  1. Hi Rich, what size would you need for pictures?

    Rick

I'm wondering the same- size/pixel density. In the past I've sent in pix at full size (300dpi) which is way more than needed for the screen and leads to having to send (and track) multiple emails. (But it makes for "printable" pictures.)

Maybe it would be helpful if we came up with a list of suggested pix and info to make it easier for CCrs to gather the data as we all cruise.

Such as ( based on some posts so far)

Required: cabin number, month/year taken, basic photo of main cabin area

Suggested shots: bathroom, shower area, view out of window if there are obstructions,.....

Suggested info: noise(what and when)? Privacy on balcony? Size of cabin, size of balcony, accessibility and scooter parking,....

Would you want help with picture pre-production/prep? (Correcting color, pixel density?) I may be able to help.

  2. Thx for taking this project on. Would love to see something organized by ship and where the cabin pics are easy to find. I don't have a ton of time and I'm really impatient so if I have to look for something for more than a few minutes I give up.

One way/suggestion could be to have a section at the top of the page or at the section break that would list the cabins (in numeric order) that have pictures/comments. So when a new cabin is added (to the site) it's number gets added to this section. Example: (I have no idea how STDMs cabins are numbered)

S Class: (Top of page or section)

    Statendam

    (Cabins: 201; 270; 400; 601; 700)

    (Down the page)

Cabin 201. Pictures. Text/ comments sent in by CC member(s)

Cabin 270. Pictures. Text/comments sent in by CC

  3. You said you won't be doing deck plans but (if someone is eager and handy) wouldn't that be the neatest way to see cabin features. If you hoover your mouse over a cabin, the interactive plan could note the features of the room, let you click on photos for the room or advice the visitor if this room is similar to another that does have photos. Obviously this would require an expert to set up and significant amounts of time so I trust it's not on your to-do list (at the moment).

What you are describing sounds real cool but an WebApplication (with programming and a database behind it) and a very, VERY BIG project to create and maintain. :)

I understand the scope of this new site is provision of pictures and descriptions of cabins in a more "table like" layout you could scroll through. Sort of along the lines of what Joanie has up. And this is big project. Thank you Magnificent3 for taking it on.

  4. Sounds like the guy on my Australia cruise a few years back.

I was finishing my breakfast, sitting near the Lido coffee machines, when a guy who looked something like Octomom near the end of her pregnancy walked from the aft pool area to the coffee stand. He was wearing a speedo, and nothing else  There was one man who should have been wearing a robe.

And you just have to hope the elastic doesn't break....

  5. As I just posted in my review thread for my Noordam Christmas cruise, the daily menus had "suggested" wines listed at the bottom, some of which are not (to my knowledge) on any of the wine lists. The real standout was Stag's Leap Chardonnay for $39. I know that is certainly not on the regular dining-room menu, and I don't remember seeing it (and certainly did not see it at that price) on the Pinnacle list. Looks like maybe they're test-driving some new selections on the dinner menus first?

Maybe they are rethinking the markup. My local wine store (bevmo) had it for $23.99 discounted from $26.99

  6. Another thing to consider about SS (if price matters) is IF the price goes down you are fairly locked in to the fare unless you rebook at single occupancy or double occupancy. The SS rate is not published in a way you can easily check as the regular rates are. You have to call and inquire.

  7. I am newly widowed, I would like to do a 14 day European cruise and was wondering has anybody ever used Hollands service where they find u a cabin mate. I would looking at a vista suite. Any advice welcome.

I am sorry for your loss and admire you for stepping out and trying something new.

I did a Single Share last January for Antarctica. The cost was about 175%/180% for that particular trip (which had been sold out and was going for a premium price). The HAL Rep told me they would match me with another lady and would TRY to match age if possible. I don't remember if they asked about smoking(as it is no longer allowed in the cabin). Apparently the cost of the program depends on the cruise (as I looked into another sailing of the same trip that had been newly added and the delta between Single Occupancy and Single Share for that trip was a mere $80 or so for 21 days).

There were 2 options offered: K or better or some mid-balcony level or better (which was way beyond my budget). I ended up not getting matched. :) I also ended up in a C. After Final the price for an single occupancy cabin had dropped way below what I had paid so it was not likely anyone would have booked SS.

