. I have asked here about transportation from the hotel in Luxembourg to remich here but didn't get any response. I posted same question on Tripadvisor-had a local say it would be $100 plus for a taxi (and hard to get private transfers)-so looked at the bus schedule to figure out how to get to the pier
  12. Hello, booked flights into Luxembourg via Frankfurt with United points almost a year ago (flight to frankfurt is on Lufthansa and flight to Luxembourg is on Air Dolomiti). Originally had a 4.5 hour layover in Frankfurt which was good-but somewhere along the way they changed it to a 65 minute connection-which I'm not good with. I have been reading about the Frankfurt airport and have flown out once from there (didn't connect). My mother is 79 and I can't just drag her and run to get to our flight. So I'm exploring my options. I called United and since it was changed I can have one free change. So I was told there aren't any flights from Frankfurt to Luxembourg on the same day (I looked there is-but 9 hour layover). But I can fly into Frankfurt landing on 9/2 and overnight and catch a flight on 9/3 to Luxembourg at 0655-arriving at 0735 (and the flight would actually be on Lufthansa CityLine. I would be getting on a Avalon River Cruise on 9/3. I always have flown in the day or days before a cruise-but the flight is within Europe and short. Tried to ask about checked luggage and the 22 hour connection-but the agent said since it's 10 hours they would keep it. Confused on that. Anyone know if we would pick up luggage and recheck in the morning or would Lufthansa hold it?? Second option is to fly to frankfurt and catch the train into Luxembourg from the Frankfurt airport. 4.5 train ride with a connection in Kloblanz. Than would have to take the bus to the hotel. Would also then bus from the hotel to Remich-where if we fly into Luxembourg on the day of the cruise then could just get Avalon to pick us up and take us to the boat. My first thought would be to overnight in frankfurt and take the plane to Luxembourg-but of all the cruising I have done I have never flown in the same day. That's my only hesitation-along with my bag not getting to Luxembourg with me and having no wiggle room to get it before leaving on the cruise. Any thoughts???
  13. Hello, trying to figure out getting to the Avalon Imagery II river cruise docking spot. I can get to the bus stop in Remich but having a hard time determining how far is the bus stop from where Avalon will be docked. I know docking can change but currently looking at Avalon web site and looking at that position it lists. Has anyone done a Avalon RC and walked from the Remich bus stop? I will have my 79 y/o mother with luggage so just want to make sure not walking a very long distance. Thanks for any help.
  14. Hello, looking to pre book transfer from hotel in Luxembourg to cruise port. Looking for any recommendations that anyone has a company they have used before. Thanks for any help.
  15. Hello, flying into Luxembourg and staying at the Hilton Double Tree (I know it's not central but it's free with my points and just going to sleep and get on a Avalon cruise the next day). So 2 questions: 1) There will be 3 of us and assuming it's easy to catch a taxi from the airport? I will have my 79 y/o mother and don't want to have to deal with her/luggage/bus so thought it was easiest to catch a taxi vs pre arranged transfers?? 2)Getting from the Double tree to the cruise port in Remich. My original thought was to book some type of tour and have them drop us off at the Avalon boat-but only thing I found was www.toursbylocals.com and it was really expensive. If anyone has done this please let me know. So if I can't do a tour then is it easy to get a taxi or does anyone have recommendations for a car service transfer. Thanks in advance.
