  1. Not smart.

    Totally stupid.

There's a big difference between "not smart" and "totally stupid". It's the latter that gets you tossed off a ship.

I guess it depends how "annoying" and in what way but in my book, the "annoying" could qualify as "totally stupid" too. There are some things that just require zero tolerance.

  2. I was happy to find Captain Mercer's blog. It was one I didn't know about. I have been following Jeff's blog, John and Diane's Blog and Treasures of the World blog. Any other's?

Esri is posting to this forum and to her "Go With Me".

We've got a couple months of great literature, eh?

  3. i had never sailed the Nieuw Amsterdam, and was excited to do so. we had a great time, but the bow was never open for some odd reason. does anyone have a pick of the ship bell that i can have? i have a pic of every ship bell from the bow of every ship i have sailed on. i hate to lose tradition here.

i would love it if you could share it with me..

    thanks

Can't help with this one as haven't been on NA but not getting on the bow would be disappointing. I tend to take pictures of both the bell and the stern running lantern(s) with scenery in the background. It just looks shippy.

  4. Ports seem to be the big problem. We been on a lot of HAL cruises where the general warning goes out at certain ports or where the virus was actually picked up in a port. Not sure what HAL can do about this, but it is a problem.

Last January one of the tour leaders on a HAL shorex told us their contract with HAL states they will not serve raw veggies to pax, therefore we got cooked veggies in place of the salad everyone who did not book with HAL got.

  5. I read in the HAL cruise documents, before my last cruise, that musical instruments were forbidden on HAL ships, unless you were working as an entertainer. You may want to check with the company before sailing, lest security tries to confiscate your instrument. You may find it very relaxing, but the cabin walls are very thin and the employees probably can't tell what's acoustic and what can be played silently.

Maybe I missed that but I didn't see it last I looked. On my last cruise there was a trombone player down the hall from me.

  6. Wow! I have cruised 24 times which is just a drop in the bucket for a lot of you, but only 2x was the room ready when we boarded. We usually board around noon. OP make a plan B!

If all your HAL cruises are in your signature I believe cabin direct started after you last cruised HAL. IIRC it was in the past couple years- before our 2010 cruise.

  7. I believe that they read as "No Sugar Added".

I believe you are correct. None added. Many of those items contain sugar(s) and still break down to carbohydrates.

I got into a chocolate something (cake like from a cupcake type pan) that was out of this world and my absolute favorite on my last cruise. It appeared 3 times on my last cruise. (And I made it disappear more than that ;) )

  8. Power strips with surge protectors are exactly what HAL does NOT want on their ships!! Surge protectors shunt surges to ground, which is fine on land, but on a ship they would be going into the ship structure where they do not belong, and can cause much damage to distribution panels, etc.

The Know Before You Go says on page 8:

If more outlet space is necessary, only Holland

America Line provided power bars are to be used. Please

contact the Front Office for more information.

Somehow I've missed this info about surge protecters being banned. How then does one protect expensive electronics while charging? Things such as iPads, laptops, etc. that have sealed or charge in place batteries?

  9. Just a thought as we know you're obviously a technophile ( :) )

If you are traveling with a tablet, you could take a picture of the menu and then pinch it larger. With the lighted screen it may be easier to see. ( then you have an image if you want it in the future too). Ive been known to do that in dark restaurants or when my reading glasses aren't working ( my eyes are "stuck" on a different focus).

  10. Adding one more thank you.

P.S. And Ruth, I have those pictures (and videos + pdf version of photo book just finished. I've been a "busy bee".) If you want them, please email me- i can give you a link for the videos or mail you a DVD with the whole shebang (no pressure- its okay if you don't). ;-) There is a picture of you that came out nicely now that the background is properly "exposed" in post production.

  11.

So basically the answer is that they are either getting ready to drop the price for that category making it available or they are getting ready to pull it either way most likely it will be a guarantee ONLY. Since there are very few cabins that are HH on any of the ships.

It seems a large percentage of the HHs are not in great locations, at least on the R and S classes (under the galley)

  12. I recently watched a very interesting news story about the infamous McDonald's coffee case that really changed my perspective. It is very much worth watching to get a more complete perspective on the case which in some way become the symbol of an era of abusive litigation. I highly recommend taking 12 minutes to watch it, it is thought provoking.

    .

Thanks for sharing- that was interesting. And well put together.

  13. I want to double check - I too want to book the Pinnacle Grill on non formal nights.

    Our schedule is:

    ITINERARY Alaska

    FriJun27Victoria, BC, Canada6:00pmMidnight

    SatJun28Seattle, WA7:00am

If you enjoy scenic cruising and the weather is good you may want to stay on deck after Glacier Bay for a few hours. The sail through north passage et al into the pacific is beautiful.

  14. I was thinking myself that my husband and I could leave the kids with the grandparents and sister's family at an 8 top. and we could have a "date" night. Maybe a table for 8 would work great! :)

You could always make that "date" a reservation in the Pinnacle Grill for the two of you. Book a lovely table for 2..... Romantic walk around the lower promenade deck later. Gee, it could even take all evening. ;-)

  15. I am sorry but new to HAL. Considering a future cruise on either the Nieuw Amsterdam or the Eurodam and would like to see you current list of balcony cabin reviews- ie. largest balconies, choice locations, etc. I can't seem to find the list that currently exists. Appreciate your help!

I'm not sure such a list exists and the previous website which was a labor of love with info & pix supplied by CC'rs has been taken down. This new site is being put together by a group of volunteers rchwmn, Sspunk & Kazu (forgive me if I misspelled names).

You might want to start a new thread with more specific questions as to what you are wanting in a cabin. It is likely you will get specific help.

And welcome to the HAL board.