  8. Yeah, it's bad enough that the older I get, the faster the years go whizzing by. I don't need any help in hastening the process even more! :D :D :D

Gee, I was going to ask (tongue in cheek) if you were going to count:eek: the "extra" birthday- but 6!

I once worked with a lady who shared the same initials as someone in a sister office. Someone glanced at the schedule and noticed it was "cb's" birthday. We all scrambled to pull together a surprise party for her - and when we called her in it was us that was surprised. She teased us about making her an extra year older- and then we started putting candles on every cake that came in and singing to her. We had about 4 celebrations for her that year!

  9. I get a chuckle out of references to a "fixed income" hitting after retirement. I've been on a fixed income for the last many years.

As a public sector employee I maxed out in salary a long time ago. We don't get bonuses or commissions (nor should we). So it is a fixed income and budget.:)

And when I retire (5-10 years projected) it will be fixed still- but at a lower level. Hopefully debt will also be less or paid off then, too.

    :D

  10. First I know my body and I had nothing close to the flu and had no problems. I am not the only one who has broken quarantine I was on a TA and a gentleman I got to know wife went to the Medical Center because she had flu like symptoms. The doctor said oh you have to stay in your cabin for 48/24 he told me they got up and left without giving them any information about Cabin number and so fourth.

It is very simple get a flu shot and wash your hands frequently NO FLU.

Wow. Were it that simple. While you certainly know how your body is feeling it is entirely possible to be incubating and transmitting Flu virus to others PRIOR to the onset of symptoms. Flu vaccine is a good protective measure but not 100% protection. Being you're a gambling man At least you choose to take that step.

Here's a good link for more info on Flu (spread through airborne/oral/mucosal contact and commonly causing upper respiratory symptoms (etc))

    http://m.cdc.gov/en/HealthSafetyTopics/DiseasesConditions/SeasonalFlu/About/howFluSpreads

Noro-like viruses are spread via fecal-oral route and causes gastro symptoms. One can spread them prior to onset of symptoms during incubation.

    http://www.cdc.gov/norovirus/hcp/clinical-overview.html

Being you were in close contact with your sick wife you were at high risk and you put others (in the shipboard community) at risk. Perhaps signed confinement to quarters orders are in order.

  11. .

One of HAL's greatest treasures is the crew. They are very attentive to, sometimes almost protective of, solo lady cruisers.

    Kate

I had the same impression. My stewards always seemed to take a few more minutes to chat. And so did a few in the Lido. I did a solo last year and loved it. (Missed DH, who had started a new job and the trip didn't appeal to him).

I chose open seating and did Lido (which is DH and my preference) but did make myself go to the MDR on 2 formal nights. I tend to be shy so I ended up asking for a table alone ( in truth I really chickened out of the group table option). There were a lot of people who offered to snap a picture with my camera so I could get in (and that was real nice). Our rollcall was great.

Have a great trip! (You can do it!)

  12. In addition to what others have suggested, I limit the size of emails I will accept on a cruise.

I set up a separate email and only use that acct and am very choosey with whom I share it. For photos I use photoshop to decrease pixel density to 72dpi and set up the emails so they are in my outbox (outlook) prior to giving my machine Internet privileges. On my windows 8 machine I use a local account (not associated with my windows liveid) and turn off automatic updates.

  13. Bow should be open, as well as Deck 13 (Sky), Deck 11 (Obs/front of the Gym) and Deck 9 (Verandah; below the Bridge). - Enjoy the Canal!

Does Veendam have more forward public decks than Stdm? (They're sisters, no?) I thought I remembered at least a narrow deck on each level that was open- sure climbed them a lot.

I guess we've been fortunate as (so far) when we've cruised the forward decks are open and many times the bow for sail in or sail away.

  14. There is scenic cruising sailing the St. Lawrence River between Montreal and Quebec City and it is beautiful. You don't see shore to shore the whole ride but for a considerable distance.

How about the boston RT 7 day historic coasts? Is that pretty much off shore steaming or closer cruising?
